What do bluebirds eat? To find out, we placed cameras at 40 bluebird nest boxes in Delaware to record the birds bringing prey back to their nestlings. The prey were identified from the video to determine which arthropod groups are most important in the bluebirds’ diet.
Caterpillars were identified as the dominant prey group, followed by orthopterans and spiders. Improving our understanding of bluebird diet is vital for conservation efforts.
This research was conducted by Ashley Kennedy in Doug Tallamy’s Lab at the University of Delaware. The video was produced with Justin Bredlau at Virginia Commonwealth University and narrated by Jessica Bray. Visit www.whatdobirdseat.com to learn more about this project.

Thank you for posting...awesome video...last year I had tree swallows in my bird houses and they would dive bomb my kids out in the yard ...it was kinda annoying....I was gonna take them down this year but I Decided not to and I’m glad I didn’t , as of right now I have two families of bluebirds staying in my bird houses and I could not be any happier

The lyrics “gone away is the bluebird, here to stay is a new bird” aren’t all that accurate. I’m feeding a regular gathering of bluebirds in mid February and this helps.

The House Sparrow (not in this video) is a non-native bird. It actively kills both Bluebirds and tree Swallows (both native to North America).

Female and male house sparrows House Sparrows (HOSP's) are an overly aggressive, alien species of bird that prefers similar habitats and nesting locations as bluebirds. The male sparrow is particularly nasty and will kill not just the young bluebirds but even the adults and eggs too.
