No it's not! That is a very dangerous way of defining personal freedom and freedom of speech. It's a slippery slope, and if you think like that all that needs to be done to refute your arguments is to say that you are attacking my personal freedom, that you haven't the right to defy my beliefs. Thinking like that leads to censorship of the worst kind.
@thedreadedlion904 жыл бұрын
@@MiguelCoBMaggot actually it's a very good sentence that explains the principle of equality. It's not meant has an attack on freedom by imposing limitations but instead it explains that freedom comes with accountability and it must be balanced with morals and ethics to achieve a peaceful equilibrium. Only by balancing all 3 can you have integrity. Perhaps you would be okay if someone said: "With great power comes great responsibility" - it means the exact same thing. Freedom is a power.... but without responsibilities it's just savagery!
@MiguelCoBMaggot4 жыл бұрын
@@thedreadedlion90 although I agree with much of what you said about morality and ethics and balance, I absolutely abhorr the saying "your freedom ends where mine begins." It is, simply put, an impediment to living in harmony. People that don't understand this are doomed to be separated by simple differences, instead of united for a greater purpose, all the while believing the contrary, that they are the drivers of that purpose. Very insidious...
@thedreadedlion904 жыл бұрын
@@MiguelCoBMaggot I understand your concern regarding freedoom of speech although that's only a concern for those who have yet to fully grasp its concept. The sentence that you fear may lead a government to justify censorship is also the very weapon against it! As this statement is logical and fully comprehensive, please see here: "Your freedom ends where another person's freedoom begins" Now using the same logic one can argue: "Your governments' freedoom ends where the people's freedoms begins" Overall, both people and governments should exercise their freedoms with reason and modesty. Logically: 1+1=2 (no argument there) However, any government could one day tell you that 1+1=3 (through manipulation or censorship) but those who understand Logic will not be fooled! Nowadays with so many Fake News flooding the media it's becoming increasingly harder to distinguish the lies from the truth. The spread of misinformation can single handedly cripple an organization and even society. Therefore, even freedom of speech must be used responsibly. Regarding how this may affect arts and culture, specially comedy and comedians: I think people should understand that comedians are actors and storytellers that sometimes act out the role for an outrageous character. Hence, their actions and opinions while acting these parts should not be taken out of context and argued as real facts. The same can not be said from journalist who will go to any lengths to keep the attention of the public with sensationalism and misinformation. Journalism should serve a single purpose: to truthfully and accurately report events and matters of public interest. The harassment of celebreties and public figures for the sake of reporting on their daily lives has no place in serious journalism as these do not classify as matters of public interest. Such things can only be classified as gossip and be referred in segments for entertainment.

For anybody wondering how true this is, here's my perspective, as an LGBT native portuguese: - politically speaking yes, Portugal is indeed very open-minded and free. LGBT unions and marriages are recognized as much as heterosexual ones, from a legal standpoint. - socially speaking... Portugal is a country with heavy catholic roots. So you'll definitely experience some dissonance between what's established politically and what the people actually think. I'd say the old man's opinion, coupled in with the other dismissive lady that followed after is perhaps the most accurate when speaking of the country in general: LGBT aren't "truly accepted" (thus reinforcing the "people choosing to not answer and simply state they're anti-lgbt" part) and the portuguese are more of a "not my business" kind of people (albeit some still engage in gossip, old ladies in particular), but no one agrees that bullying based on that should exist either. So it's very unlikely that one will be a victim of straight up acts of violence solely for being LGBT. It'll be more likely for you to be slightly discriminated, but opinions in general tend to improve near big cities, rather than rural towns. Even there, only very few people will be rude against you, everyone else will take the cold "not my business" approach. - with that said, what the young man stated about younger generations and school bullying is unfortunately untrue: kids remain immature to this. Nothing has changed, although due to awareness campaigns most kids usually tend to be more accepting and empathetic by the time they're young adults. Having college/university experience also helps, as students meet people from different areas of the country. In short your experience will be... mixed. If you're LGBT+, and moving to Portugal, it'll be better to seek out a place in the big cities or somewhere around them. From there on, it's a matter of seeking the right people to befriend. College students, particularly those in more artistic or humanistic fields, tend to be the most accepting, although you can find such people anywhere really.

@thedreadedlion904 жыл бұрын
It's true! Sometimes when I hear Russian or Polish from afar I think someone is speaking Portuguese. I think EU Portuguese (from Portugal) shares several similarities with Russian. I know both are stress-timed languages with very similar spacing and phonetically there's an abundance of sibilants and palato alveolar consonants (like ch sh x s ss j z). We also have palatalized consonants ( lh, nh - in spanish they use ñ instead of nh) and lots of nasal vowels and diphtongs ( ã ê ão ãe õe). Which overall make them sound similar to the untrained ears, but that's about it because there's no common "ancestor" between the two languages.

Ha I'm Portuguese and I know that the old generation, does not like it and I even have to hide it from my other half of my family.... due to respect for them. I love who I love and if people dont like it, "fuck them" 😂 I've never celebrated pride in Portugal just in the UK only...

@yarpen264 жыл бұрын
Things work differently in Europe in this regard. In much of Europe you have very little or even no anti-discrimination legislation but there is very little actual violence against gay people. It's the other way around in Latin America

Brazil is the country with the most homicides of transgender people in the world. Even with the legislation in our favor (in theory, lol).
