In this video we are back at it once again talking to COMIC BOOK DEALERS this time at WONDERCON 2023. I always enjoy putting these types of videos together because I think its always great hearing from all these experts and getting their thoughts on what is going on in the current comic book collecting market. This time I hit them with a very straight forward question "What are people buying these days?" With so many changes going on in the pop culture landscape and economic market its interesting to hear about the stuff that is trending on the comic con floor.
Hope you guys enjoy the video!

The Valiant comic book era was a great fun time to be a reader. The cohesive universe was well thought out and their characters were both cool older characters and original concepts that were a joy to read every month. One of the best thing in comics in the 1990's.

The guy in the red shirt from Elveen's Comics is a psycho; I encountered him at a smaller con in Costa Mesa, California. He had all his wall books displayed on racks--like in this video--all WITHOUT prices displayed. Customers were allowed to walk all the way up to the books; there were no barriers or signs posted ANYWHERE that said not to touch the books; only a single piece of string was in between the book and myself. I looked over to get someone's attention but everyone was occupied with other customers; I took the book off the shelf to look at the backside--where the price was located. I no less than 3 seconds does this maniac come barreling over--screaming (and I'm not exaggerating--screaming) over the natural sound of the con "HEEEY! DONT TOUCH THAT!!" Shocked, I look over and wonder who's been killed or what emergency must be happening; he gets within a foot from my face and repeatedly says--in a rapid succession "DONT TO TOUCH THE BOOKS, DONT TOUCH THE BOOKS, DONT TOUCH THE BOOKS!!--like this psycho is in a trance or something; I seriously thought this guy was going to have a seizure or heart-attack. Everyone at the booth stops flipping through the boxes and is watching this nut-job go off; I tell him--in a calm but stern voice--I was looking for a price; he responds "I AM VERY UNCOMFORTABLE, I AM VERY UNCOMFRTABLE!!" I look at him like he's on crack and proceed to put the book back and then explain "I couldn't see the price, no one was available, and I WAS interested in purchasing this book." He responds "I'M VERY UNCOMFORTABLE!!!" By they way, the book I was looking at was like a 6.0 Malibu Sun--like a $150 book at the time. I explained, "you need to relax, it's not a big deal and doesn't warrant screaming; if I damage the book, I'll pay for it." He then says "I DON'T CARE! IF YOU WANT TO SEE A BOOK--ASK!" While my adrenaline was pumped, and I was anticipating a physical confrontation, he was smart enough not try anything stupid--so I just quietly walked away. What's funny is that several people walked away from his booth after watching the incident unfold and only seconds after they left did he realize everyone witnessed his psychotic outburst. You could see the flushed and embarrassed look on his face as he smiled awkwardly at the few customers that remained. I wish I could have recorded this incident; don't do business with this person.

Pretty common edicate is to ask for a price and not to handle a book unless the staff person hands it to you. What happens if you drop it? Sure, the way that he had the books displayed is very open and seems like a library but this stuff is expensive. For cons, the sellers aren't given alot of space to work with and everyone wants to have closer views. My advice is just to be more cautious, courteous and patient

Wow, my ears totally perked up as soon the the guy with Elveen mentioned Frank & Sons! I was going there for my comics back in the '90's while in college in SoCal. Even now, when I go back to visit friends/family, I try to make a point of revisiting, especially at their new location. Have nephews and a niece now asking me to take them there when I'm visiting. 🙂

Well, another video focusing on the dealers perspective. Never been a fan of listening to dealers dictate the state of our hobby. It's like watching CNBC Money analysts pumping and dumping stocks and controlling the narrative. Moving on, I could not begin nor stomach through the longest interview of the video so I skipped it entirely. The fast forward button is mightier than the sword. That being said, I do like to hear what Brad of FVF Comics occasionally opines. Forward the video to the 48:40 mark and listen to what Brad says about buyers looking for great deals based on previously sold books. I completely agree with him. It is not "his" responsibility to match a great deal based on local dealers, online auctions, or a deal from a friend of a friend needing to unload. But it is definately everyone's responsibility to get the best damn price you can, no matter where, including these large comic cons. Without your money, they are museums of comic books. Continue supporting your local LCS's, eBay sellers with great feedback, and your Facebook/IG comic book community of sellers with established reputable track records. There is where the BEST deals are my fellow collectors. All the best!

That's the sad state of the hobby now. All these "dealers" are essentially venture capitalists, buying old collections, breaking them down and flipping them. I was at a con this past weekend with around 40-50 vendors and I only found one that had any books published in the past year. Old books and keys are great but it just seems wrong to not be supporting the current industry as well.

I scored an amazing five issue block of EC Haunt of Fears for FMV (all mid grade ob) at C2E2. Dealers had circa 2021 wall book prices, but were willing to deal. The bins were where the action was at, some good finds for sure. My best bin find was a higher grade Giant Size Chillers 1 for 25% off FMV. Great con, felt almost pre-Covid, which was nice to see.

Galactus books are definitely surging. Several dealers at the show still had their stock priced at 2021 levels, I just don’t get it; most collectors are savvy enough to walk away. Dealers who repriced or who offered hefty discounts did well. Old romance books are generally scarce (we spoke about that, Swaggle); F/VF confirmed that vintage romance is doing really well.

Also people don't want to pay premiums for some company to seal up your book and put an arbitrary grade on it. 100% of people who send comics out for grading can't be certain if the book they're sending out is a 9.4, 9.6 or 9.8 because its arbitrary, and if its that loose then what's the point?

You got to take what comic book dealers are saying with a grain of salt. They are in the business of selling comic books and you should not be taking financial advice from them. As a buyer, your best weapon is to walk away. A seller doesn't need to match the lowest GPA price, and you don't need to match the seller's asking price either. Unless the book is really rare and difficult to find, you will always be able to find another book eventually. Even the mega key books - just check Heritage Auctions. I wanted to buy a 8.5 Fantastic Four 52 last year and dealers were asking for around 4.5K. I still see it for sale and it dropped to 3K. And I am still in no hurry to buy it. You don't want to catch a falling knife.
