I appreciate that you did this five years ago but as a Doctor Who fan and several other kind of science fiction things and so on, I’ve always been completely confused every time I see a KZfaq video and they are arguing over to what is Canon and there’s not so I just want to say thank you because I am confused no more! 🤗🤗🤗

It doesn't explain a lot. All it explains is a made-up definition of Canon for the anime or fanfiction community and he is saying how the actual definition is close enough to it but in reality he is using a made-up definition.

You dedicate your time to reading and loving them, then some guy comes along and says, "Oh yeah, those things? They no longer technically count, so yeah....." I know you loved the expanded universe Adam (as you said in a previous video), what did you think when this statement came out?

It's SUCH an overused term, omg. We grew up just calling things "official" , "lore" , and the obviously non official "fan fiction." The fact the term Canon, a phrase meaning "demonstratively true," is used to differentiate one fiction from another fiction just shows how obscure and obsessive fan culture can be lol.

I’ve been arguing with my friend that an ip can have multiple canons at this point because of how much content is coming out there are multiple stories and timelines or iterations of a story so like marvel comics has its canon but the MCU would also have its own canon. Same IP but multiple canons. Thoughts on this?

I don't think canon is official, necessarily. I can buy the ownership of a work of art, but that doesn't mean I'm able to be the arbitrator of what the genuine intentions of the author was. No amount of money can do that, which is why no one refer to Disney or the Tolkien estate as the final arbitrator of the respective works. They always refer to the thoughts of Lukas and Tolkien.

So CFYOW(Can't fear your own world) from Bleach is canon? The creator cannot write because of sickness so he become a co-author and has someone to write for him who incorporates creators idea in novel. Even the writter is different it: Has recognize by creator. Supervision of creator(creator's idea, concepts, lore, etc.) The designs and art for novel is created by author. Has a legit translation released already. Continuation of Manga of creator. The wikia says its not canon because: "Some filler characters in anime is mentioned in novel". Even the novel didn't directly acknowledge the event of the filler, only the character. "Inconsistency in power scaling" When did anime become consistent with powerscaling especially if interference of plot armor? "Doesn't directly written by creator" I guess all anime aren't canon because creators aren't the one who animate that. I guess Boruto isn't canon to naruto because it has different author.

Not necessarily. Let's assume you have a somewhat controversial questions and you want to know what's canon in the Lord of the Rings. Do you look up the opinions of the modern Tolkien Estate, who officially own the IP, or examime further genuine writings by the late J.R.R.Tolkien, the author? It can be official, but doesn't have to be.

@@IsabelleAmelia he used two different analogues. The interpretation by others (church) versus the author's intentions (Shakespeare). If you want to know to know what is canonical in the Lord of the Rings, everyone refer to the author's intent by reading auxiliary writings E.g. letters, other books, interviews of Tolkien. No one ask the modern Tolkien Estate. In the example of Star Wars Legend, canon is supposedly decided by Disney's interpretation. They've bought the IP, but they use the word to mean official. No one thinks Disney, a huge profit based company, is genuine. If people want to know what's genuinely Star Wars, they listen to George Lukas. This video is not the best definition.

Canon isn’t typically used to refer to real life events. It’s usually about fictional worlds, where there may be things that are not canon. So canon are the fictional pieces (books, movies, etc) that are considered the truth of that world. So again, not real things.
