Today's puzzle is a very special one - it's been created by no less than 14 of the world's great setters! All is explained in the video but this is a sudoku you won't want to miss. You can play it here:

Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. The grey circle is odd and the grey square is even. Digits along the blue line must be between the values at each end of that line. Digits along an arrow sum to the value in the associated circle. (The two-digit pill should be read as a two-digit number from left to right for these purposes.) Digits in a cage do not repeat; if a value is given for the cage, the digits sum to that value. Digits along a thermometer must increase from the bulb end. The orange cell is greater than the four digits orthogonally adjacent to it. Two cells separated by a black dot must have a 1:2 ratio. Digits along the marked brown diagonal may not repeat.

Me after watching the video for 35+ minutes being dumbfounded for most of it: “well that’s a 7” Simon, an actual intellectual a couple seconds later: “this has to be a 7.” Me: “I’m basically a genius for that.”

Think the only thing I got was that the orange square couldn't be 4 due to the 56 beside it, lol. That said, while I absolutely can not do most of this myself, I definitely see that it's an ingenious puzzle.

Have you considered creating a second channel called "Crypting the Cracked" where you discuss with the setters how they came to place the elements in the puzzle they set? Maybe worth a weekly or biweekly series.

You can deduce the “pill” can’t begin with a 1 right at the start! If it’s a 1, the minimum to make the 5 squares on the red arrow is already 20 (2,3,4,5,6).

Also the 9 in column 5 cannot go on the pill, the G or the even square, so it goes on the red arrow.

I feel like you can sense the multiple authors on this one, which is really nice - there's multiple things going on at times and it feels like you're attacking it from all sides. I know from the comments people are saying the Phistomefel ring isn't necessary to solve it, but I loved some of the ways that it came into play, it felt really elegant and unlike any previous Phistomefel ring solves I've seen. I can't help but feel like it was intended - maybe the 'OG' in the title is a hint at the interplay between the O of the ring and the G clue??

"There was originally a little-killer arrow with '45' on the diagonal, but that doesn't give us any additional information" Thoigh conceivably, if each person added a new clue, the 45-little-killer may have been specified _before_ the no-repeats-diagonal rule was added.

Brilliant puzzle! Loved figuring out all the implications of the clues, though having so many meant that sometimes I forgot about some of them. At 3:54, Simon, being a wizard, should already know that 5 and a half is not the only possible number that can go between 5 and 6. It could also be 5 and three-quarters.

For anyone interested, I found another (rather more approachable) way to get the pair of pencil-marked 1s in box nine. As there cannot be a 1 on the blue g line, box 1 and box 4 form a sort of 'x-wing' with the 1s, thus leaving the two end cells in column 3 the only place the 1s can go. Repeating this with box 7 and box 8 put the pencil marked 1s in box 9

It's not necessary to know Phistomefel's ring to solve the puzzle - the G rule does everything the ring would do.

I didn't look at how much the ring was used in the video. I only used the ring idea to place the 1 in r3c7 and the 8 in r4c7. I'm not sure how much harder it would have been to place those two without realising the 1 from box 1 and the 8 from box 3 had to be reflected somewhere in the ring.

What is the G rule? I"m just starting the video, if it was mentioned there. Edit: Oh, I'm assuming you mean the G-shaped "between" line. I didn't use anything fancy to solve this, but it was very, very finicky at the beginning to slowly rule out possibilities. A fun, if difficult (for me) puzzle.

@@steveunderwood3683 I didn't use the ring. I found that the logic without it was actually much cleaner. The ones constraint in the diagonal of box 1 plus the "no 1s on the blue line" gives you the 1s in column 3 r89. That puts 2346 in the 15 cage (importantly a 2) and also forces the 1s in row 7 into box 9. Recognizing there is a 2 in the 11 cage gets you 2s in r7 box 8 which gets you the 1 in r3c7 (that whole 27918 diagonal). You use the 8 in box 3 with the now "no 8 on the blue line" rule to put the 8s in r1 in box 2, and hence the 48 pair on the Kropki dot. The 8 in c3 has to go in box 7 creating a 18 pair, and hence also a 18 in r7 box 9. The whole puzzle then goes more-or-less non-phistomofel ring.

Spotted the position of the 8 in the Phistomefel ring about a minute before Simon - as soon as he'd placed the 8 in box 3, I realised the only place the 8 could go in the ring was in the one cell not on the G... so proud of myself!

