To help you answer your questions, we examined 1,001 linked LinkedIn resumes of people who are currently working as data scientists to see where exactly they come from and what skills they’re using in their day-to-day activities.
The main messages we extracted from our study both last and this year, is that if you have the skill base that makes a data scientist, you can be a data scientist. It will be interesting to see how the data science profession changes in the next 2-5 years, but right now, a universal data scientist profile appears to be taking shape: a unique programming language toolbox desired across industries and locations, preferably a Master’s degree, or a Bachelor’s, proof of practical abilities and a confident learning-on-the-go attitude are the currencies of the field.

Data science is more mathematics (probabilities and statistics) than anything else. Remember that data science was there way before computers with powerful cpu and gpu. I liked the way that this video put emphasis on artifical intelligence skills for data analysis right at the beginning of the video. I think that being able to know how to use AI for a datanalysis would be mandatory in the next few years. I've heard that to be able to program AI, you'll need a solid knowledge of Maths ... I’m really sorry to chime in but honestly I can dumb this down, basically anyone can do it. It’s all programming and having the softer skills to explain the models that you create. either using python, R or SQL (I know there is Golang in there upcoming thanks to Gota etc)or some combination. This should be combined with some understanding of the technical landscape of the client. Honestly it shouldn’t take you more than a year give or take if you put the minimum amount of dedication into it. I’m looking forward to the future developments in this field!

Its depends on the specifics - the field is large and you can be a SE who works on the Database (Data scientists of some sort) or you can be the guy who does machine learning and/or there is much more in between. If you want to go into machine learning or so, be ready to have Calc, LA, Numerics, DC, Statistics, etc. One year isn't even enough to get through the basics.

Unfortunately it really depends on the university, where I was the data science program.wasnt that good, the name was a bit missleading too, the Artificial Intelligence course was much better and prepared me much better to the job as a data scientist As for online courses, that depends a lot on you, I personally benefitted a lot by actually doing a university course compare to an online one, I was feeling more motivated, and the group projects and many classes that the university offered were very good. But if you don't think you need group projects, not the motivation that comes from having a structured university course, you can easily learn the same skills for much cheaper on a online course. You might just get a bit less recognition on your CV for that, but you can compensate by showing off your skills I suppose

I'm a middle aged mom who has been out of the conventional work force for more than twelve years. I've just started teaching myself data science and I'm confident that anyone who is passionate about learning and solving problems, and who is willing to work hard can become a data scientist. Your background in IT is helpful because most data scientists need good coding skills (for interacting with APIs, scraping data, cleaning data, automating tasks, using different data science libraries, etc). More important than your coding skills are skills for getting intelligence out of data (eg. statistics, ML algorithms, data visualization, etc) and domain knowledge (depends, of course, on the kind of work you want to do.😊) Best wishes to you. Forty is the new twenty. (At least that's how I feel about it. 😁)

Not that I really know but I'm pretty sure they're completely different levels. We have data analyst where I work and they start off at 44k salary. They pretty much just pull information and compile reports for the VPs. So I would think a data scientist is way more deeper into the information and are coming up with solutions to the problems with that data and probably start at 90k or above lol.

Data science is overrated and too much hyped. It's like the days everyone wanted to become a pilot. Look at this field now. There are too many pilots. Not only most of them are unexperienced but also most are not needed. Don't become a data scientist because it sounds cool or because it is going to be highly asked. Do it because you want it. Do it because it really is the thing you want to do and you are sure you can provide high quality work. The competition will rise, therefore the requirements for a job and the skill set of a data scientist will rise too. Ask yourself the question if it's really the thing you want to do. In every corner someone talks about data science, don't distract yourself from this. It is your life and your path which you choose.

@@thomiadalbert900 your comment is completely unnessiary. People like you have been complaining that the tech sector will become saturated for years. Since the 90s in fact. Men like you sitting in their offices, complaining rather than offering their skills to help the next generation become better. I have encountered many of you in my career. At the heart of your supposed 'warnings' is fear. Fear that someone will find you out and show you something you've never seen. Who are you to determine what will happen if many more people decided to become data scientists. You should be encouraging as many as possible to enter the field. There will be good data scientists as much as bad ones. Just as one has bad carpenters there are good carpenters. Don't complain on KZfaq comments....

It's a good intro to the world of ML and the degree (along with a portfolio) is what I'm leaning on to overcome not having a deep mathematical background.

Having a degree isn't at all necessary to learn the material and do the work, but in my experience a lot of people who do the hiring don't understand that. They assume it's too complicated to learn outside of traditional academia. Though I imagine that depends on the industry, my experience is mostly with more traditional companies that are looking to learn how to use their data. Startups and tech companies might be easier to get in if you can demonstrate your skills.
