As an American living in Italy, I have found that most Italians are quite welcoming while other europeans I meet here are often very condescending. Being able to speak a little of the language helps a lot. In Florence, most American students here do not study any Italian and are often loud and rude. It has unfortunately led to a poor reputation for American students in this city.

I visited Florence last June with my family and we loved it and we were treated so well by the vast majority of the Italians we met. Knowing even a little bit of Italian was helpful. I taught my 12 year old son how to ask for a table in Italian and Viola, no reservations needed! The only time our party of 6 did not get seated was when I asked if we could get a table in English. Whoops. Now if only I can figure out how to get my kids through collage and then be able to retire in Italy. lol

I am surprised by the positive comments the Italians made about Americans. I thought that Europeans, in general, including Italians, think of the "ugly American." Some Americans are not very culturally sophisticated and can be USA-centric, and as tourists, I wonder if we annoy. The Italians interviewed in this video took a generous view of Americans. It was rather encouraging and not what I expected.

Keep in mind that many people in Europe are just unhappy and not educated enough to know about the USA enough to actually be able to judge the country. I am German and many Germans tend to look bad on the USA but I can guarantee you that they have no idea how beautiful and kind hearted Americans are. People who talk badly about others are just unhappy themselves. The USA is a fantastic country and I have met the most kind-hearted people there, always willing to help. People who talk down on Americans are not worth my time because they are close-minded, havent even lived in the USA and make judgements based on what they see on the media. Everyone who has lived in the USA or has visited knows what an innovative country it is and with great entrepreneur opportunities, people are just jealous!! Look at the amazing nature in USA, all the great food options, opportunities and great network connections you can make as Americans are always willing to give you a chance.

@@truthseeker4084 It's funny you should mention general ignorance like that. Years ago I visited Paris and was warned at how terrible Parisians are to Americans. I was kind of nervous and I prepared myself. I also went out of my way to not be the kind of American tourist they were expecting and I had a wonderful time, everyone was so kind and if I needed help I would open the interaction with a French greeting and they were happy to help.

I found this very moving. My grandparents came here from Abruzzo, and if they hadn't, I (or whoever would have been born had my father not met my American mother) would still be living there, but I never even visited until I was 42. I fell so in love with Sorrento and Naples that I began visiting every year, Sicily, Puglia, Rome, another week in Naples. Here I am, hoping someday to retire in Italy at least partially because I see things turning very ugly here in the U.S., yet so many Italians have (mostly) positive feelings about us, which I was NOT necessarily expecting. (I wonder if any interviews were left out because the interviewees were like, "Odio gli Stati Uniti!") A few people mentioned wanting to see the entire country, which is how I feel about Italy!

I was very pleasantly surprised to hear people say so many positive things about Americans and the US. Having visited Italy twice, I already knew that many Italians are very knowledgeable about American music, TV, and movies, but this video showed me something new: I had absolutely no idea that there were Italians who avidly followed American sports. And that's probably because I've been bored by team sports my whole life.

I'm german (and learning italian in school at the moment) and i just want to say something about europeans being knowledgeable about american culture. Because it has been a big influence on our culture(s)since i guess the 1950s. Like there are so many translated books, and movies, basically every radio also plays american pop everybody learns english from like 5th grade on (i guess that varys from country to country) in school, the games are shown on tv etc. I have to admit i'm not the biggest fan of the us but thats mainly because of your government (both democrats and Republicans btw. Even though the democrats are obviously better. I just think the two party system sucks) and you living in such a hypercapitalistic country that there are many only poorly educated people who are still conditioned to love their country above everything. It just makes no sense to me, and i also think it could be potentially dangerous for your country becoming facist. Anyway, that was a long rant about poltics i'm sorry i just think it's very interesting to hear diffrent peoples opinions. (Also i can't actually talk for every country, thats just my experience as someone who grew up in southern germany and traveled alot through europe with their parents as a child)

As an American, I found these answers surprising, but in a positive way. I'm glad people can (hopefully) separate people from the actions of government, and am also glad Italian people recognize how very special Italy is to Americans, myself included. Having experienced condescending attitudes from people in some other European countries, it was encouraging to hear these responses. I'm learning Italian not only because the language is beautiful, but also in hope of connecting with the Italian people when I travel to Italy this year.

