I do not look disabled. I do not look sick. Therefore, I can't be, right? In our society, people often debate questions like what makes someone disabled and what do disabled people look like. That can lead to people questioning themselves and others: "Are you disabled enough?" In today's video, I'm explaining what does invisible disability mean and what it is like to have an invisible disability. Because of the stereotype society has of disabled people, I've often asked myself "Do I really have a disability?" However, just because you can't see my disability does not make it stop existing. I have an invisible disability (actually, I have multiple). I'm disabled but I don't look like it, and that is okay. It doesn’t make me any less disabled.

Hey everyone, I'm Devin! I currently have my Associates and Bachelor’s degrees in Psychology. Before the pandemic, I was working towards my Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. That was put on hold because I have an autoimmune disease (Ulcerative Colitis) that has caused me to be in quarantine for over 7 months at this point. I also have multiple mental illnesses (Depression, Anxiety, ADHD, Borderline Personality Disorder, Dependent Personality Disorder) that I have been dealing with for most of my life. I post videos about living with chronic physical and mental illnesses, using both my personal experiences and my educational background in the mental health field. My contact links are included below if anyone would like to reach out! 💙

Thank you! My primary care physician make sure to put in his notes every time we talk that I look very well put together. I think the latest was “meticulously groomed“. I’m trying to file for disability and getting the papers together and it’s a struggle… I expect pushback from the disability I don’t understand why my Dr. puts notes about how good I look after every visit. I don’t leave the house if I’m not put together, able to open my eyes, choking back vomit, or hold conversations. …Therefore I rarely leave the house. I’ve lost my friendships, can’t work, I feel like all I do is go to doctor appointments and run around picking up prescriptions when I’m on my “good“ days. Nobody offers to help me with anything and I cry by myself a lot. I don’t blame people I know they don’t understand but I know that if tables were turned and I was listening to all of them talk about being unable to reach a mile stone I would offer to help in someway. There’s no way I would just say “good luck with that “. I’ve been with them through all their exciting milestones and I have different kinds of milestones I need help with and support on. Inevitably the best I’ll get is the inevitable have you tried… Enter a list of obnoxious and generic BS they saw on the Internet or heard about from a friend of a friend of a friend. I’m really frustrated right now &. your video’s helping me feel not so alone. Xoxo

I just learned about hidden disabilities. I have mental illness and cognitive issues. I was in a toxic relationship and because of my disability, I endured abuse from this person for a long time. I was depended on this person. Next year I will be 4 years single and free from this person😔🤗

An interesting video. I remember when I was diagnosed with mental illness and people were really surprised that I was mentally ill, because I seemed like I was such a social butterfly. Little did they know that it was because of my social anxiety that I never stopped talking (I hate silence in social environments) therefore making me the life of the party. Good video!

The idea that there is any ONE way to look disabled baffles me. You really can't stereotype anybody, you have to get to know them. Thank you for watching!

So much truth in this video I know for me people can not see that I am physically missing part of the brain they can not see the brain damage from getting thrown through the air from an explosion they can not see the ptsd or the shoulder trauma from when it was broken or the muscle disorders so instead I get labeled as lazy and useless when I had a parking placard which I need to renew I got criticized for using it even though my knees hurt. Yet people who do not even have a placard get away with parking in those places thinking that just because they have a 6 to 12 year old that automatically gives them the right to park in handicap parking or they park In the wheelchair loading area and when I was in college I hated using the spell and grammar check device that the disability office gave me because other students felt it gave me an unfair advantage in class. Or they questioned why my handouts where always on blue paper instead of white like everyone else's. Yet everyone was acceptable of my assigned seat at the front of the class probably because they could see that I have to wear glasses.

I'm so sorry for your experiences. Just because you may not be visibly disabled does not change how your disability affects your everyday life. I know it's hard, but try not to feel bad for any accommodations given to you. You deserve them. Don't let other people's ignorant comments keep you from getting the help you need and rightfully deserve. I hope things are going better for you and I'm sending so much positive energy your way!

I do have a disability you can see. I don't post about it because if I have a different opinion people question my intelligence. However, there are parts of my disability people can't see. I can't eat certain foods and things like that. It is lonely when people don't want to hang out anymore.

The lack of empathy of other people really sucks sometimes. I feel like everyone's lives would be better if we were all a little more empathetic, if we cared a little more about other people's feelings and experiences. I'm sorry you've had to deal with other people being ignorant.
