Okay, not indigenous, but I do know a little bit about... that word from other sources. The taboo is about using it casually, if its used in a context that is scholarly it is less frowned on. This is however not scholarly, and... yeah that needs to not really be a thing anymore, I made a similar mistake with a certain creature from Navajo lore in a fanfic (if you know you know), and regret it to this day, but couldn't cut it (the chapters were important for continuity), so I put an apology on those two chapters for it as it was the best I could do. Honestly, I blame the internet for this, Creepypastas in particular made those two things a bit too popular for the wrong reasons. If I got any of what I said wrong I apologize and will correct myself.

Huh, interesting. I'd never heard of this being an issue. I'm quite fond of Until Dawn so it's a shame to hear that it probably played a role in popularizing that, though I agree that Creepypastas probably had a bigger impact. Out of curiosity, do you know when this became more well-known as being problematic? I don't mean in the sense of "this was always an issue" but more of "this is when the public at large began to be told it's an issue."

If you like "complicated" relationships, then the anime "Shadow's House" might be a good watch. It's about a girl who wakes up and is told he has no memory of her past because she is an artificial "living doll". She is then paired with a "shadow"; a girl of similar age that appears to be made of literal shadows. The whole show is about the mystery of why are there shadow people, why or how did they create living dolls to serve them and what is the relationship between a doll and a shadow? I really enjoyed the strange dynamics and how you short of discover things with the main character.

idk if anyone mentioned it, but for the DUFF, I don't think they were meaning that Mae Whitman is fat. It was explained as a term that was used to designate who the less attractive or more approachable friend of the group was. Wes explained to B that it wasn't that she was ugly or fat just that her friends were hot in comparison and pointed out a girl that was labeled as super cute, but her friends were super hot. The movie ends with pretty much everyone calling themselves a DUFF, because it's more about how you see yourself doesn't always match what others see you as. It has a really great message and the author made a point in the book to never explain what B actually looked like in fleshed out detail so anyone can imagine themselves as her. (At least that's what she said, I zoned out for most of the book so I don't actually remember lol)

@@ReadswithRachelso, I really enjoyed this. Really, really liked everything about it, except for the main character. I was with her in the first half, I understand her obliviousness about certain things and her confusing relationship with her siblings. She was just so inconsistent with her thoughts and then her actions, I felt like she really had no idea what she was doing and what to do with the people trying to help her (Pyrrhus did what he did to help her, I won't spoil it for anyone, and she just acted like this big thing wasn't done for her, like Jesus, girl). And I really wish I could have thrown the book when she opened the door for her mother during the attack, but I was reading on my Kindle and couldn't. I will probably read the second one after I have time to forget how frustrated I am with Leda. Glad for the recommendation, even if I sound like I'm ranting about it. So, thanks.

There are great breakdowns and disappointed/ranting reviews that helped me get over my frustration with the direction of the series. IMO the books go so far off the rails it's hard to stomach. I stopped at 19 I'm pretty sure. I think if she leaned into Anita becoming a villain it would have made the change in direction more palatable for those of us who aren't interested in 1 woman + every hot "alpha" man storyline. 6:25 I just spent an hour trying to figure out WHICH TERM was so offensive it ruined Rachel's enjoyment of Apocalypse Nope. Ultimately I settled on 'wog.' The term began as an acronym for Worthy Oriental Gentlemen. Some how, it morphed into a slur for dark skinned Asians. Than it was adopted by Australians who use it as alternative to 'foreigner.' They needed an alternative because 'foreigner' implies that you don't belong; where as 'wog' is welcoming and folksy. The term became so popular that many foreigners continued to think of themselves as 'wog' even after they left Australia. It's a bit like when a weeaboo refer to themself as gaijin... But cringe for entirely different reasons. What does any of this have to do with the Anishinaabe? I have no idea. 'Wog' might not even be the correct slur.

Things like "Apocalypse Nope!!" always get a 0/n from me regardless of quality. Entirely because *there is no "pestilence".* Like... if you're gonna do the Horsemen... actually have the actual Horsemen. It's one of my ultimate pet peeves because of how ubiquitous the ignorance is. You want a good "could be an anime" "book" that has the Horsemen presented correctly: read "Chain Saw Man" by Tatsuki Fujimoto. As of writing this, Death hasn't shown up yet.... but the inevitability of her showing up and being a huge nerd/goober in some way is 100%. (And in case people don't know... the Horsemen are: *"Conquest",* "War", "Famine", and Death. Only Death is properly named as such though. They're a metaphor for a worldwide war.)
@arkkon2740
@arkkon2740 10 ай бұрын
Im surprised missing out on pestilence as one of the horse men is a thing. I genuinely thought Famine was left out more than pestilence given its so ambiguous with things like the black death Edit: Nvm thought this was a peeve about the lack of pestilence, not the inclusion Now i just want all 5, cause The Binding of Isaac did this thing where Conquest was included as this sort of forgotten sibling
@FaeQueenCory
@FaeQueenCory 10 ай бұрын
@@arkkon2740"Conquest" is the real one. The White Rider, first of the four. Given a bow and a crown to go conquering. "Pestilence" is the nonsense popculture one. The Horsemen are a symbolic rendering of a worldwide war and the consequences thereof. First you have the White Rider, representing a sovereign nation (👑) who reaches beyond their border and invades their neighbors (🏹). Then you have the Red Rider, who is simply the war that breaks out in response (🗡️). Then what follows the war proper is the Black Rider, who is told by God to only harm the necessities and leave the luxury goods (⚖️); as the consequence of the war is to ravage the land and the workers... but the rich never feel such problems. Finally, due to all that famine and killing in that war, you get 1/3 of the world to die ala the Pale Rider, Death (💀). There's no place for a "pestilence" as that is already the domain of the Black Rider, and cheapens the metaphor.
@jasminv8653
@jasminv8653 10 ай бұрын
@@FaeQueenCory yes and no - you're right that the riders aren't really named, but cutting corners pretty straight of you're then claiming to know the real ones. The English names, first of all, are just what english biblical translations have brought forth. In my Finnish translation the first rider is more closely called 'the victor', not conquest/conqueror. Secondly, the idea of the victor or conqueror as pestilence is not a new invention, rather a very popular and widely shared idea in European cultural history, because our apocalyptic moments in times of more or less fully christianized worldview were different sorts of plagues. (Not only the black plague, for example cholera epidemics and poxes too...) sudden illness is a very natural image to link to the herald of the end of times, because it does shake things up in a very concrete way.

Recently Read: The Witch's Heart, The Empress of Salt and Fortune My Favorite Books: Uprooted - heals my inner nature witch Spinning Silver - A Court of Mist and Fury but I liked it more because Eastern European myths + Jewish main character An Enchantment of Ravens - Cruel Prince vibes Sorcery of Thorns - if you loved A Deadly Education you'll love this The Naming - Lord of the Rings but every magician is a bard A Face Like Glass - I won't say much except there is cheese that can give you hallucinations and wine that can give or take away memory. The Ten Thousand Doors of January - The Subtle Knife but the main character is a person of color and the ending was more satisfying (the ending of His Dark Materials gutted me). Sandry's Book - middle-grade books about four outcast children learning about their magics and making friends. I love storm and plant magic, but this book also added metal forging magic and thread magic. Fellow knitters/spinners/weavers please read this because we are all thread mages and it's beautiful. Wild Magic - (shapeshifting!) More popular: Circe, The Priory of the Orange Tree, The City of Brass, Gideon the Ninth Less popular: Winner's Curse, Keturah and Lord Death, The Bridge Kingdom, Hart's Hope, Grave Mercy, Sharp North,
