Sad seeing how we’ve been so demoralised people are ashamed to call themselves British. You get the odd situation where foreigners admire, want to emulate british culture and be gentlemen but the natives are ashamed.

Its because we're taught all about the bad things that happened in British history, taught to feel shame for things not even our grandparents were alive to see. Very rarely were we taught about the great things Britain has done in school. Not just in school, but you go on the internet (which this, the previous, and next generations have grown up with) and there is a lot of people saying that our heroes and our leaders are as bad as Hitler (I wish I was joking about that). Our accomplishments and inventions are always said to be that of another country, our mistakes are as bad as the holocaust (again, I've seen people saying this). The jokes we're used to, we make fun of ourselves and our own country more than anyone, and they're fine. But there is a hard line between making a joke about our accents and language, and just outright disrespecting our history and culture and heroes. And unfortunately, we're being taught to be disgusted by our history and culture, to be disgusted by and scoff at our accomplishments. There are certainly elements of our culture and history that we are taught to emulate, taught to admire. But there are very rare to find as the months and years go by.

The empire is not over - it's only that Britain chooses not to lead it anymore. I am Australian - while a recent prime minister John Howard tried to convince Australians that our strongest links should be with the United States (I never could work out why - the only thing that comes to mind is that he wanted the United States to rescue us if we got invaded?) Australia received all of the following things from the United Kingdom - Westminster parliamentary system (a brilliant system which trains oppositions for government in their asking of questions and also refines government through that process - of course people can screw up any system if they are self-seeking), separation of church and state, innocent until proven guilty, national education, national health. These THINGS have made countries around the world prosperous - although only when people didn't consider these things capable of 'saving' us. It's the opposite - we can destroy each one of these things. But that leads to my final point - it was - as the presenter points out - the Judeo Christian foundations of Britain that led to each of these wonderful expressions of healthy social life - and now Britain - in its blindness fueled by selfishness and arrogance - has decided that it would instead prefer to be 'cut flowers'. So then - I return to my first point - the relationships between Britain and its colonies exist. The colonies certainly have some grasp of what was given to them (although like Britain in the first world there has been a turning away from God - leading to a devaluing of these things). If Britain wants to continue to lead the world - if it is willing to pay the price for a reward which is more in the age to come than in this life - it will again return to being the great nation it has been - and should be. The US, and UK, and Australia (and other colonies) - while far from perfect - were DEFINITELY NOT built by selfishness - they were bult by service. And only service will see them resemble what previous generations ensured that they became.

I'm Welsh. The fact that I live on the British isles is just an accident of birth. I see the term 'British' only meaning something to someone who wants to spread the blame, starting with the statement: We're all British when... Usually it's English people claiming that too, making us English by proxy, which is what they really mean when they use the term British. I help my neighbours because they are neighbours and people first, not because of some vague 'We're British' statement. British has such a small meaning these days, irrelevant to almost everything.

The Philippines is a poor country that had an artificial identity. borne out of a short history. Yet, overwhelmingly call themselves Filipino, but never forgetting they are part of a hundreds of ethnic groups. If these "not-British" people are incapable of seeing themselves more than their ethno-linguistic identities than what poorer countries could do in terms of national identity despite ethno-linguistic differences, then you're no better than a prehistoric tribe. Such people always cry for a modern state, yet when given one, they now let out tribalistic tendencies.

I don't think him having one opinion that's a bit cringe doesn't nullify his wider efforts. His appearance in the documentary on blackface in British media was incredibly eye-opening and a neccessary watch if you wish to understand the insidious nature of the practice.

Wrong. A Brit is a person of any nationality born in any of the countries making up the British Isles. An English person is born of English parents and descendents which can be traced back through time.

It's no problem for the royals to have a funeral here so why not them if they try to call it home at least let them . Let the man sing people busk and go to concerts , I don't appreciate the forgiveness for there aprehesiveness to integrate into society without bending over for the capitalists . What was slavery for did it help integrate society or segregate us and defy our unity , :/

I'm so glad we are increasingly becoming none religious. 2021 census: “No religion” was the second most common response, increasing by 12.0 percentage points to 37.2% (22.2 million) from 25.2% (14.1 million) in 2011. Education, fossil record and most importantly plate tectonics. We will rule (and be sensible with no stupid religious wars).
