Every day, specialists deliver high-quality care in 68 disciplines in health centres across Canada. Yet many Canadians know very little about what many specialists actually do, and the important role these disciplines play in Canada’s health care system.
This video provides a brief high-level overview of what General Surgeons actually do, their training, and their role in Canadian health care.

@@chauanhdang9227 I'd encourage them to do it. You can get a high paying jobs after only four years and with a few extra classes can take the MCAT if you still want to. A lot of our chemE classes are similar to premed and if they're still passionate they can def try that. It's good to have a back up for any pre med student. Plus as a chemE I can work in the medical field and multiple other fields which I like

Interesting video overall. The introduction saying that if you "get sick or have a problem" in the field a general surgeon is the most useful to have is a little presumptuous and probably not entirely accurate. I can think of a few other types of physicians that would be as, or more useful for many problems, but really I think it's more appropriate to point out that we should be acknowledging the importance of all members of medical teams and not having each self-declare they are actually the best.

Fearun9033 Well what about emergency physicians or ICU doctors? I'm not saying they're better than general surgeons, I'm just saying we shouldn't be implying general surgeons would be better than them when people "get sick or have a problem." It's just so vague and basically includes all of medicine. A huge portion of people getting sick or having a problem is going to be regarding mental health. Acute metabolic issues like diabetic ketoacidosis and acute vascular issues like strokes would also be included. The people I mentioned probably deal with this more often. These are only acute causes of people getting sick or having problems, and only a few.

In a serious emergency you'd probably want a General Surgeon, because they do some training in emergency medicine and can perform life saving surgery in almost all areas of the body except chest and head and neck. With that being said, EM has an important role but can't do surgery. If lets say you could only have one doctor for the next 7 days u'd want a general surgeon, if its for lets say 12 hours for the most part an Emerg Doc would be just as good if not slightly better. You'd be surprised but u probs wouldn't need an ICU doc just because ICU docs work only in ICUs, they specialize in tertiary care not in field care. General Surgeons are sometimes trained in ICU as well.

im confuse between general surgeon and fellowship specialties, because surgical residence are also called general surgeon and i don't seem to be finding any fellowship call general surgeon but apparently its a specialties as well?
@HonestlyHenry18

Residents are called General Surgeons because they are in the learning program of all types of surgery. In there last year of residency, they come into signing on a fellow ship, which is about an extra 2-3 years of practice in whatever they want to specialize. Whether it be Ortho, Cardio, Neuro, Peds, etc. General Surgeons specialize in about 4 different areas of the body, while Ortho is with bones, Cardio is with the heart and lungs, Peds is with children, and Neuro is with the brain and spine. I'm studying to be a Cardiothorasic Surgeon! At least at this point in time, that's what I feel I want to specialize as.

+Henry Sierra so residency is called general surgeon and they can proceed to fellowship as a general surgeon which is a specialties of gastrointestinal right? And wow! Cardiothoracic surgeon! Respect
@HonestlyHenry18

+WillJ Y Residency is the 5-7 years of the learning program in which the Residents learn over a very broad and generalized spectrum of surgery types, which is why they say they are General Surgeons, so technically, I guess you could say that. Proceeding to the Fellowship, yes they specialize in general, and yes, gastrointestinal is most certainly if not what they specialize in, but it covers other areas as well. Let's say someone completed a fellowship to general surgery, and is now an attending, well they can sub-specialize in Ortho, and perform an amputation in trauma resulting from a car accident. They won't necessarily always be having to perform intestinal surgery, and thank you.

Henry, what you are describing is the American system of residency, which is quite different from the Canadian residency process (the one described in this video). In Canada, General Surgery is a 5-year residency and is a specialty in and of itself. After finishing residency, you become a specialist; a general surgeon. This is on the same level of specialization as an orthopedic surgeon, an ENT surgeon, or an ophthalmologist, except we specialize in gastrointestinal and breast cancer surgery. After residency, general surgeons have the option of super-specializing within a subspecialty of general surgery. Some examples that are available: colorectal surgery, hepatopancreaticobiliary (HPB) surgery, trauma/acute care surgery, surgical critical care (ICU), surgical oncology, transplant surgery, etc. You are right in that in the US, General Surgery residency is just a precursor and an entry program to other specialties. I think the equivalent of a Canadian General Surgeon in the US would be kind of a mixed acute care/colorectal surgeon. Hope this clarifies things for you Will!

How many years will it take to become a General Surgeon including MBBS time? I am a little bit confused about general surgeons. Will they do all kinds of surgery. And what's the difference between a General Surgeon and trauma surgeons?

On average, 4 years after mbbs in my country, they do all kinds of surgery in every surgical field especially in a conditions where surgery is an emergency, but nowadays they are mostly do head and neck,thoracic (excluding the heart and great vessel), abdominal,oncologic and vascular surgery Trauma surgery is one of sub specialty of general surgery, but general surgery CAN do trauma surgery within their competence
