yeah and if some of these old people dont have any young chinese party loyalists to take care of them, then really it's a problem they should take up with the party rather than digging themselves deepeer in the hole. I guess this is why the CCP sees supplying weapons to Russia's military as an economic and financial opportunity to help stave off the demographic crisis which the CCP created decades ago. as if IP theft wasn't enough for them, now they want the west and the rest of the world to be come indebted to them in order to pay and work for the retirement of their senior age population. meanwhile they have the most billionaires out of any country in the world

I want to correct one thing in this report. At 3:21, that lady who speaks in Chinese said it is the most disrespectful to one's parents is having no children. This is completely wrong! The meaning of "不孝有三,无后为大" is that: "Not loving one's parents can come with many ways. The worst one is to not fulfill your responsibility." This is just the first part of the passage, and most people ignore the second part. The second part describes an example that Yu failed his responsibility because he did not inform his parents that he was married and started a family. The original passage never mentions about no children.

Unfortunately, the issues are both more complex and more common than presented. It's important to note that while China's one child policy was certainly a key factor in establishing the base of this problem, the current day drivers of this shift are drivers that have been seen before in Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and others:. - First and foremost, over the last 25 years women have made huge strides here through the education>employment>empowerment cycle, and as a result, are getting married and having kids later in life. - Second to that, the costs of urban life, as mentioned, is a big one. Buying a 3br flat in one of China's Tier one cities can run up to 3m USD, or 1.5-2m in a tier 2. Add a bedroom (and a car to that) for a second kid, and as mentioned, having another kid is not something that many are choosing to take on. - Add to that the burdens of caring for elderly, not mentioned, is not only a financial concern for many families, but for women this is an emotional one as they are often left to manage the care of her parents (and the parents of her husband). Finally, if you look at the data surrounding the most recent fall off, the role of China's COVID policy cannot go unmentioned. It was a MASSIVE headwind to any couple thinking about kids, and while we need to let the data come in, it's expected that experience will have a lasting impact in the coming years. Of course, everything I just mentioned is focused on URBAN families. Which is important to distinguish because if you travel through China, you will see that families with 2-3 kids are present outside of the major cities. Perhaps not at the rate needed to level out China's replacement rate, but in my recent travels, I am seeing more and more families with 2-3 kids in 3rd and 4th tier cities. So, yeah, giving families a few thousand RMB as an incentive is likely not going to go very far, but at this point I think it is very hard to see a path where material improvements can be made because the reasons underpinning the challenge are not rooted in government policy. Which only leaves us with. So now what? Do they keep building future-stranded infrastructure knowing that the population will draw down a further 30-50%?

Three things needed to have children. 1. Time 2. Money 3. Security China has ticked none of these boxes. China is fully able to raise their birth rate. Population decline isn't inevitable. It's whether the government is willing to accept the short term economic fallout. That's a lesson for the best of us.
@RichardBrubaker
@RichardBrubaker Жыл бұрын
@@J_X999 Raising the birth rate, and reversing population decline are two separate issues, and while there are a few examples where both have happened they are all in Nordic countries. In Asia, Japan, S Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore, have all reverse birth rate decline, but are all still well below the replacement rate. So, while it isn't inevitable, the chances of China, the probabilities are slim to none even with major intervention.

@@RichardBrubaker Raising the birth rate in tandem to old people dying off. That means going up. Easy Asian countries birth rates aren't going up. They've hit rock bottom and aren't budging. All I'm saying is long term population decline isn't inevitable, because anything could happen.
@RichardBrubaker
@RichardBrubaker Жыл бұрын
@@J_X999 Sorry, I am not sure how you come to that conclusion 1) Birth rates are lowest they have ever been in China, Singapore, Korea, etc, and in case of Singapore, Korea, Hong Kong, and Japan, they have thrown significant resources at the problem... to little effect. 2) Death rates in China. Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore etc are only going to continue going up as the populations of elderly are exploding. In Singapore, it's called the grey tsunami, in Shanghai, the percentage of 65 and 80 year olds are growing significantly. So, sure, perhaps they can stabilize (reverse) birth rates some (Europe was less than .5% gain), and ok, major medical breakthrough could extend average lifespan a year or two, but outside of that, there isn't much to suggest that this decline will be avoided. If you've got a model that has proven otherwise, please reference it. I'd be interested to see how a city/ country has make material progress to avert.

Except for Africa, the world's population is shrinking. In the next 10 years immigration patterns will begin to shift. The waves leaving Asia, Eastern Europe, and South America will slow. Africa will be the largest source of immigrants and labor to the world. 10 years from now NA and Europe might be competing harder than they are now for top immigration talent. This also depends on what India does. If India continues to be protectionist and not improve itself, it will continue to see massive brain drain as top talent leaves for wealthier countries. But if India becomes better at keeping it's talent at home, NA and Europe are in for some tough times. NA and Europe will have to address their own birthrates if immigration dries up. That will require some social engineering. I think Japan is a pioneer in this, and likely Japanese policies (reduced housing costs, child care, etc) will be adopted by NA and Europe.

