Having a look at what heavy arrows do in Excalibur axiom. Others have touched on this I though it might be informative to have a go at it.

My Tenpoint Viper S400 came with 445 gr bolts. They shot good , i went down to a 400 gr bolt and it shoots just as good is shooting 392 fps and just blows thru deer 🦌 everyone's preaching weight but on a deer sized animal a 400 total weight bolt works great and doesn't drop as fast. In my compounds I shot the same weight arrows and they flew fast and true just like my crossbow bolts.

Very true a crossbow shooting ~400 grains at ~400 fps is plenty good for deer size, pretty much industry standard these day. For practical hunting I would not deviate from that. The videos' main goal is, answer the question posed in the title.

This is great. I wish I kept my vortex.

i think the best for hunting is something between first 2 arrows used. after that the speed decreases too much

I think that is right. I've had fun shooting the ridiculously heavy stuff, it's like shooting a hammer. I was inspired in part by Todd'sStuff channel in his discussions about shooting heavy "mace head" bolts.

Very interesting, but surely the (much) more relevant metric to hunters in relation to weight of arrow or bolt would be in terms of Momentum (which would achieve penetration more effectively) rather than K/e? I think you would see a very significant increase there as mass increases.
@bokkenwielderful9 ай бұрын
Yes, you are correct. It is my mistake for not discussing momentum. One thing I found is energy has an upper limit, only so many foot pounds in any given bow. Momentum will stack indefinitely. If I could shoot an anvil (silly but stay with me) from the crossbow the energy would be stable~ish but the momentum would go through the roof. If I do any more on this subject, in the future, I will address this.

Ok now I’m really curious. I’m wondering if a) you could get a crossbow bolt to 3200 gn without the cane head and rather a heavy fixed head. And b) could you make a heavier vertical compound bow arrow than that? Great video btw 👍 very educational
@bokkenwielderful8 ай бұрын
Thank you! Getting an arrow that heavy without duct taping a bowie knife to it will be hard, making it shoot out a vertical compound will have its challenges. (Longer arrow and no deck to rest everything on), ill see what I can do.
@paulheberling27508 ай бұрын
@@bokkenwielderful I’m wondering because a vertical bow arrow is much longer than a crossbow bolt. So it seems you could fit more mass inside it (shafts/stackable inserts) than a crossbows? Granted the spine would need to be very stiff, like next to 0. Am I right?
@bokkenwielderful8 ай бұрын
@@paulheberling2750 it would need to be stiff, fun fact, the 4.2 mm shafts fit in 5.2 mm, so one can make very ridged arrow this way.
@paulheberling27508 ай бұрын
@@bokkenwielderful oh wow, I didn’t know. So you could make a really stiff vert bow arrow heavier than a really heavy crossbow bolt?
@bokkenwielderful8 ай бұрын
@@paulheberling2750 should be possible, just need to collect the materials.
