Mathodze did not make the affidavit from the pulpit where all the congregants are to take what he says as the gospel truth. In terms of the law of evidence an affidavit is hearsay evidence unless the deponent appears in court to be cross examined. Further, he is a criminal trying to get himself out of trouble, so the "cautionary rule" applies as to all statements obtained in the process of plea bargaining.

Correct, but it's also naive or disingenuous to play it down as just lies to save himself. The information within the affidavit would have been verified before sentencing.

@@ShawnRademeyer an affidavit is not admitted as evidence until the deponent appears in court personally to be cross examined. That is the South African law of evidence. The job of the prosecution is to bring evidence to court, only the court can determine whether what is brought before it is evidence or not. Consider the old legal principle of audi altarem partem.
