* 6:10 - "Duits gedeelte" - Compared to the Netherlands, Belgium is a complicated country with a complex system of governance, 6 governments in total, structured on both regional and linguistic grounds. Belgium has a federal Belgian government and is divided into three highly autonomous regions, each with their own government too: Flanders in the north, Wallonia in the south, and the Brussels-Capital Region. Belgium is home to two main linguistic groups or communities: the Dutch-speaking Flemish Community (which has the same government as the Flemish regional government), about 60 percent of the population. Then there is the French-speaking Community, about 40 percent of the population. A small German-speaking Community, numbering around one percent, exists in the East Cantons. Both of these Communities have their own government too because the 3 regions of Belgium do not overlap with the languages spoken there, except for Flanders where the main language is Flemish. In Brussels however, the main language is French, followed by Flemish and a whole range of other international languages. The main language spoken in Wallonia is French and only a small part of it speaks German, close to the border with Germany. The three Communities represent the three official languages of Belgium: (Flemish) Dutch, French and German. This linguistic diversity also results in different and varied cultural identities which, culturally speaking, do not often interact with each other (different television channels, news outlets, etc.). In comparison, the Netherlands is relatively straightforward with only one central government and both a linguistic and cultural unity as Dutch is the main and only standardized language with only some recognized provincial languages (mainly West Frisian) and regional dialects.

I'm learning Dutch right now, and I never fully understood the difference of how Dutch is spoken here in The Netherlands vs in Belgium (i.e. they speak more melodic, softer, etc) So your video was really helpful to me because I can hear the differences clearly! Bedankt voor de goede video!

Hahahaha, yep. Afrikaans makes the most sence if you understand the old Dutch language a bit.. Saw some media from there, and was like what? That is still a word there huh? That seems to be reason why you're average Dutch person understands Afrikaans better than vice vesa.

Yeah making a video about Dutch and not mentioning the Afrikaans language spoken by 7 million native speakers and another 17 million non native speakers is a bit strange! If you considered these languages both developed from modern Dutch and basically Afrikaans is just another form of Dutch spoken on the southern tip of southern Africa. But then again it is also difficult from someone from let's say Belgium and the Netherlands to just pop over to Cape Town (13 000km away) and speak to someone there.

@@gevoel8293 Een diep gesprek gaat moeilijk worden op zijn Nederlands denk ik? Maar met handen en voeten komen we vast een heel eind ;) Grieks leren zou een grotere onderneming zijn. En wat de Vlamingen betreft? Ik lul Fries met mijn kennissen? Frans ken ik niet? (een paar scheldwoorden misschien) Des al niet te min, ik versta Engels beter dan de gemiddelde Nederlander, waar Afrikaners dat ook heel goed kunnen.

@@ocramdouwstra8494 Ja misschien met mensen uit Nederland wel a.g.v. de accent maar ik spreek heel normaal Afrikaans met met mijn vrienden uit België. Ik woon al 25 jaar in Duitsland en hoor ook vaak Nederlands. Toch denk ik niet dat het voor goed opgeleide Afrikaans sprekers en Vlamingen onmogelijk is om een diep gesprek te voeren.

@@gevoel8293 Hahahaha, "de accent" zou hier al een min op je Nederlanse taal zijn ;) Wij noemen het een "het" onze taal kent geen sexualiteit zoals het Spaans bijvoorbeeld? Wat dat betreft? Ik weet dat jullie daar een sterke Engelse en Germaanse invloed hebben? Dit zou in Drente misschien ook kunnen kloppen? We noemen Limburgers ook wel eens mislukte Duitsers.. (sexy taaltje trouwens als vrouwen het spreken). Maar zoals ik zei: Ik spreek Fries, als je een lul wil zijn kun je een Friese rechter eisen in het gerecht.. Maar over het algemeen is on ABN goed te verstaan. Maar naar zuid Afrika zou mij wel wat lijken? Als de politiek eerst eens stopt met een "drama queen"te zijn Ik hoor wel eens dat dit appartheid 2.0 is van je mede burgers?

Due to their largely shared language and history, the Netherlands and Flanders are definitely more similar then you would normally see between two countries, but as a Dutch person who lived in Flanders for a while I think it's the little differences that make it so fun! Besides the differences in food and academic culture, politics, and other things mentioned in the video, to me the most interesting differences are in the language! I often think Flemish is very beautiful, expressive, and admittedly funny as well sometimes! Sadly I am no linguist, but to me modern Flemish is also seemingly closer to old Dutch than modern Dutch, perhaps in part because it is less affected by English and retains more of the French influences. Would love to see a more informed comparison though!

