Beijing is a wonderful city, and I actually previously lived there for 3 years, staying in the Hutongs next to 什刹海. It was whilst I lived in Beijing that I had the inspiration to create this channel. In two of my earlier videos I explore the history of two of Beijing's most famous landmarks, Zhengyangmen and Tianan'men (正阳门 和 天安门), through the examination of old photographs that I have collected of them - seeing that you are from Beijing, you might also find these videos interesting. Thanks also for sharing your feelings on seeing Chinese relics in museums outside China. I appreciate how you guys feel that way. We Vietnamese feel the same way regarding our Vietnamese national treasure currently in the Chinese Museum. Back in the 17th century, the Ming invaded Viet Nam, and sacked our capital. So much history of Vietnam, books, treasures, relics, etc of ours were taken from us. We have been trying to negotiate with the Chinese government ever since to get those historical relics back to Vietnam; but the Chinese government refused it. What comes around goes around I guess.

On the matter of English pronunciation though, 'Lieutenant' is pronounced 'Leff-tenant' in English (owing to the letter 'u' once having been the same as the letter 'v'). 'Loo-tenant' is the American pronunciation. Also, with the word 'the', only use the long version (sounding like 'thee') before a word beginning with a vowel as it grates on the ears of most English speakers when it is used before a consonant. Always use the short pronunciation of 'the' before a word beginning with a consonant.

What is sad is the ignorance of people such as this OP, who doesn't seem to understand that you can only view these items precisely because they were taken out of China. Indeed, these items were never the "property of China" (let alone "the Chinese people"), they were the possessions of a despotic ruler of China. They would have been destroyed -- particularly in the Cultural Revolution of the 1960s had they not been taken removed. They weren't "stolen", they were liberated. It makes no sense to talk about "returning" them unless somehow you think the Communist Party (who carried out the Cultural Revolution which destroyed so much of the Chinese cultural legacy) are the heirs of the imperial dynasties of China.

The great irony then being that their looting likely preserved far more artefacts than if they were left in situ, waiting to be destroyed by the Cultural Revolution.

That is a topic that deserves to be covered in depth. My channel focuses on Chinese history, so while I may not cover the Japanese looting in Southeast Asia, I will likely to an extensive documentary on their actions in China. I also intend to do a video on Manchuria one day, but I will wait until I have the opportunity to travel to some of the historical sites in the Dongbei region of China again.

In the Japanese occupation of Southeast Asia (in the Japanese War theatre of World War Two in East Asia), the Japanese Imperial Army under the direction of the Emperor Hirohito (but never tried by the victorious Allied War Military Justice Tribunal) and supervised by imperial prince in the field in the project codenamed "Golden Lily" looted all gold materials/Buddhist temple gold statutes in Burma and Thailand/jewellery in Southeast Asia and melted them down into gold bullions for transhipment to Japan via the Philippines (i.e. the General Yamashita's gold as the general was stationed in the Philippines during wartime).The sudden Japanese surrender due to the two atomic bombs stopped the shipment operations. The American authorities came to know about this gold and took a portion of it from the Japanese - all done in secrecy by the post-war American looters. It's interesting that the response of the British public at the time was mixed - although there were some who believed that it was an adequate response to the murder of the British hostages, there majority actually felt that it was barbaric and unnecessary, with many newspapers heavily criticising the action (and attempting to lay the blame on the French). By the way, I use the Blue Yeti microphone for my audio recording. I have used it for all my videos and have been very satisfied with the quality, and it is very easy to operate (literally plug it into your usb and set the gain and you are good to go). I just bought the standard pack, which didn't include accessories like a muffler, stand etc, but I don't think that they are necessary as the base Blue Yeti already produces audio with a high enough quality. The microphone is also reasonably priced compared to others on the market, so I highly recommend it.

Empress Dowager Cixi and her son Emperor Tongzhi would have wanted to rebuild the burnt Yuan Ming Yuan but it was too large, and too expensive to do so. Much later on and during the nominal reign of Emperor Guangxu, a much smaller scale and physically nearer to the Forbidden Palace in Beijing using a pre-existing lake site (one of a string of three lakes adjacent to the Forbidden Palace) was chosen for the "new summer place".

It's not just today that people feel ashamed by the destruction - British people in the 19th century were also appalled by the looting and burning of the Summer Palace. After the discovery of gunpowder making and use, the Chinese during the Sung Dynasty period did use gunpowder explosive effectively as bombs, rockets (that fly) and canon/guns. These weapons were documented in military drawings. It was the lack of knowledge that later the West would maintain the myth that Chinese only used the gunpowder (that they themselves discovered) for firecrackers.

This Lord of Elgin (James Bruce, the 8th Earl of Elgin) is the son of the Lord Elgin (Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl of Elgin) who is best known for stealing the Parthenon Marbles. It's confusing given that they have the same title and are both infamous for taking/destroying foreign historical artefacts - you could say that the two serve as a good example of the phrase "like father, like son"
