What does a $4000 motion design look like?
This is a case study of a “typical” motion design job. What kind of work are freelancers getting paid for in 2023? And how do they get it done?
I’m not presenting this as an outstanding example of motion design genius. Far from it. But that’s partly the point.
In this video I talk about some of the challenges of working direct to client, and give you tips for creating similar projects. I also talk about what you might consider when you’re quoting for a job.

Thank you for the breakdown. It can be hard not to compare yourself to amazing explainers/product videos you see from studios and reshared by individuals without forgetting that they are usually created by entire teams and not just one person. To see what you charge vs your experience and what you ultimately produce really gives me piece of mind and some relief that I am following my own "rates" fairly and not under or over selling myself.

love these videos, love the info you present. I do kinda wish there were fewer shots from movies/media. While super cool, they're used so much, I'm kinda struggling to focus on the point of the video; aka what you're saying about the motion design. Eyes and ears disconnect kinda thing. I still like it a lot though, just need to focus extra hard.

Just discovered your channel. GREAT stuff. I've been using AE for 25 years, so at this point, my main joy in tutorials is seeing other people's workflow. I love your long-form channel as well (but I wish there was audio with it.) Anyway, what I'd really love to see is a fully-detailed, fully-nerdy video breaking down how you have your After Effects set up, especially all the plug-ins you use as well as your interface layout and custom shortcuts. Plus maybe how you integrate other Adobe products directly into the workflow. I see a million tutorial videos where someone will explain how a tool works, but it's always an entirely different thing when you are just doing a project and troubleshooting and doing endless microscopic tweaks. It's then that all the great workflow tweaks and shortcut keys and plugins show their worth.

Thanks for the comment and I also share your love of seeing people's workflows. Actually generally a lot more than just the end result! I don't know how interesting my particular set up is, as I'm not a massive user of plugins and scripts, but I'll consider it for the future. As for audio on long form channel I might do some with audio in future, but that's what this main channel is for. Thanks again

@TheVideoShopLondon 8 ай бұрын
Hey, I'm not an industry rockstar AT ALL, and I know of freelancers my standard charging more. There's a lot of underpricing which goes on which is exactly why I made this. It's not about screwing clients over either, the opposite. You build trust with them but also trust in your own abilities and what you're providing them. Simply not letting a client down seems obvious, but lots of them have and will appreciate finding someone who cares. Is that you? I bet it is!

Fantastic in-depth look at this project. Thank you so much for showing your entire process. I love how much you emphasize the Being A Producer part, vs. Creating the Animation. I'm a decent mograph animator, but my primary skillset is client relations. It boggles my mind how many freelancers treat their clients as "the enemy." The best and most successful freelancers I know all treat their clients as human beings and part of the process. This makes them desirable, and it's often why they get return clients again and again, not to mention referrals to other clients as well.
@TheVideoShopLondon
@TheVideoShopLondon 9 ай бұрын
I would only dare call myself a "decent" animator as well. That's what a lot of less experienced motion designers don't seem to know - that client relations is HUGELY underrated as a skill in the industry. I guess because it's far less sexy than striving to be a mograph rockstar
@escheur
@escheur 9 ай бұрын
@@TheVideoShopLondon You're not wrong. I wonder if the client relations part comes with the experience of doing the job for longer, or if it comes from a different passion entirely. Most of the motion work out there isn't super flashy or stylized-- but a lot of animators who get into motion graphics do so because they want to make innovative "WOW!" graphics. If that's where your passion lies, you might struggle to find jobs that you find fulfilling-- there's a lot of competition for very few spots. But if your passion is about communication and interacting with people (I consider myself in that category), then the animation almost takes a secondary role. That's probably unpalatable to people who care deeply about the animation side of things. (Of course I'm generalizing, so take this all with a grain of salt, yeah?)
@TheVideoShopLondon
@TheVideoShopLondon 8 ай бұрын
I think client relations is partly due to having good people skills generally, but can also be learned along the way (sometimes the hard way!). But I'm surprised that I still see behaviour from professsional working motion designers where I think "are you actively trying to REPEL clients"?!?

Hey! 2 things. First, I've discovered your channel recently and I'm really liking it, it's SUPER useful, and out of the box imho. Second, I'm curious if you've ever tried using illustrator to design the frames of every shot and then moving them into AE with Overlord plugin. I've always worked like that and feel like it's super efficient. Unluckily I'm lacking the asking questions stage and super under-estimate the time a project will take. But super curious if you've tried that and came back to designing the shots in AE. Keep it up, this channel is SUPER cool!!

1. Thank. Really glad it's useful. 2. I've used Overlord for importing supplied illustrator files / storyboards. I just tend to design and create in After Effects simply because I work quicker that way. It's unusual though, admittedly

As someone who has frequently collaborated with both competitively-priced animators/creators and highly experienced, high-cost professionals, I've found it worthwhile to opt for the experienced ones, if it fits the budget. Not everyone justifies their high rates, there are quite a few who quote X rate and delivery dogsh*t. It's either in-house for me or hiring actual pros when it's external - not those whose expertise extends no further than following a KZfaq tutorial. @videoshop definitely ranks among the experienced professionals.
@TheVideoShopLondon
@TheVideoShopLondon 8 ай бұрын
As someone who learned "pay cheap, pay twice" the hard way with house renovation I bend over backwards to try to justify a high rate. It's harder to sell that to new clients as they don't know you, but after that like you say, it's the price of peace of mind. But as I say in the video I don't have a fixed rate. Depends on a lot of factors.

Valid opinion. Highlighting things you wish you had more time to finesse isn't the same as running down the whole animation though. Also, the point of the video is actually more about client relations than slick output. Building trust with a client is worth more to some than them searching for needles in haystacks

He was the graphic designer, animator, producer, creative and art director. Essentially an ad agency within one person. This isn't freelance work it is ad agency work. 4k for this output is great considering if the client went to an ad agency it would have costed more. I'm sure with all the back and forth with emails and revisions, the time to complete this from start to finish was about 2 weeks of this person's time, energy and emotion. The price is more than fair. The quality is up there.