You might think it seems closer to Old Dutch because of Brabantian specifically, I assume ("gij zijt" etc). Flemish is often used ambiguously, either meaning all Dutch speaking Belgians (Brabantians + Flemish + Limburgish) or people who speak the dialect of West Flanders or East Flanders. Most Dutch-speaking Belgians actually speak Brabantian instead of actual Flemish. Your comment makes sense though, Brabantian and Flemish were one of the first forms of Old Dutch and were the primary influence for the Dutch language before Hollandic became the base for standard Dutch - so yes, Brabantian is much older than Hollandic (the modern base for standard Dutch), but it has evolved like every dialect and language over the centuries.

I’m Flemish and to be honest, I don’t really know that much about the Netherlands. We all know the stereotypes and been to a few Dutch cities like Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Maastricht or Eindhoven. But there’s so many more beautiful places I would like to visit once, and from what I know I find Dutch people to be very friendly.

I have lived on the Belgian border for about 20 years on the Dutch side, and a such i visited Belgium a lot. Even on the border there are so many differences in the 2 countries. I always felt that Belgians are more fun, and talk a lot more, and that dutch people are more straight forward and less fun in my opinion. Also visited a lot of cliché Belgian places like Gent and Antwerpen, but a lot of obscure places too. Lot of history

Well having the windows facing eachother isn't just for social control, haha. They design the houses so that you get maximum natural light so you don't have to turn on lights and you heat the house. This saves you a lot of money. We do have curtains but use is optional too, some areas use them a great deal, others not so much. You can just watch what someone else is watching on tv walking on the street early in the evening. Living close to the belgian border I had belgian teachers in highschool and they also talk about the differences. Like when a belgian teacher came to interview for a position other teachers recalled he was wearing a three piece suit and was shocked at how informal our school was. You don't all neatly greet the teacher at the start of class and the teachers wear jeans and a t shirt a lot of the time and people talk out of turn too. My chemistry teacher was belgian and she explained how the school system in Belgium was very geared towards learning thing by heart so they knew a lot but were not as trained to do things in practice and that's what the dutch higher education is geared towards doing. Both have their benefits but it can be hard for students to switch between the two. For instance you may have a lot of group projects and need to communicate more in a dutch university depending on which one you pick. As for what the dutch think about belgians, I think they come across as meek because they speak softer and more circumspect while a dutch person will hit you over the head with their opinions but that's more like an overture of friendship to a dutch person. It means, lets talk! Share what you really think! They like knowing your opinions and if they oppose all the more fun, then you can debate it! You'll often find a dutch person smiling when they do even if they are swearing. Obviously this can be distressing to a belgian person who thinks they are being overruled, attacked, that dutch people want to push their opinions onto you, arrogance. But no, a dutch person wants nothing more than for you to fire back and show what you're about. They will not be insulted if you dissagree with them. I think many dutch friendships start of as seemingly an argument, haha.

@@ihsahnakerfeldt9280 It's hard to know how much culture has to do with it. You are used to the open view but also a lot of people use curtains that block the view during the day but let light in. More so now than in the past I think. They want more privacy.

Als Nederlander ben ik groot fan van Vlaanderen en de Vlamingen! Ze hebben iets gemoedelijks over zich, iets rustgevends. Kan het niet goed uitleggen. Wat me de laatste tijd vooral ook opvalt is dat de bescheidenheid ook op Vlaamse tv enorm te zien is. Toen laatst in de media was dat de mol van dit seizoen van De Mol (dus de Vlaamse versie) was gestopt, merkte ik dat de Belgische media vooral bezig was met de gezondheidssituatie van de mol en dat de Nederlandse media er hysterisch op los ging en er voor m'n gevoel vooral veel publiciteit uit wilde halen. Grote bewondering voor hoe daarmee omgegaan is en hoe het in de media is gebracht!

Wij wonen letterlijk op de grens met België. De grootste wiet rokers zijn niet de Nederlanders hier kan ik je zeggen. Maar het verschil tussen de Vlamingen en de Brabantse Nederlanders is er nauwelijks. We zijn echt buren en tamelijk verzot op elkaar.