In the States, OG stands for original gangster and is used similarly these days the way someone might say "You the real MVP!" or having a solid, earned reputation for something.....Simon and Mark are the OGs of sudoku!

As a relatively new follower who’s just stumbled upon this channel some months ago, I’ve been partially catching up with newer videos and partly catching up with older ones. And somehow I’ve never yet come along the phistomefel ring. Today is the first time I’ve seen it mentioned and explained and my god, I’m completely blown away by that logic. This is *a m a z i n g*! Amazing puzzle, love how all the clues kept coming into play with the orange square giving out the final answer. First one I did faster than Simon, probably because he likes to explain everything so everyone understands what's going on.

So this is a puzzle I actually had the time and will to finish on my own and I really liked it. I actually like when there's a lot of different rules and they nicely interact with each other. Hopefully they can do this kind of collaboration again some day!

Marvelous puzzle and a very nice solve as well. I had an idea watching the explanation of the 'Phistomefel Ring'. You should consider doing a separate video on that, then have a pop-up link to that, it would save you quite a lot of time in the long run, because it's explained quite often. Of course you could also do a pop-up one-click-fast-forward-to-time pointing to when the explanation is finished. Anyway, just a suggestion.

I love to watch these videos, Simon a true sudoku genius solver. Although he will walk over the easy stuff because he is too smart at times. He sees things that make my head hurt as he explains them, then he will miss a simple thing like a 2 in the sudoku which clears up a 23 pair in the same row. This is what makes watching them so enthralling; how human these guys are. Love the content; love both you guys. Keep up the super human work you do.

I’ve been obsessively watching this channel for about a week now, and this is the first phistomefel ring explanation I’ve come across. Aside from the fact I am absolutely blown away by the concept in general, I can’t wait to come across similar explanations in future videos, so I can skip them and feel like I at least have some sudoku knowledge, despite my near complete inability of solving them. This video was delightful, thank you to the fourteen genius setters that collaborated on creating this puzzle, and thank you, Simon, for letting us come along on the ride that this marvelous solve was!

I myself do appreciate that he gave the full explanation. I'm not exactly new to this channel, but I do not watch every single video either, thus it was the first time I ever heard of it. If there was just a link to a separate video, I most likely wouldn't watch, as I wouldn't just stop the solving in the middle, and continuing without understanding his reasoning would surely leave me lost, eventually losing interest. Now, on the flip side, I do not object to have a separate video on the Phistomefel's ring, maybe more detailed, not something coming from a puzzle but kind of an empty board where it could be demonstrated. And I'm sure the same could be said for other aspects/truths/rules/you-name-it about sudoku that I probably am not aware of.

I think this was a pretty unique application of the ring though. It fits that he explained it again. But I agree that a separate video explanation should be the case in others. Or he could give a less complex explanation and refer to a video with a more detailed description.

I spent the longest time reading that thermo as an arrow, and while I was able to make pretty good progress in that version of the puzzle, it inevitably wound up leading to contradictions later on. I restarted the puzzle 2 or 3 times to try and figure out what I did wrong, eventually having to resort to watching Simon's solve... and when he pointed out an 8 could not be on the *thermometer*, everything suddenly clicked, and I was able to solve things just fine after one more reset.

I'm absolutely amazed at how coherent this puzzle felt. I made a good bit of progress but couldn't get the red arrow (the "wiggle"?) without some help from the video. It's without a doubt the most distinctive puzzle I've ever worked on; nothing has ever felt at all like this one. Kudos!

Something I found interesting (maybe it's just a coincidence??) but the small corner boxes of the Phistomefel Ring (starting with the top left box and moving anti-clockwise) contain the digits in order that start on the top of the "G" working inwards. In other words - to make it more clear - the first 4 digits of the "G" starting at the top are the 4 digits in the top left corner box of the Phistomefel Ring. Then the next 4 digits along the "G" are the next 4 digits in the lower left corner box of the Phistomefel Ring, etc., etc. around the "G" and around to the other corners. I know this doesn't have to be the case for the Phistomefel Ring (that is, the digits have to be next to each other that are in the corner boxes) but I thought it was a clever touch to the puzzle - whether it was intended or not. Well done.

