Hey conure lovers!
The long awaited video on crimson bellied conures. I feel there isn't enough information out there about them so I thought I'd start by making a general video about their physical traits, personality and behaviour.
Don't forget, every parrot is an individual so you will see different behaviours in each parrot depending on so many things.
But the information presented in this video is not just from my experiences of Crimson bellies, but from many other owners experiences across various platforms.
Hope you find it useful and if you want more crimson content do let me know!

What you say is accurate they are so much mood changers, my crimson learned step up and some tricks, I didn’t cut her feathers, one moment she is so lovely she hugs and kiss and after she tries to bite your fingers.

After reading and watching videos abt how placid and lovely they were, I bought two babies (hand raised) and even finished off the hand feeding myself for a few wks. I really wished someone had made a video like this before I went through what I did. I ended up surrendering them to a bird re-homing place. I tried SO hard and was so upset. The biting was out of control and in the end to have them out, I had to be covered head to toe. I have scars on my neck and hands still. Once they started biting my face I really had no options left. I literally tried EVERYTHING to curb it as soon as the biting started. Nothing worked and it broke my heart to give them away to find new homes. Im a real animal lover and not inexperienced with birds. I just think some of these tropical parrots aren’t supposed to be pets. They’re far too intelligent and need so much stimulation, and the right *kind* of stimulation that I think is beyond captivity. I now have two cockatiels and they are really amazing companions and so underrated. I hope this video deters some ppl from CBC’s as they are extremely high needs birds and I’m sure sadly a lot end up rehomed or stuck in cages due to their biting.

I’m sorry to hear you had that experience! It honestly makes me face palm when I read the articles or see the videos saying that crimsons are placid and never bite. They are even marketed for newer parrot owners which is basically setting people up to fail. With some exceptions most owners mention this kind of behaviour! We experience it ourselves often and we have tons of experience with parrots. While both of ours are rescues or rehomes it’s only now I’m getting to have a fun relationship with one and still working on the other. Even then bites will still happen. You’re correct, I’d honest say that crimsons should not be pets or should only really be kept by experienced owners as they can be so challenging!

My girl CB has actually calmed down a lot since she laid her first lot of eggs earlier this year. However my boy who is 2 years younger than her will bully her and is a much more agitated bird. However he has finally got his beak biting strength under control and will warn me rather than hold onto my finger and grind (glad that’s in the past 👍🏽) I find I have to really watch their body language very carefully and when I don’t I get nailed or warned. Your video is really interesting cos the breeder told me that they are more mellow and quieter that green cheeks and cos I don’t have any other experience I believed that till now. Thanks so much for your videos and as a crimson parront I would love to see more crimson info

It’s good that she’s calmed down! It also seems like you’re doing well with them if they are settling down and you can read them that well! It unsettles me how much I hear that about them. It worries me that breeders are basically setting these birds up to go into the rescue system!

I have a 16 yr old CBC. He is exactly as you describe. I love him but he’s a huge challenge. When he’s out playing with me, I can’t really relax because he could quickly nip at me. His beak is quite strong. He likes to scream at times. Definitely not for beginners as you need to be firm with them. Their beauty is amazing!
@TheParrotTeacher

It really is true! The whole being firm thing is interesting too as we are noticing that! Not punishing them but making clear certain behaviours don’t get them what they want by redirection etc!! I get on pretty well with one of ours now Kipling thanks to lots of work but Charlie still regularly nips me!

I have 2 GCCs and a CBC. The CBC is relatively more curious and enjoys playing with toys by itself. The GCCs are more sociable and try to make friends with the CBC but the CBC in its younger days (up to 9 months) will shoo them off, currently (2 years old) the CBC just ignores them. The bite strength of the CBC is milder compared to the GCC as it was hand-fed by myself as a chick. My previous CBC (not hand-fed) can leave bite scars. Haven't experienced the mood swings of the CBCs much but I believe they don't always like to be told or instructed what to do, so I give it some space to be free-ranging. I tend to believe that the more assertive and confident the bird, the more intelligent they are.

I watched this video before getting a CBC and now I’m watching it again after having one for only 10 days. And everything you said is turning out to be so true for my crimson! My green cheek that I got back in September bonded with us on the same day we got him and learned to trust us so easily. He only lightly nips when something upsets him, loves attention, and is very cuddly and outgoing. Our new crimson on the other hand…she seems more reserved and moody, bites harder, and isn’t as social as our GCC. She has her sweet moments every now and then, but they are definitely on her terms not ours.

My crimson is exactly as you describe. He is adorable and cuddly one minute and then he gets over excited and can nip. He talks a lot too. It's interesting that you say they've got more time powerful beaks than other conures. And yes he loves to have long screeching sessions for no reason. I didn't know any of this when I adopted him 😂 He's adorable and I love him but I am very cautious about even thinking of introducing another bird into our home. I don't know if he'd really object.

Nothing like our green cheeks, very much his own species, with all the good and the bad that comes along with that 😊 do think it is important people know crimson bellies arent a colour variation of a green cheek. Thanks for the video great info! I've been researching Crimsons to possibly get one and this is the first I've heard of them having these mood swings. So far all I've heard is them being very even tempered, do you have any insight on why there may be such a difference in experiences? I'm curious because I have a pretty busy house, 3 medium sized dogs and 3 other people so I am hoping to find a parrot that could be a good fit for us. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
@TheParrotTeacher
@TheParrotTeacher Жыл бұрын
The issue I think comes from their personalities being misread from a few breeders who also only have them as babies before they reach adulthood. It’s also a few anecdotal accounts of their personalities being used by EVERYONE because they are a relatively new type of conure in the pet bird industry. They can be very cuddly and charming but almost everyone I know who has one (both rescue and bought) has experienced swings in mood or sudden bites! If you feel they are the right bird for you then do consider one, but just go in with your eyes wide open!