Well there are much more German speakers than Dutch speakers and Easy German is how easy languagess started off so I doubt this would ever happen.

very interesting how different they are. what the people said about the history is probably a major reason. Belgium never really had a very strong sense of unity compared to the Dutch, and Belgians were strongly under French influence for so many centuries. dank u wel voor de video! 💙

Prachtig om dit te kijken als Nederlander in Vlaanderen! Ikzelf ben nogal vaak bang voor vooroordelen vanuit de Vlamingen maar het valt in de video goed mee :) Ik had eigenlijk al mijn hoop gevestigd op de nieuwe generatie om onze twee landen nader tot elkaar te brengen, maar met die twee jongedames in de video heb ik de hoop alweer opgegeven.. haha!

Unfortunately, there are still too many people who base their opinions on what they have heard from others rather than their own experience. In addition, you cannot really judge the Dutch. There is an enormous diversity and it also depends on which region the Dutchman comes from. There is a lot of difference in this.

@@imwinningthisone7613 I mean I don't think anyone in the Netherlands would mind ceding Southern Limburg and Zeeuws Vlaanderen to Belgium lol. Their dialects are also more similar to the Flemish dialects. Don't touch Brabant though!

Beetje vaag verhaal inderdaad maar volgens mij kwam het er uiteindelijk meer op neer dat ze Nederland en Belgie hetzelfde vond, niet alle Nederlandse steden (hoewel ze dat wel letterlijk zei) . Als in, de bussen zijn daar hetzelfde als hier. Maar goed het zijn praktisch kinderen die 3 keer naar Sluis zijn geweest dus laten we het allemaal niet te serieus nemen he

Hele moeie aflevering :). Ik vind het echt fijn dat de videos in het vlaams zijn, want je komt het toch niet zo vaak tegen dan het "gewoone" nederlands. Ik kijk al uit naar nieuwe content. Groeten uit Duitsland

Tip: 'dan' en 'als' lijken op het Duits maar worden compleet verschillend gebruikt. 'Besser als' is 'beter dan'. En het Duitse 'als' is bij ons meestal 'toen'. 'Dann' betekent vaak hetzelfde als 'dan', maar in dit geval weer net niet. Het kan nogal verwarrend zijn: DE: Ich bin größer *als* du. NL: Ik ben groter *dan* jij. DE: Ich bin genauso groß *wie* du. NL: Ik ben even groot *als* jij. Bij het Duitse 'als' wordt het nog verwarrender, omdat het vaak iets totaal anders betekent: DE: *Als* ich ein Kind war (EN: When I was a child). NL: *Als* ik een kind was (EN: If I were a child). Goed bezig verder! Je komt niet vaak Duitsers tegen die Nederlands willen leren. Andersom doen veel Nederlanders (en ik denk ook Vlamingen) er jaren over jullie naamvallen onder de knie te krijgen en van onze strenge (en misschien iets 'kinderlijke') zinsbouw af te stappen en de veel grotere flexibiliteit die het Duits biedt te ontdekken.

Ja het klopt soms is het best wel verwarrend tussen de twee talen en ik ben nog stets niet zeker waneer ik 'als' en 'dan' moet gebruiken, maar dat zal wel lukken met ietsje meer oevenen denk ik. Duits is ook helemaal de moeite waard, gewoon oevenen en als jij een foutje met de naamvallen maakt, is het niet helemaal erg, dat doen zelfs sommige duitsers die ik ken ^^

@@MoViesDProductions Dit is ook mooglijk praten "denn" (~ ndl "den") voor "als", maar det is een beetje archaisch: "mehr denn je"- "more than ever", "besser spät denn nie"- "better late than never"... Ik vind det zeer interessant, hoe soms het Nederlands zoo archaisch zijn compaard med Duits, maar generaalt veel verder ontwikkeld (in historie taal, hoe grammatik, anglizisms...) Ik hoop dat dit je kan helpen, sorry voor mijn slecht Nederlands, ik heb het nooit niet geleernd ond verzook dit nu, een beetje lere met deze videos. Ook heb ik vriende een Belgie ond Nederlands, dit zond voor mij super lender, maar alltijd een beetje zonderbar. Groetje uit Polen van een Duitse.🙃