What an amzing puzzle. I really enjoyed how all the clues worked together. Especially as different people submitted clues, so just as they had to work together to make the puzzle, the clues worked together to make it solvable.

Did anyone realize that there are exactly 14 different "clues" in there in the sense that even the "circle is odd and square is even", the two black arrows which share the bulb with the 9 and the killer sudoku cages have to be from different setters? (i dont know how to phrase this better but i mean that even the circle and square were added by two different setters, same for the two black arrows. Until the end the possibility that the circle and square were not added by the same setter didn't even cross my mind)

Had much fun with this one on myself and I didn’t need the Phistomefel ring XD (i.e. ~23:22 Simon gets pencil-marked 1s into box 7 - well, they could have been pencilmarked there the moment he got the 1 on the purple arrow, because one can never go on the G regardless.) That is a neat solution tho :)) Thank you to all the constructors! - and Simon of course~

You could have limited the 1s without the knowledge of the Phistomefel property. The 1 in box 4 had to be in columns 1 or 2 as it can't be on the blue. So the only place for a 1 on column 3 was box 7

I've noticed this a few times, Simon gets so excited by seeing a ring around the outside of box 5 that he assumes it must be a Phistomefel trick and often makes more of a meal of it than if he had just used the _visible_ logic. I didn't even consider the Ring, but when you know that you can't place the 1 anywhere on the G (apart from maybe at one end) and that there must be a 1 on the purple arrow, the 1s are placeable just as easily by regular sudoku.

The Werefrog kept breaking it by putting an odd at the thermo start since that was a grey circle in the cell. Perhaps we need to ensure indicators not related used different colours?

I think a cleaner way to see the long arrow at around 36 minutes is that the column must add to 45. Take away the 2 and 7 already in the column, and we get that the remaining 7 cells, 5 of which must be on the arrow, add to 36. The maximum value of the pill is 28, and if we subtract 3 + 3, which is the minimum value of the cells on the arrow but not in column 5, we get that the 5 cells in column 5 and on the arrow can add to a maximum of 22. This is exactly achieved if we fill in the remaining 2 cells in the column with their maximum values of 6 and 8. It's a little less like bifurcation if you prefer, although Simon's deduction is equally valid. What a fun puzzle! I tried to determine the order the rules were added and simply couldn't place the G, arrows, and thermo.

Fun fact, Because the G takes up so many spaces of the ring you can solve it without using the ring, Since you can derive that column needs a 1 in one of those positions.

The first time I saw this video I thought it was bonkers and way too hard to follow with so many rules. Today, I tried to finally do it without remembering anything from the solve and I found it quite easy! I really think it's because watching this channel really improves my puzzle solving abilities.

What a beautiful puzzle, really enjoyed doing this. Cannot even begin to comprehend how it was created, but it puts me in mind of that Terminator movie when the intelligent machines banded together to take over the world. So I'm glad the setters are using their powers for Sudoku and not for evil :) 🤖

This took me forever. I was stuck for quite a while before realizing I had forgotten the thermometer, which disambiguated a single square, which turned out to be enough. I'm pleased that I could complete it, though! Doesn't always happen with these things. Edit: looks like I came to the realization and paused the video half a second before Simon filled in the digit I was stuck on. I'm really glad I noticed when I did, so I can still say that I solved it on my own.

This was a very nice puzzle indeed. I broke it once cause I forgot the orange cell can be a 9, but other than that it flowed very nicely. But I find the break-in without Phistomefel's ring much nicer. The logic used is very simple and neat, no need for any tricks there. Although the ring is sort of built into the puzzle with the blue G, so I was using the same principle even when I wasn't thinking about it that way. The way I went about it was that I looked at the two longest blue lines and realised that a) they would need to have all the possible numbers on the blue line and b) all the numbers that can't be on those blue lines would form quadruplets at the ends, which intersect in the bottom left box, terefore c) whatever is in the 15 cage must be on the blue line. and then I just found the 15 cage and knew 2 would be on the blue line, which disambiguated the G endings and the sums. it still wasn't easy though, with my mistake, which took some time to figure out and fix, I solved it in 3 hours. every digit still takes me a long time, I simply cannot scan quickly.

What was nice about this puzzle was that there are lots of different ways of attacking it. I spent a lot more time thinking about the options for the G and the impact of the kropki dot early on and did a lot of it in a different order. Took me a lot longer, but that's just par for the course 😁
