Flat dies are good for everything. The bigger the better. My recent experience with a tire hammer was really positive. My only criticism was the little dies made it a bit tricky for tooling.

well done sir. I just attended a build in VA and am fixing to slap some paint on it and was contemplating the die question. It sounds like the tooling class you attended was worth the money and effort

G'day mate. I have only recently discovered your channel. I remember seeing you on FIF. However it wasn't until i started listening to the forgecast i have started following you. I have recently finished my own tire hammer build. Thanks for the info on the combination dies, i will be making a set for my hammer as changing dies over can be a pain. Also the saddle dies are a great idea. Thanks. Keith, Australia.

Hey Chris, glad it helped. I need to re-do this video now that my power hammer arrangement has changed a bit. I still feel the same about the topic but I have some new thoughts on it.

Is there room on a tire hammer for the die saddle? Looks like it doesn’t have the throw that the Anyang does

I also like flat dies on my self contained hammer in still waiting on my drawing dies that I bought when I purchased my hammer. I have one quick question. How do you keep your hammers so clean? And one more question. Where did you get your 33 lb self contained?
@derekmelton

Benona Blacksmith Jeremy Blohm I got this hammer from a friend who imports them. I clean my hammers after each big forging session. Doesn’t take much time, I just use a brush to knock off the scale around the dies and then wipe them down.

Thanks for the video, I'm about to make the leap into the world of owning a power hammer, I'm looking at either getting the 33lb Anyang or a Clay Spencer style tire hammer. Since you have both any advice on what one to get (pros / cons) besides the price. Thanks
@derekmelton

mason woodley Well, I do love both of these hammers. They both have their strengths and weaknesses but if I was going to have to choose one, I’d probably keep the 65lb tire hammer. It’s half the cost, can forge larger material, is easy to maintain and repair with off the shelf parts if necessary and it’s very controllable.

@@derekmelton Thanks for the advice, now I just need to find someone who is making them for sale, I don't trust my welding skills to have something swinging at my face height lol. Any suggestions on where to look for someone who is making them

@@masonwoodley9005 Check with Curtis Herrmann in Oklahoma or Raymond Head in Alabama, or Dave Custer all on facebook and all make great hammers. I'll be making another tire hammer in late February, we are having a tire hammer build class down in Louisiana, but the class is full. I'll be making a video of the event.

@@derekmelton Thanks again, wish I could go to a building class but all I've seen are to far away from where I live, I probably won't be looking to pull the trigger on buying one till spring (cause I still need to butter the wife up a bit) but I will look them up. Guess I'm gonna need to break down and get a Facebook hate to do it since I've made it 40 years w/o one... Lol