Hee :-) Ik ben hier per ongeluk terechtgekomen, maar ik ben Nederlands (uit Nederland ;-)). Ik maak geen video's, maar voel je vrij om een keer een berichtje of vraag te sturen. Liked the video a lot. As a Dutch guy living in Belgium, I hear Flemish always say that the Dutch are so nationalistic and unionist. But, as someone not coming from the west or south in The Netherlands, I would definitely say that's not really true. Yes, we like to party. Yes Koningsdag is fun cause usually its a day off, in the sun, partying with EVERYONE. There are no groups or people not joining. But that is more what people like, than actually thinking the nation is great. Cause I don't see that really; proud of the country is something nobody in the NL would ever say (although they might think it). If I would say I am from Friesland to someone in Groningen, and that we are both the same, they would seriously be offended. Same in Limburg or other provinces. And Holland usually thinks everything outside of Holland is not part of the country. So I really don't think Dutch people are that nationalistic or proud or even unionist. It's more like those things became tradition and are fun to do. For our view on Belgium, for me, I always pictured Flemish. Belgium is basically Flemish. I would almost forget there are also French speakers or German speakers. We rarely hear of them in the Dutch news.

I lived for 9 years as a foreign national in Amsterdam, but worked in Eindhoven and Nijmegen as well. I would agree that all parts of the Netherlands are not the same - far from it. And I cannot say that I ever saw a great deal of nationalism there, except when there were international football matches being played!

@@Astonyshing I fully get what you're saying, but I do feel that even then, we are excited. We want to win. The whole country turns orange. But I would still not really calling that proud or nationalist. It's more about a sort of unity or having fun together. Something that binds all of us. Usually the atmosphere is quite nice and open towards the opponent or other countries. Not a case of: we are the best nation on earth and therefore, we need to win. But I could definitely see how someone could qualify it as nationalist.

I don't think it is coming from anywhere.. I am from Rotterdam and I traveled a lot throughout the world and I am proud to be a Dutchie but I am annoyed by the society in the Netherlands.. I think we just use koningsdag as an excuse to get drunk and party.. I am not celebrating my king and my country I am in fact having fun with friends :)

Well, but don't forget that us Belgians are divided by the languages and parts in our country. So basically any country that has some kind of unity under one language like the Dutch have, is nationalistic for us hahah.

I indeed wouldn't say we're nationalistic, unless somebody touches our history and condemns or tries to change it ("what do you mean we can't call our golden age 'the Dutch golden age' anymore? Stop nagging!"). About Holland, as a Hollander myself I'd say that's pure jokes. There is a west-and-the-rest-mentality, but from the west on out I would say it's not necessarily a negative view. I do get why "the rest" finds it annoying when foreigners as well as Dutch people call the Netherlands "Holland". Het zuiden, oosten en noorden zijn er ook nog!

Ik ken het gevoel. Tegenwoordig woon ik in Noord-Holland en een deel van de observaties van de Belgen over Nederlanders (lees: Hollanders) herken ik helemaal. Ik vind ze nog verbazingwekkend positief.

Ik probeer nederlands te leren omdat ga ik elke jaar in west vlaanderen in vakantie. Ik hou van westhoek maar het is echt moelijk hem te verstaan. Sorry als mijn nederlands is een beetje slecht maar probeer ik zonder google vertaler 😅 Dankjewel voor de videos

Maybe you're from north Germany? I don't think a Bavarian would understand so easily? I have heard that people who speak northern plattdeutsch understand Dutch very well. I speak Hochdeutsch and I find I can understand written Dutch quite well, but the accent is difficult. Also in, for example Amsterdam, they tend to speak very quickly, which also doesn't help.

@Kurocoon Yes - that's interesting, thanks. When I was a child, I used to be able to speak some Hessisch (mit meine Oma!), but now just Hochdeutsch. As I said, I can understand some Dutch, but the accent is difficult for me, understanding and speaking.

@@rodjones117 I am around B1 in Dutch and I also had a lot of problems with the flemish dialect especially when I wasn't looking at the subtitles. On the other hand, it is also that especially Germans overestimate their ability to understand Dutch. Most of them get maybe 20% of a sentence, understand eventually the overall message but act like they understood everything perfectly.

More interesting is the difference between Vlaanderen and Wallonie. Last time I (NL) had a French speaking university student as a lift to France. She couldn't say any word in Dutch, did not know a Flemish artist, and did not know that 'Luik' stands for 'Liège'. In my opinion the differences between Vlaanderen and Wallonie are greater than between Vlaanderen and The Netherlands.

