That French drain around the house was a MASSIVE LOAD OF WORK! Very, very well done you guys! I was quoted $10,000 to put a French drain around my old house, and to install new vapor barrier in the crawl space.

You have no idea how much I appreciate your attention to detail and your aim and fastidiousness to get things right (and all the understandable gruntings that go along with it ha) the first time or rectify things as soon as you learn how to do things better. I'm glad you have the "push" to do most of the work yourselves because it's just awful to contract work to someone else who mostly operate on minimally acceptable standards as opposed to highest. Sharing you vision, pain and anticipation of the finished product!

I've watched every one of your videos, and seeing this summary reminds me of a few important points. You did a lot of research and planning. You had the resources to purchase the equipment and materials you needed. You did a hellava lot of hard manual labor. You have realistic goals, and though there will always be improvement projects, you can make this your "forever home". Your video diary will be very useful for others who aspire to do the same.

So inspiring for a person like me , I lived in a village as a kid , enjoying traditional farming… lived my chunk of my life in Bombay … crazy city life ( never enjoyed the concrete jungle)… now moved for good to a big city like ATL but this city is different even though I live in middle of the city but it’s like I am still inside a village … finally planning to get into serious planting vegetables around my half acre property … thanks for the inspiration 🙏

I have a pretty small garden, that I have grown food on. The best advice I was given by an elderly gent was, always use the companion growing method as it reduces the amount of work you have to do. e.g. Grow corn with green beans or peas, as the corn provides upright growth space for the green beans/peas to grow up and they provide nitrogen for the corn at it's roots. Carrots should be grown with strong smelling plants as the scent of, for example garlic or marigolds, covers up the smell of the carrots, so the carrot fly are less likely to find the carrots to lay its eggs on. It's worked well for me.

How about some beets root port? 1 kg of beetroot, brushed and sliced, is boiled for two hours in 2 liters of water. Strain the spade, pour it into a clean container and add 2 kg of sugar 1 pkt raisins (250 g) 3 liters of water Stir so that the sugar dissolves. Let cool. Spread 5-6 slices of hard bread with 150g of normal fresh baking yeast. Place the slices on top of the liquid with the yeast facing down. Cover with gladpack or a lid and leave at room temperature for one month. Strain the liquid from leftover bread and raisins - avoid getting to the bottom sediment - and leave for another month with air holes in the plastic or the lid ajar this time. Pour into bottles - preferably with a strainer to avoid sediment. Done! The wine will be quite strong, not so sweet and fully comparable to finer port, but will definitely be even better after aging if you can hold on. Great as a gift with homemade labels. With yellow beets you of course get sherry …

As with anything, there are good quality plumbing fixtures and those that are not so good. With all the work you have put into your floor, it would definitely make sense to install something that you trust to do the job and that will last for years. This is where the old adage "You get what you pay for" comes in. Good luck with your project.

Great summary of your year. The house is looking amazing, and with the digging behind you, I don't think you're really looking at 10 years to complete it. Maybe another 2. You can really see how quickly it goes from rough to livable once you got to plastering the walls.

I live in Portugal Leiria, near Porto de Mós. If you guys looked houses in Central Portugal, you probably know of this area. I don't live in a particular old house, our parents house is from 1990's. I'm a huge fan and overall enthusiast of these particular houses from 40's until about 70's. My dream is to defenitely buy one and live in it. These videos give you a perspective of how much work renovating a house like this can be. I was delighted to watch this series of looking for houses, your reactions are funny because you're not really used to this architectural style, however, we both share the same interests. I wish you all the best of luck for your future projects and dreams.

So how much more muscle 💪 do you both have now? Considering what you started with it's a great improvement. I still chuckle over "doing, redoing, re-redoing" your tent. Reminded me of an old army surplus tent, 12' 4 m X 16' 5m I had to get up. Of course I had help, a dog sniffing at every corner, 2 adults who chased the dog and remaining children around. We got it up, no floor, then pegged it all around. Pheew, not going to try that again. I curious about what the "outer" buildings are going to be, if you finally managed to get paperwork through. Water management will definitely be a key in Portugal. Fun watching you both planning, redoing those plans and putting excellence ahead of accepting less. I’m a retired builder/general contractor USA admire your ambition equipment is important. You could’ve done that French drain in days with a bobcat small tractor rent or buy save you much time.

Hello there! I've been following your journey for quite some time now and I must admit that the way you create and edit the videos has improved greatly. I personally find Guy's voice very soothing and calming, I really like how he narrates throughout the video. Also, I want to point out how genuine and lovely it is every time Kylie laughs on the video, that laughter always gets me. You both seem to be very down-to-earth and natural people and it's something that makes me come back to watch your videos every time you upload a new one. Can't wait to see how far you progress this year, and how you overcome all the challenges that appear while rebuilding that beautiful house and land. I can only say how much admiration I have for your accomplishments, over the last year , you had me quite worried for a time when you disappeared, but my god how much you made up for it, I look forward to the coming year guys.

Yeah, you will definetly get this done, its crazy how much you did already. I am doing some work on my house that I bought, but its nowhere near as much as you have to do/have done. I also didnt realise just how much work even the smallest things take and, once you are done with one thing, you find 10 other things you really want to do in the house as well. If anyone is interested, moved in in July, but started work one month prior, thats what I already did: Removed carpets in living room, filled gaps in wood floor with planks where there once were walls and where some planks had rotted away, then sanded and oiled it all. Removed all the wallpapers and mould in my room (previous owner had a wardrobe along a whole outer wall). Painted my room and the living room, including the ceiling in the living room. Installed new skirting boards in the living room and my room. Installed lots of cable channels for LAN and additional circuits. Rewired the main breaker board to add RCDs to protect the whole house (Im an electrician). Installed extra lights in the bathroom and motion sensors with led tapes under the cupboards in the kitchen and walkway. Installed an acess door to the small attic space above my room and the bathroom, toilet and walkway after removing the insulation thats laying on the floor of the attic space (it was probably put there before a new insulated roof was installed on the whole house). Removing the gable wall in the attic space with an old single pane window and building a new insulated wall with a new 3 pane window. Installing a selfmade ventilation system with heat recovery in the attic space (thats why I did all the work in the attic), that for now only ventilates my room, the toilet, the bathroom and the walkway. Insulating the wall thats seperating the garage and the house on the garage side with the insulation from the attic. What have planned for the near future: Insulating the wall facing the garage above the roof of the garage. Extending the ventilation system to the whole house. What I have planned for the far future: Insulating the whole house facade. Removing the floor in my room and installing underfloor heating and insulation. Maybe installing a heat pump. Installing photovoltaic and battery storage.
