Jay Slater went missing while on holiday on the island of Tenerife last week. The last known contact the 19-year-old had was during a short phone call to a friend, in which he said he had missed a bus trying to get back to his accommodation and so was attempting to walk instead - a journey that would take 11 hours.
Rescue teams including helicopters, rescue dogs and drones have entered the second week of the search, as his family and friends become desperate for answers. What could have happened to him?
On this episode, Niall Paterson learns more about Jay Slater’s story and what might have happened to him from our correspondent Shingi Mararike. Plus, Sue Sim, former chief constable of Northumbria Police, joins Niall to discuss the social media wildfire surrounding the case.

This is what i want to say to the people talking about Jays conviction. I have been attacked by more than one person with all kinds of weapons many times. But i would not wish what is happening with Jay now on any of my attackers and especially not their parents! The guy who Jay attacked would most likely have been in 'that life' as was i and these things happen. The people talking about the 'machete thing' have probably no clue about that life/world or they wouldn't be saying these things! Plus by spreading this kind of talk over the internet isnt hurting Jay, its hurting his poor mother and family! So please people, STOP. Spare some thought for the suffering family. I hope by some miracle he is found alive and well!

This is coming from a father who lost my sweet boy. Please people spare a thought for this mother and father who are frantically searching for their son! They are completely innocent and every second for them feels so painful, like they cant breathe and every single bad comment that they are forced to endure is an added weight around their necks or wounds to their hearts and souls. So please people have some empathy and compassion. SPARE THAT THOUGHT ❤

Sadly the most likely outcome here is that he was disorientated from lack of sleep having been up all night drinking and maybe fell down out in the middle of nowhere and serioulsy hurt himself. I very much doubt that he was kidnapped and certainly wouldn't believe that there was anything untoward going on with his friends. I suspect this is just a really unfortunate accident and I feel so sorry for his family and everyone close to him. I hope they find peace soon. This must be a complete nightmare for them. X

How would he know how far he was from his accommodation? The men drove in the dark, Jay could have been sleeping, passed out, or just have no sense of how long they were driving? Yes, google maps, but you’d need some sense of scale. He likely thought he could walk sooner than waiting 2 hours for the bus.

@@ktb9369 He was seen walking towards the park just 15 minutes before he called Lucy which is nowhere near enough time for him to become dehydrated, hurt and unaware of his surroundings. If he got in the park he could not have been very far from the entrance. Plenty time to ditch his phone, go back to the road and get picked up though.

Good question and what I understand from the timeline he didnt spend very long at their Air B&B before he was heading back to his resort. Also unless he sleeps through the day and stays awake at night he was up all night and very tired.

I think the air b&b guys are involved. How they were allowed to fly home is beyond me. I think they lured him there, threatened him for being reckless with drugs but ultimately told him he had a second chance but had to find his own way home. Taking his money knowing a spanish bus driver wouldn't be sympathetic to a wasted teen with no money and wouldn't let him on the bus. The "Luton 2 " knew he would never make it off the mountain alive. Its murder just not I the conventional way.

People need to be more aware of taking risks walking in uncertain terrains. Why choose to walk 2 hours with no provisions or working phone? There is a chance that he wandered off trail because he saw/found water and injured himself there. It's odd to me that he wandered off the main road in the first place onto dangerous terrain. I wonder if he used google maps before his phone died, which took him the shortest, not the safest route.