@@captaindonut5240 neen, we zijn geen Nederlanders. Sinds 1581 zijn België en Nederland gescheiden (buiten de periode van 1815-1830). Hoewel er in Vlaanderen een gemeenschappelijke taal is zijn er zeer veel verschillen.

Natuurlijk. Een Limburger praat duidelijk anders dan een Hollander. Een Limburger en Brabander viert carnaval, in Friesland vinden ze schaatsen fantastisch. Mensen aan de grenzen spreken hetzelfde of een gelijkaardig dialect. De eetcultuur kent naast overeenkomsten ook verschillen. Net zoals in Vlaanderen het geval is. Maar sommige Nederlanders denken dat alle Vlamingen zoals Samson spreken. Of alle Vlamingen spreken Antwerps. Hoewel er in Vlaanderen constructies en woorden zijn die in heel Vlaanderen voorkomen zijn er evenzeer ook veel verschillen. En hoewel Franse woorden meer in Vlaanderen voorkomen gebruikt het Maastrichts bijvoorbeeld meer Franse woorden dan ik in mijn Limburgs dialect. Tussen Nederland en Vlaanderen zijn er verschillen, en er zijn overeenkomsten. Verschillen en overeenkomsten zijn er uiteraard ook binnen Nederland en binnen Vlaanderen. En zelfs binnen provincies en regio's. Zoals Lange Frans en Baas B zouden zeggen: "Kom uit het land waar je doorheen rijdt in 3 uurtjes , met een ander dialect elke 10 minuutjes"..

Dat Vlamingen Nederlanders meer open vinden en zichzelf meer gesloten heeft een diepe historische achtergrond. Nederland is lang een klein vrij land geweest omringd door grotere machten. Dan moet je snel en efficient praten om dingen sneller en beter te doen om een kleine voorsprong te houden. België is heel lang bezet geweest, door Frankrijk, Spanje, Oostenrijk en NL. Als je bezet bent, moet je oppassen met wat je zegt en wordt je dus meer gesloten. Dat werkt tot nu toe door.

De "doorkijkwoning" is eigenlijk een doorzonwoning. Dit type woning heeft niets met het calvinisme te maken maar is ontworpen om zo lang mogelijk profijt te hebben van zonlicht. Nederlanders houden van zonlicht in huis.

Ik dacht eigenlijk dat ik Nederlands kan verstaan, maar het viel me wel moeilijk met het Vlaams omdat ze soms enkele woorden opkroppen. De taal-/cultuursituatie lijkt een beetje op de betrekking tussen het Zwitserse Duits en het Duits van Duitsland en de verschillende culturen (daar het “grote” Duitsland/hier het kleine Zwitserland). Wat heel erg leeft in Nederland is de Vlaamse alternatieve muziek scene. Bands als Balthazar, intergalactic lovers en Triggerfinger bijvoorbeeld zijn enorm populair in Nederland. Tourist Lemc ook, en in de jaren 90 dEus. De indie scene in België is wel wat creatiever als ik Nederland naar mijn mening .

Ik was eens met vakantie met een gemengde groep mensen. Toen er een mevrouw naar mij toe kwam en zei vroeg : U bent toch alleen, hè. Dat was ik. Zij moest voor haar man vragen of ik bij hen aan tafel wilde zitten. Dat wilde ik wel. Haar man vertelde dat hij in het kabinet zat van een bekende minister, al heel lang. Wat hij vond was dat het Nederlands zoveel mooie uitdrukkingen had, Bijv.: In Vlaanderen alles schoon: een schoon kleedje In het Nederlands was het mooi, leuk, prachtig en nog meer. Het was een heel gezellige reis . Dat vonden zij ook.

Het blijft leuk steeds maar weer subtiele verschilletjes te vinden tussen het Vlaams en het NL-Nederlands. Op 0:20 zeg je 'curieus, nieuwsgierig' te zijn. In Nederland gebruiken we beide woorden ook, maar zijn het geen synoniemen van elkaar. Nieuwsgierig betekent hetzelfde, maar in 99 procent van de gevallen betekent 'curieus' meer iets als raar, opmerkelijk, merkwaardig--zoals "curious" in het Engels ook die betekenis kan hebben (zie bijvoorbeeld het bekende boek van Mark Haddon). Dus zeggen dat je 'heel curieus' bent zal in Nederland wat rare blikken trekken. Jullie werkwoordvolgorde ('Ik denk dat ze moeten verzorgd worden' i.p.v. 'Ik denk dat ze verzorgd moeten worden') die in informeel gebruik vaak opduikt en het zinnetje 'Bedankt om te komen' i.p.v. 'Bedankt voor het komen' zijn ook altijd dingen elke keer weer heel erg raar klinken voor mijn Hollandse oren. Maar leuk en interessant is het altijd.

