My personal opinion varies a bit. I love muay thai and I train 5 days a week, but I am very fascinated with lethwei. They train their punches for good form and accuracy to avoid injury. In Thai boxing, we get away with alot of sloppy punches because of the protection of the glove. The point system and gambling influence has led to many beautiful kicks (scored higher), and a certain rythym and evolution in the progression of rounds as the fighters feel each other out. This leads to a more elegant and asthetically pleasing fight in general, and the 8 limbs is often praised for this beauty. Lethwei is about as raw and real as it gets. I admire the use of headbutts as it is a very lethal tool and drastically changes the clinch objective. The smaller, faster, and more lethal fists means the opponent needs rely more on slipping, swift fight IQ and intuition in order to read, dodge, and attack. The fights can be over very quickly and you can miss the action if you blink! I would love to train lethwei myself and I augment my thai boxing training with some lethwei combos and some bare knuckle training; but would I get in the lethwei ring? Hardly a chance in hell unless the money was big and I was confident I would dominate. Double knockout? I was blown away at first at how tough this sport is but ya...way too fucking barbaric!!
@VincentMMALife4 жыл бұрын
Lethwei has some good parts . I'm all for headbutts in mma. But the huge problem with no gloves and headbutts is that fighters are going to train bareknuckle striking and headbutting too. That will for sure lead to more headtrauma so shorter fighting careers. Also the cuts will lead to way more facial reconstruction surgeries. Look at Nate Diaz, he bleeds so easily thanks to all the scar tissue he has gained trough bareknuckle street fighting. So gloves are necessary in my opinion.

There was an issue of Ultimate Spider-Man that addressed this issue, since the young Peter Parker didn’t actually know how to fight, he just had superpowers. Letwhei born from war between Thai and Myanmar. During ancient time Kings from Burma trying to find the best system to win their enemy, mostly Thai. Thai, Burma, Siamese, and Khmer are so close to each other. They trade lot of arts and culture. But Kings from Myanmar doesn't really care about the art, instead they care more about combat side of fighting. So they gather lot of fighter like gladiator and find the best fighter. If they found one they use that fighting style as a fighting system for their army. No matter what style is, always a smart and vicious fighter always win. So Lethwei is a quickest and mean to end your opponent lives, not just defend. If you are in a war, you don't want to end up on the ground. Skallagrim, Shadiversity, Metatron, and (less so focused on hand-to-hand) Lindybeige are also good places to get your 'toes wet', if you pardon the turn of phrase. Not the most useful talent I have/train, but Sabre fencing is very fun, and Coach nails it -- if you devote enough time and effort to become even a modestly skilled fencer, as long as you remember the fundamentals, you'll learn some reasonably universal footwork and distance awareness. So I have a question relating to fighting without gloves. Say in any self defense situation, odds are that unless its winter time, most of us do not wear gloves regularly. So my question is: why are open hand strikes overlooked in most mma communities? What are your thoughts on open hand striking such as palm strikes? In the context of self defense? From personal experience I know its still possible to break your hand while delivering a palm strike but I feel that it's far less likely than rocking a bare fist into someone's face. I have found karate chops to be quite painful on the hands and fairly ineffective in most cases except to strikes to the neck, but palm strikes have worked well for me in several situations. No one seems to really talk much about open hand fighting aside from the eye gouging that occurs in MMA from time to time, is there a reason why it is so often overlooked? That said I prefer to carry a knife for self defense but in many cases you don't have the time to reach for a weapon when being attacked and I think palm strikes are useful to gain space and protect yourself while minimizing the damage done to your hands.
@nagyzoli4 жыл бұрын
Because the risk of broken fingers. If the open hand is not "PROPERLY" open hand, you risk striking with your pinky or ring finger as the main impact point and those are weak. Have you ever been a goalie in a football match? And try to parry a real strong ball and you only barely reach it. The balls slams into the upper part of your fingers and hyperextend the fingers backward. Now imagine the ball is the skull or shin. That is why even if my style (ninjutsu) uses soft blocks a lot (redirect, not slam into the arm), I always use half open hand in sparring (like you would hold your hand to drink water from it). That is the safest way to avoid injury (you of course do not strike that hard)

I do however prefer no gloves because i like combat sports to be closer to what some people call "pure" sporting combat can never be the same as a street fight, but removing as much separation of the two as possible is what i personally want. meaning i very much appreciate them having headbutts and standing throws as well. Clinching at the usual muay thai range is dangerous because you can eat forward headbutts so lethwei clinches are basically bearhugs, chest-to-chest. The only thing to really come out of that (since there's no takedowns) is landing an elbow as you disengage. Not very productive, and takes away a very exciting range of combat. I believe that there was a separate rest period to stop bleeding, too. The WLC got rid of the one-time special rest, which is good. I'm not in favour of it, but I also don't like that they added the decision win either.

I don't know, headbutt seems kind of dangerous long term
@robertbrozewicz8003 Жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right about the doube KO as being wrong. Maybe in 1% of cases the guy knocked out will wn but most of the time will just get knocked out again.