This was good to hear. I've been to Italy five times and I have wondered sometimes what they think of us. I like to think I'm somehow special when I'm there because of my Italian surname but to them I'm just another American who only knows a few phrases of their language. I think that as tourists we are sometimes subjected to brusque treatment by people in the "hospitality" industry but this video helps me realize that this may not reflect their opinions of us overall. I have met many very friendly cab drivers, hotel staff, waiters and other random people there and I come home and tell people about them. An older lady in Riomaggiore told me how her generation remembers that American soldiers were good to them after the war. Italians have bigger smiles than I've ever seen in the USA.

Talking with all the Americans in the comments down here, it seems pretty clear that all these people are being nice and not mentioning any bad things that may come to mind. But anyone who is somewhat informed knows about: -the enormous homeless population in your big metropolitan areas, enough to be comparable in size to entire cities. -High crime rates and widespread violence, an unsettling amount of firearms and other weapons present everywhere, skyrocketing drugs abuse, societal polarization and extremism. -Your car-centric society with its unsightly urban planning and zoning, being one of the major players in the absence of basic means of public transport. -Immense disparities in wealth distribution and all that comes with it, such as land ownership. -Your healthcare system isn't a system to begin with, and it's an inflated business protected by forces from above, despite what the name suggests, it doesn't "care" about your "health". It's strictly related to your insurance and pharmaceutical systems, all connected and rotten to the core, in a symbiotic relationship with eachother and your politics just like your arms manufacturers... lobbying, investments, "donations". A grand orchestra lead by its great director: money... and to money they answer, not people. -Cancel culture, "wokeness", a generalized degradation of morals. -Let's not even talk about your foreign politics, from full on wars to coups, assassinations, kidnappings, torture, funding terrorists and rebel groups, proxy wars, "peacekeeping" missions, coercion, sanctions, experiments, even on large scale, covered up events, silenced people, influenced media etc .... The list goes on and on.... Yes I'm looking especially at you Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), an essay hundreds of pages long wouldn't be enough for all of this. There are of course many good things about the US too, all of the above is simply to say that like any other country, the US is far from perfect. So many people don't like how Americans think of their country as if it's in a league of its own, "Land of the Free, Home of the Brave baby, 'Murica f@*k yeah!!🦅🇺🇲🦅". Land of the absolute superlatives, biggest, strongest, richest, freest, most this, most that etc...

Meanwhile I've been to Italy twice (about to go my 3rd time in May) and I always love the little villages and quite places. But also the chaos of Napoli and Rome. Italy is such a beautiful place. But nice to hear interest of Italians wanting to visit the USA. I am learning Italian so your videos are always awesome. And great to finally see what Italians think of us American 😂😂😂

Il signore che l'ha detto "c'è uno scambio culturale molto intenso," ha ragione. Le influenze italiane esistono ovunque, al punto che forse sono state assorbite dalla cultura di qui: musica, lingua, moda, trasporti, technology (I just learned that it was an Italian who invented the microchip and did so in the U.S.A.), e ovviamente cibo! I can't think of one that i dislike, even Sweden, whose citizens sampled elsewhere seem to hate us. 🙂 It's ok though....I'm pretty sure that the U.S. doesn't hate any of you all. LOL seriously! for those who aren't aware, crime has gone through the roof in both of those cities and it's pretty bad. Some crime rates have gone up slightly in California, but it isn't what many people would like you to beleive. There is a narrative created by Fox News and conservatives that liberal cities are terrible. This is rediculous. Floridas homicide rate was roughly 50 percent higher than New York’s in 2021. San Francisco and Seattle - have roughly half the murder rates as Southern big cities. If crime is what you're worried aboiut stay away from Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, South Carolina, Missouri, Illinois, Maryland, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Georgia. California's gun death rate is 43% lower than the rest of the nation because they have strict gun control laws.

I’m actually surprised by the cities many of these Italians say they wanted to visit, that window of opportunity is gone in many of those cities, especially Chicago and San Francisco. I’d gear them more towards the areas they likely don’t know about or the places that are up and coming, like Texas, Nashville, the states with the national parks that are not over crowded. I think Miami is a good choice, Santa Cruz is not as bad as the rest of California (coming from a Californian), maybe visit Boston for historical context but I think that the mindset they’re looking for is more cultural influences. Right now NYC isn’t ideal, LA is dystopian, Portland and Seattle are not fairing well, and hell no to Chicago and San Francisco. I beg tourists to stay away from those cities, if you do go there you better have a friend who will look after you!