Ha, as a dutch ive been confronted by the wierdness of open windows a lot, so often that i in turned thought it was wierd for people to be that aware of it because for me thats just how it is. Now at least i have an explanation for it next time someone asks. Allow me to inform my polish girlfriend who also expressed how wierd it is for her.

Ik mag mijzelf oprecht een kaaskop noemen, want: geboren in Alkmaar. (Mensen die daar geboren zijn worden Kaaskoppen genoemd.) Ik denk enigszins wat te weten over België, ik ben in elk geval in Brussel (een beetje Parijs en Amsterdam gemengd, waar men het vertikt om Nederlands te spreken), Antwerpen (leuk, maar daar is ook alles mee gezegd), Brugge (toch een beetje een Efteling-gevoel; wanneer komt Roodkapje uit één van die huisjes?), en Gent (dát is echt een stad die elke Nederlander zou moeten hebben gezien; geweldig!) geweest. Ik ken de systemen qua politiek, en kijk graag Vlaamse series; op de NPO of op Één/Canvas. Maar wat Vlamingen zich niet realiseren, is dat er wel degelijk verschil is binnen NL. Zo zijn de vier Randstad-provincies (Noord-Holland, Zuid-Holland, Flevoland en Utrecht over het algemeen ‘brutaler’, omdat zij de economische motor zijn van NL. Die vier provincies hebben bijna de helft van de bijna 18 miljoen mensen binnen hun grenzen wonen. De drie noordelijke provincies, Groningen, Friesland en Drenthe, staan in het westen bekend als stug. Noord-Brabant en Limburg worden juist weer gezien als (te) Bourgondisch. En Zeeland… Tja, die bestaat ook. Daarnaast heb je ook in NL een bijbelgordel lopen, die zich uitstrekt van Zeeland tot Friesland. Volgens mij dat Noord-Holland en Limburg de enige provincies zijn waar de (soms streng) orthodoxe ChristenUnie en SGP geen voet aan de grond weten te krijgen. En als laatste: Vlamingen lijken ook vergeten te zijn dat NL nooit groot had kunnen worden zonder hen. Want het zijn vaak gevluchte Vlamingen, of afstammelingen, geweest die in NL tot ontdekkingen kwamen. Daar mogen wij, Vlamingen en Nederlanders, toch maar trots op zijn! Dus verschillende rassen? Eerder tweelingbroertjes. Niet identieke tweelingbroertjes, maar toch: tweeling. 🤗🤗🤗

Leuk. Als een Nederlander die in Zwitserland woont (ook een meer indirecte cultuur, net als Belgie ) bezie ik mijn eigen landje ook weer met een andere bril. Heel herkenbaar. Nederlanders zijn direkt, wat soms grof kan overkomen. En dan die gierigheid he. Een hele leuke mop vind ik " Weet u wie het koperdraad heeft uitgevonden ? Twee Nederlanders die vochten om een cent! " . En dan de caravan, daar komen wij als Nederlanders nooit vanaf. Een van de eerste dingen die mijn eerste Zwitserse chef vroeg is hoe het is om met een caravan te rijden. Hij ging er vanzelfsprekend vanuit dat ik als Nederlander ook met zo'n sleurhut op pad ga. Geweldig. Belgie ken ik eigenlijk te weinig moet ik eerlijk zeggen. Je kunt er geweldig eten en de Belgen geven denk ik in het algemeen meer om kwaliteit dan de Nederlander. Mensen zijn mooi gekleed en geven graag geld uit aan mooie produkten. Ik heb in ieder geval weer zin gekregen om Vlaanderen te bezoeken, daar hoor je toch het mooiste Nederlands. In Zwitserland heb je trouwens net als in Belgie ook de taalgrensen en de onderlinge competitie die je ook tussen Wallonie en Vlaanderen vindt. Maar ik heb het idee, zo van een afstand, dat het er in Zwitserland wat vriendelijker aan toe gaat. Er zijn in ieder geval geen politieke bewegingen die een scheiding willen tussen Swiss Romandie en het Duitstalige gedeelte.