Doesnt wrapping the hands protect a lot? I don't think the head butts causes much shorter fights. It forces the fighters to keep distance so the head can't reach. It's takes a lot of skill and I think it is closer to a real fight than anything else which is what I like about it. The only unrealistic thing is no grappling. I prefer to watch a good mma match because of the variety of fight styles, but I like Lethwei too. Also I am Canadian and a French Canadian guy, Dave Leduc, is the Lethwei champion and a very nice guy.
@RamseyDewey2 жыл бұрын
Wrapping your hands protects your hands and allows you to punch significantly harder.
@vancityband65774 жыл бұрын
Hi Ramsay, do you think grapplers should be impaired like strikers are with gloves? Grapplers aren't forced to reduce the strength of their hand grips or degree of hip motion in guards in the interest of fighter safety. Gloves allow people who never learned to block to eat more damage (e.g. helmet guard) while reducing the effectiveness of strikes for people who train bareknuckle (e.g. makiwara). Gloves impair the most basic striking tool but there is no basic grappling impairment. As an MMA coach, I'd love to hear your opinion.
@czr47522 жыл бұрын
I’m not Ramsey, but strikers are NOT impaired with gloves. Gloves do not protect your opponent, they protect your hands. Allowing you to punch harder and more often because you have less stress going to the bones and joints of your hands. The only time a grappler hurts themselves is if they do something incorrectly (wrestlers not protecting guillotine chokes, Ben Askren taking a shot out of nowhere and getting kneed by Masvidal, judoka/wrestlers executing poor timing and control on a throw)

I love that Lethwei is more hardcore.
@abmong4 жыл бұрын
Yeah but being more hardcore doesn’t make it a better sport. Muay Thai can be just as hardcore if they roll back the rules to be more like Muay Boran. With elbows and knees to the head, imagine an incoming headbutt being met with an elbow... there’ll be too many deaths which would make it too unsafe to be a sport. Muay Boran, like ancient Lethwei was meant for killing. Not for sport.

The KO revival during the bout I agree is very controversial. But thankfully not part of the newer major shows. A good overview of this part of lethwei can be found here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mayilq6Z17fQeWg.html

broken hands happen all the time in lethwei... also it sounds like a little bit of a pose to me saying such an entertaining combat sport as lethwei could be "boring". Lethwei is all about endurance, pain tolerance, spirit toughness and heart. It's awesome.

Hey Ramsey big fan. I’m just getting back into training during quarantine due to an shoulder injury I’ve had for some weeks now from wrestling. I want to know if you suggest going all out on the bag or taking it slow with shadow boxing till I feel my shoulders at 100% id say it’s at 95% right now and I’m itching to train again if you have any tips of how to get back into a regiment as well since I’ve been injured haven’t moved around much

Aaaah finally! I ask you to kindly do a video regarding Lethwei and you did one Mr. Optimus Prime! Thank first of all, secondly my man .. Lethwei i quite raw and has very less technique as opposed to brute force and hardcore striking. It is the enemy of longevity due to the bare knuckle and head butt factor involved. The double ko is not a rule but rather a choice buddy, after the first knockout the fighter is given the option to quit or continue .. Its the 2 minute time out rule thats not good for the brain actually. What i like about it is that Lethwei is gonna make u tough as nails and with no points system ull get to really fight freely haha! Thats about it Ramsey my man ! Thanks again! ❤️🙏🏼

Hey Ramsey, great take on the topic, I would love to clinch in such a way that defends headbutts, do you have anything in mind?
@RamseyDewey Жыл бұрын
Keep your opponent’s head between your shoulder and the pit of your neck, keep your head lower than his, and don’t give the other guy any space to move his head while clinching. That’s basic wrestling. “Accidental” headbutts happen all the time in all combat sports that involve grappling. Wrestle for a minute and you’ll learn really quick to control the other guy’s and not to leave your face open.

You misrepresented it a bit, in traditional Lethwei a KO wins the fight otherwise it’s a draw. But the corner can choose to “revive” their fighter, and if they can do so in 2 minutes, then they go back out and fight. You don’t have to get 2 KO’s to win all the time. WLC also have scrapped this rule.
@fritzkreisler23303 жыл бұрын
You are correct, but the fighters are often under alot of pressure from their coaches etc... To prove their manhood by continuing to fight, so they often do.

Thanks for the video. I agreed with everything except one thing... Boring to watch?? Its the most brutal combat sport in the world. It's like 2 whole levels above Muay Thai. What makes it entertaining to watch is that they actually are trying there hardest to knockout there opponent at all times or else they get a draw or lose. It has a much more intense feel to it than thai boxing.

I've seen many lethwei fights and I don't remember headbutts being that important to any fighter to win, never saw it cut any either. On the wrapping on hands I really think that they don't do any god for the sport, I'd rather have all fighters wearing only gloves without wrapping, and thats the way I train, I stopped using wrapping because they gave me a wrist injury (say that I don't know how to wrap or that I do it too hard, anyways it doesn't work for me and not using them made me give more attention to hand conditioning which is great for someone who trains mostly for self defense).
