With everyone freaking out about the pandemic, there seems to be a run on toilet paper. People are freaking out about not being able to wipe their behinds! Why is this? I don't understand! Anyways, here is what we used to use before toilet paper was invented. We travel into the toilet histories of Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, and then we head off to Asia and the United States. There are definitely some surprises on the way so stay tuned!
And remember- wash your hands, everyone!

My mother, who was born and raised in Italy in the 20s-40s said Italians would use Rose Water as a toner and then olive oil as their moisturizer. I did this through my teens and 20s and it does work wonders.

Interesting video. Yeah thanks for the super detailed use and effect of corn cobs. 😂 I was in such a better place for this pandemic, having installed one of the Brondell bidet toilet seats a couple of years ago. While others walked around in fear of dirty butt syndrome for lack of toilet paper, I sat in comfort while my butt was cleaned with warm water, and all in hands-free comfort! And air dried with warm air after the cleaning!

I use rose water in the rinse cycle of my laundry. Other scents can be used here as well. Dilute it with water as you wouldn't need to use it full strength. We don't use conventional laundering methods but instead use baking soda, borax, and vinegar.

Very enlightening and I did enjoy your humour. I stayed in a retreat with a bunch of people from North African countries and Arabs. There was plenty of TP but they would fill an old coffee jar with water and take it into the toilet with them. They were using water and their hand. They would wash their hands thoroughly afterwards. I learned very quickly that if someone offered you their left hand that they were disrespecting you. There were many other native Scots at the retreat and I told them what they did. One day a guy opened the door to the toilet and there was an Ethiopian guy (might have been Eritrean) and he was squatting on the toilet and defecating. That’s how we learned that they squatted. I have to be honest my western sensibilities were disgusted.

I do not recommend corn cobs (not fun). As for Sears Catalog, late in the season was not fun after all the normal paper was gone and only the shiney pages were left and they did not work well (and thus why some corn cobs could be found in outhouses. If stuck in the woods leaves can work, but the old Hunter Safety booklets worked well if you wet it with snow to make it less rigid. For if you forgot to grab an end roll before you left for the day ;) Some of us remember outhouses, now called "pit toilets" or such.

I wanna ask you guys. before you run out of TP, i mean like before covid, Do you guys usually use just TP only to clean your butt after pooping without any water huh? I can't imagine if i just have TP without any water at all... For me they both must be needed. i mean WATER and TOILET PAPER. and what if I run out of TP also i have long nails too, so i'll use dry or wet tissue instead...Even my toilet has handheld bidet sprayer, it is very helpful and make it easier...

You missed one. In the Age of Sail, ships would have a pair of literal shit-holes on the prow of the boat with a length of rope hanging down into the water. Do your business, use the frayed end of the rope to wipe, then drop the rope back into the water for a good clean until the next person comes along. To me, it sounds like the most hygienic method used before the advent of toilet paper.

Another great video! :D There's only one thing though and it's about the ostraka part, I did remember something from my high school year but I had to check wikipedia for more detail (I'll leave to you to decide if it's reliable or not as I'm definetely am no expert). As far as I know the ostrakon (if I remember right ostraka is plural in ancient greek but it's been 19 years since I studied it last) was the piece of pottery were they wrote the name of the people they wanted to ostracize, ostracism was the banishment of people through voting, and those ostraka were essentially the corrispective of modern voting papers. I never heard of its use as toilet paper, though it's also true that usually the history books we use in school don't really go in such details... Beside that, I don't know in what part of the world you are now (I really really really hope you're neither in UK or the US, and that's coming from a completely locked down Italy) but please be careful during this damn pandemic! :)
@DigItWithRaven
@DigItWithRaven 4 жыл бұрын
Very true about the Ostraca! That is definitely what they were used for, but broken pottery can have use for many different things. I think the toilet paper thing was because they were smooth, readily available and good at scraping haha I'm in The Netherlands right now so it's heading the way if Italy soon I believe. Stay healthy and safe!!

We Indians, including me, don’t use toilet papers now, rather simply water (jet spray for me, lol). My dad didn’t see a bathroom till he was 20 and he used his hand and water. Although using just water is not recommended. He used to wash his hands with "chai" (plant ashes) after doing no.2 🤣🤣🤣. Most Indians view the concept of cleaning poop with paper and not washing your butt as disgusting. 🤣🤣

The question sounds stupid, but... did they ever find traces of crap on rubbish in those junk pits? (Like Romans and Greeks had a pit full of pottery next to most mayor cities if I remember correctly) Or maybe some records of something for toiletry purposes being every day gear (In the medieval ages such was usually carried by the owner and only discarded rather rarely). I just don't want to believe people would use something that ends up leaving them... itchy.

To switch from Archeology to sociology, let us look at a more recent toilet paper story. In the mid 1980's Johnny Carson told a joke on The Tonight Show that implied there was a toilet paper shortage. Despite the fact that it was a joke, this led to people going out the next day and buying toilet paper - causing - you guessed it - a REAL toilet paper shortage, and three days after the joke, he went on the air to apologize for causing the great toilet paper shortage. This speaks to the fragility of the toilet paper supply chain, but also to the power of the media, and to the suggestability of the human mind.

I don't like toilet paper. Had problems with haemorrhoids. Doctor told me to not use toilet paper and sit no more than 5 minutes witch also removes the smell after. I use shower that comes out of the sink and is right next to the toilet and I use a glove with water. 3 swipes with water and I am clean, 3 more to be 100% sure and little bit of paper to soak the water but leave the middle area moist. I did use in the past one full roll of toilet paper and I could not get myself clean. Now I do not have problems with coloured underwear and smelly pants and I feel great right after I went to the toilet.

So cultures of middle East, south asia and South east Asia has been using water and hand method for eternity. And it is more hygienic than TP. U just mention it for less than 20 second. And infact recommended TP . 😱. Considering after so much research on history of poop cleaning and still recommending TP shows you have yet to understand your own research. Considering water method is preferred by 2/3 of humanity now. In my view , best is toilet jet/bum gun/ health faucet/ bidet gun (Whatever you call it.) which now entire asia and Africa upgraded to . Infact there is bbc reel video named " why west use toilet paper instead of water". Watch it . It has best quote of one Narayan singh