I guess you can compare Flanders and the Netherlands to the USA and Canada, USA and the Netherlands are more open, more straightforward. Belgium and Canada are always considered very friendly people, a bit shy too. Or you can compare them economically wise to Finland and Estonia I guess.

@@sbrugman297 Zo heb ik het nog nooit gebruikt horen worden. In mijn regio wordt alleen 'nieuwsgierig' gebruikt in deze context. Curieus zou je hier meer vertalen als 'peculiar'. Bijvoorbeeld: - Hij maakte een curieuze val - Het interview met Thierry Baudet was op z'n minst curieus te noemen Kan wel zijn dat hier regionale verschillen tussen zitten

The difference in mentality is a lot due to the way Belgium has been governed in the past. It has been top-down for centuries, like the Catholic church and the oppressing rulers far away. Whereas the Netherlands were on their own, doing what they thought was right ... going out over the globe, trading and being opportunistic in a way. Belgians had to cope with getting away often secretly from what was laid upon them, making them silently acting. Nowadays, being both democratic, open and safe countries, mentalities shifting towards each other and learning to enjoy the good things from one another, and of course sometimes getting annoyed by having different habits as well. I think differences in personalities still matter more than difference in culture. My interests can be very different than my neighbors’ but the same as someone who lives in another country.

The girl who said that all Dutch people are the same clearly hasn't spent a lot of time in the Netherlands because there are a lot of different cultures, traditions, languages, dialects, etc. there in almost every province. Most of this is based on generalizations.

@@thibaultd7979 In the Netherlands you have different languages and regional languages too, and you have a bigger distiction between the protestant and catholic part. Belgium is mostly catholic.

@@thibaultd7979 No, Fries is a language, and then you have several dialects and regional languages like Limburgish, which they also speak in Belgium and in some parts of Germany. There are a lot of differences between the South and the North of the Netherlands just like there are significant differences between the North and the West. That is why what the girl in the video said, really doesn't make a lot of sense.

Je merkt wel dat het in Brugge is opgenomen, het idee wat men daar van ons Nederlanders heeft is heel gericht op zoals de jonge dames al zeggen regio Sluis (zeeland). Ik denk dat je heel andere antwoorden gaat krijgen als je dezelfde vragen in steden als Antwerpen, Turnhout of Hasselt gaat stellen omdat er in Nederland ook veel regionale verschillen zijn in de mensen.

Het maakt nogal uit waar in Nederland of Vlaanderen iemand woont denk ik. Er zit nogal een verschil tussen iemand uit Amsterdam of een dorpje uit Groningen (zoals ik). Dat zal in Vlaanderen ook wel zo zijn denk ik, een verschil in mentaliteit tussen een stad als Antwerpen of een dorp op het platteland van West-Vlaanderen

I live in Limburg (in the south between Germany and Belgium) and I think we are more connected to people in Vlaanderen/Flanders personality wise than the rest of the Netherlands lol. I think we have more in common with these people than people in the other Dutch provences do.

Wat meteen als Nederland opvalt is dat wat ze zeggen zo goed overdacht wordt voordat ze het eruit knallen. Dat is het grootste verschil. Vroeger was er een programma op tv. Een kennis quiz tussen Nederlandse en Belgische kinderen. De Belgen wonnen bijna alle feiten vragen, de Nederlanders echter bijna alle probleem oplossende vragen. Verschil van onderwijs.

Ik mis het multi-culti gedeelte in Nederland. Zeker in de grote steden. Ik denk dat ''wij Nederlanders'' meer open staan voor verschillende culturen en levensstijlen, vergeleken met België. Daarnaast vinden wij onze ''vrijheid van meningsuiting'' erg belangrijk. Om dat nu meteen arrogant te noemen..ik weet persoonlijk liever waar ik aan toe ben doordat de ander direct is. Ik kan niet zo goed omgaan met bescheiden gedrag. Maar bescheiden zijn is ook gewoon een karaktereigenschap, die Nederlanders ook kunnen hebben.