@john doe..The birth rates in Europe and North America has been low for decades now and the numbers are increasing. Less and less people want to have babies because the cost of living is high and people in western nations are the epitome of individualiusm, consumerism and YOLO lifestyle. African nations are not all growing its some nations that are like Nigeria, Ethiopia, Niger, Congo DRC among others. People often use ''Africa'' as blanqet statement with out the nuances and multifacted aspects on the African continent. There is also a braindrain in Nigeria where alot of high educated and talented doctors and egineers are moving to places like the UK, Canada and US. Japan population decline has to do with their own societal physcology and development of being introvert anti-socials. Where many Japanese men are even afraid to approach women and women shy to even look at men but biologically want assertive men. Many men have go to go go bars to see young women in Anime clothing dance and act infantile or have relationship with androids. If that is not epitome of masculine degeneracy then i don't know.

@@onlineonlineaccount2368 Japan is it's own nut show for sure. However, the NEET and otaku culture has spread. First to China with "lie flat" and "let it rot", and then to NA with "men go their own way". There is societal engineering at play. In China and NA home ownership is so pricey that some men feel they will never be stable enough to own a home, get married and start a family. Here's some depressing stats. Married couples are the minority among NA adults (37.5% in Canada). 4/10 children are born to single mothers. In the black community, 76% of families are single parent (usually mother). Society is following Japan down the infertility rabbit hole. I blame cost of living. Homes are 10 - 20x median income and cost of living is eating up the largest share of wages since the Great Depression era. The middle class is the new poor.

The Chinese culture and society have undergone seismic shifts since the 1980s. Having children used to be something like a religious duty in the otherwise secular Chinese society. In the past, many women indeed risked and sacrificed a lot to have more than one child. But now, people born in the 90s and 00s increasingly choose not to have any children at all, and social media is flooded with posts and videos about the DINK lifestyle and how to confront bossy parents/older relatives/older coworkers who tell you that you must have children. Myself, my girlfriend, and her sister all want no children at all. For her mother, not having a child feels almost like the end of the world. In fact the againg population concerns should be even more serious in other countries because on average asians have better saving than many westerners therefore better prepared for old age. On gender equality, just spend a bit more time in China you will see capable females have much better chance to rise in modern corporate China than many many countries I have seen. South Korea and Japan, maybe, but I'm not sure how China's position is better than that of Europe and US. Europe and the US have higher fertility rates, migration to take the edge off, and are still _far_ richer in per capita terms than China. Chinese people save significantly more as a % of their disposable income, but Westerners have more income overall as well as national pension schemes and welfare states. And regardless, at a macro level you can't run an economy off household savings. Chinese households will have their savings invested predominantly in Chinese assets and companies - which means if the Chinese economy does poorly due to not enough workers, the savings of Chinese households will perform poorly as well.

Productivity increases occur regardless of the birth rate. A low birth rate will only lead to economic stagnation, which will discourage all types of investments needed to increase productivity (as in the case of Japan). It makes no sense to say that de-growth pressures can be compensated by increases in productivity because these are independent of the birth rate and are harmed by a lack of it.
@Ilusha77
@Ilusha77 Жыл бұрын
@@pelayocf4558 If productivity was increasing regardless of the birth rates, like you say, then the CCP wouldn't make the birth rates a big deal (since they are growing regardless). @@Ilusha77 This is not how the economy works, it is true that initially the fall in the birth rate causes a positive economic effect called demographic dividend as a result of a decrease in the proportion of the non-working population. These forgone expenditures can be used to invest and increase productivity. However, this effect lasts only a couple of decades and causes detrimental effects for the economy in the long run for the reasons I have already explained before.

@saiana Yes, interesting point, but it's not clear yet what the net effect of this will be. It could actually make things worse. In western economies there is a great fear that robotics and especially AI will drastically reduce both the number and type of jobs available. There are so many jobs which will, partially, or completely, be replaced by AI systems. This may increase the productivity and profitability of individual commercial entities, but overall, it will decimate the job market. Remember, we need a big working base of people to pay taxes, so that pensions can be paid, and health care provided to an aging population. Many people, if they have jobs, will be able to help support parents/grandparents directly. Remember also, that it's much easier to tax working individuals, than it is to tax highly profitable companies. These kind of very high profit, high-tech companies have been proven very difficult to tax fairly or properly. Just look, for example, at the way Apple has managed to avoid paying taxes in every single jurisdiction it operates in. It has an absolutely huge slush fund which is not taxable in *any* jurisdiction. It's just ridiculous. It's very difficult for me to see exactly how AI and robotics will actually make things better for the majority of the population. I may be wrong, but I think they will end up poorer, and find themselves living in an even more unequal society.

China's population has decreased due to the Chinese running to other countries like USA, Canada, India, Australia and New Zealand. There the crime is high, housing crisis exists, and drug problems. And the international media remain silent and focus on half of the decline in population. The population has increased significantly in these countries. In Canada, pregnant Chinese citizens come to give birth in Canada and get Canadian citizenship. No government officials do a thing about it. Lottery tickets are given in China to come to Canada.

Population decline is a complex issue that can be influenced by various factors. While calling back all of Chinese population of 60 million people at the overseas may help alleviate the population decline of China to some extent, it is uncertain whether it can fully resolve the issue in the long term. It's also a big problem for other countries, lottery is not only for these Chinese who run out of China and also for these country so no government will do anything about it. Why refuse the people who work hard, pay the tax and tension?

The sea level is rising, and it is rising faster. Most people live near the coast. I already live under sea level. People will die by drowning and many other things. Infrastructure is going to be damaged, that was hard to create and living is already getting expensive.. I am not saying we will go extinct because of climate change. But it is causing damage and deaths, and that will increase. You are right, the climate has been changing since the earth exists. Sometimes the sea level was dozens of meters higher or lower than it is now. Such changes mean all cities would have to relocate.