Dat multi-culti is juist walgelijk. Zeker als het gaat om moslims die juist niet willen dat wij als Nederlanders onze vrijheid van meningsuiting mogen gebruiken wanneer we praten over hun geloof, dan worden ze heel boos en dat zie je natuurlijk in gevallen als Pim Fortuyn en Theo van Gogh die dan worden doodgemaakt voor hun meningen. Het is veel beter om gewoon één sterke Nederlandse cultuur te hebben in plaats van een ophoping van allerlei culturen bij elkaar die juist vaak averechts staan op de ander. We moeten juist aanmoedigen dat er één Nederlandse cultuur is. Dat is nu moeilijk omdat het al zo lang verzwakt wordt door veel te tolerant te zijn voor mensen die juist intolerant zijn naar ons toe.

In Vlaanderen heeft de tijd veertig jaar stilgestaan, men is er conservatief en braaf. Iedereen doet mee aan het toneelstuk om "op" restaurant te gaan en een kuisvrouw te hebben. Er zijn zoveel lagen en departementen dat het ook onmogelijk is om vernieuwend te zijn en om iets te ontwikkelen. Amai, oei...!

Als iemand die in de Verenigde Staten woont maar Afrikaans en een beetje Nederlands spreekt, was ik verrast hoe verschillend Vlaams was. De snelheid en cadans van spraak maakten het moeilijk te verstaan. Misschien is het het lokale Antwerpse dialect?

@@SaturatedCat de oude Walen spreken ook nog vaak Waals, dat is zelfs niet te vergelijken met Frans, ikzelf ken veel Walen tegenwoordig die wel Vlaams spreken. Beter dan de jonge garde hier Frans spreekt want dat niveau is echt erbarmelijk geworden.

Can you form an opinion about The Netherlands when your only experience limits itself to Sluis or even Cadzand for that matter? Although we have more or less the same language, both territories don't share a common history, except for some 15 years. It is indeed true that the Dutch are sometimes more direct than the Flemish. This was due to the fact that Flanders was for hundreds of years the poorer part of Belgium and the Flemish independent spirit was oppressed by the French-speaking elites who were playing cow-tow with the rich industrialist and civil servants in Brussels. Once the industrial southern part of Belgium lost its significance the Flemish spirit revived and I am glad to see that the youngsters find common grounds again i.e. there is much more interaction.

If you are referring to the fact that (only) a part of Holland, Zeeland and Flanders belonged to the the Burgundy Duchy that does not imply that we have a common/joint history eventhough the languages are similar. From say 1568 until 1815 there was no common history at all and thereafter just for 15 years until 1830. I still think 1830 was a mistake because our joint nations would have been a tremendous "power" in Europe. The Catholic church palyed a very dubious role in all of this. I once asked a Flemish older couple what the relation was between Belgium and their King. They looked at me in amazement and could not answer that question.

@@profiler4772 - We had a common history from before year 0 till 1648 after which Flanders remained under the Habsburg rule. It’s the protestants who played a dubious rule by dividing us in Catholic and heritic parts. So Catholic Flanders escaping protestant oppression had to decide to stay with the Austrian Habsburgs and Dutch Brabant and Limburg became ‘wingewest’ , exploitation provinces for 200 years to punish them for remaining Catholic.

@@louisdewit4429 Louis, ik zou nog even goed kijken naar die geschiedenis van voor 1648 dan zul je merken dat hele grote delen van Nederland geen enkele connectie hadden met Vlaanderen. Zelf gedurende de Bourgondische tijd maakte alleen Zeeland daar deel van uit. Economisch gezien waren de veel grotere Vlaamse steden meer gericht op handel met Engeland (laken productie) terwijl de Nederlandse provincies en steden zich op het Baltische gebied (Hanzesteden) richten. Ik vind jouw opmerking over Protestanten die het Chr. geloof verdeelden in Katholieken en ongelovigen heel opmerkelijk. Bedoel je te zeggen dat de Potestanten zichzelf als ongelovigen zagen? Mag ik je er op wijzen dat het verzet tegen de gang van zaken in de katholieke kerk (o.a. de verkoop van "aflaten") over hele delen van Europa verspreid was, zelfs voor Luther. Enig idee hoeveel mensen de Katholieke kerk als ketter heeft verbrand? Mag ik je er ook op wijzen dat de bloei van de stad Amsterdam te danken was aan de vele kooplieden (ook katholieken en Joden) die uit Antwerpen waren gevlucht tgv de Spaanse (lees katholieke) Furie. Je moet de geschiednis niet naar eigen hand willen zetten beste vriend
