It’s only an upside down world if you spend all day online and the internet is your reality, meaning it’s your only view of the real world. In your day to day life it’s not that bad, the only real threat you face on a day to day basis is inflation

Likeable? I find her to be pretty insufferable personally. Her overly meek demeanor and whisper quiet voice drives me up the wall. It’s like, get a fucking personality! And if you actually pay close attention to her videos, she’s nauseatingly pretentious in her attitude towards food. Although she does try/make a wide variety of foods, she practically brags about never having previously tried many ubiquitous foods, usually of the junk/fast food variety, as if she’s a member of royalty marveling with incredulous amusement at all of lower class foods that all the mere peasants eat. She’s one of those obnoxious snobs who more often than not describes desserts as being “too sweet” or has some other pretentious critique about most of the things she tries. 🙄

FYI, 99% of soy sauce is made with wheat and probably a majority of it is wheat. Soy-only soy sauce is hard to find and often called tamari (while it is a sauce made with soy is supposed to have different ingredients and a different process).

It is in real soy sauce, it gets lost when it's distilled to make the clear salt water.

Considering myself somewhat of a soy sauce afficionado, having one i haven't come across surprises me big time. I mean i even get into conversations about the finer points of regional variants of soy sauce. Right now Lee Kum Kee sweet soy sauce being my favorite for both cooking and marinades. Emmy, I don’t know if you’ll see this but here’s a tip to getting a controlled pour of soy sauce from one of those Kikkoman bottles: plug the end of the bottle you are not pouring from with your index finger and tilt the bottle, when you’re ready to pour the soy sauce either over your food or into a soy sauce dish release that finger to help the flow stop/go easily.

They have a Maruichi location in Princeton New Jersey and I was just there yesterday! I think they only have three or four locations in the U.S and they're probably owned by the same people. It's right across the street from the university. I go there whenever I visit Princeton, as often as I can since I live close by. They don't have a lot of stuff and they don't have huge lines like you said the Rhode Island location does. Are they near Brown University? I was under the impression, for some reason, that all the locations are near Ivy League universities. I thought I read that on their website, but I don't remember. I had assumed that was because they figured there'd be more of a demand for Japanese food in those areas. Believe it or not, there are actually two Japanese stores within a block of each other in Princeton. The other is more of a convenience store, called Haru grab and go. I don't know if they're owned by the same people. Lately, I've taken to going to Haru instead, because they have more different things besides sushi and their prices are very cheap, especially for the quality of items they have. I like their Kani salad.

There's a small Japanese market in West Hartford CT also called Maruichi and I'm wondering if it's related to the one in Providence. I always go there if I'm craving senbei or some of the more 'interesting' Japanese potato chips.

Could you compare both with tamari? As someone with a gluten intolerance, I cannot do regular soy sauce because someone thought they needed to add wheat to soy sauce. Love your videos!

Try coconut aminos - same salty flavor, no gluten, health food stores tend to sell it. Kikkoman also makes a gluten free soy sauce - look for the green label.

La Choy brand is gluten free you might try that it doesn't give me any issues but everyone's different so be cautious of course

Saltwater is distilled to produce fresh water. If you distill soya sauce, you would have to add salt back. Rose petals are distilled to produce a rose scented extract. I would expect soy sauce distillate to contain at least some of the flavors and smells of the soya sauce.

Im so jealous! I am vegetarian but I LOVE fish... i dont care about meat or whatever but fish and seafood just hit the right spot. I haven't eaten real sushi in 3 years but i cam recall the taste like it's been yesterday. Would like to try sushi with clear soysauce!

My understanding of soy sauce is that the lighter and the cooking soy sauces are mainly to add saltiness to dishes rather than adding flavor, unlike the darker or dipping soy sauces.

I'd have guessed it would taste like sea water, given that's the only other really salty solution I can think of that people consume (but in dry, crystalline form, of course!), and on that thought, I've occasionally thought of making a saturated sea salt solution spray for condiment purposes, but, I never get round to doing so... :P

Yes definitely start with salmon. Tuna is also a good first try. Get a poke bowl but go very basic with it like a salmon avocado or salmon cucumber

I've had to replace soy sauce with coconut aminos. Due to managing gout, most soy sauce Brands I use to use contain yeast extract which triggers gout flare ups for me. These days I just eat maki rolls with wasabi and no soy sauce.

I grew shiso in my garden one year. No one liked it and it took over the whole bed. Super easy to grow, wish it had been a fit.

I wrote to Kikoman years ago requesting a clear soy sauce. They said they made a clear soy sauce but was not available to the public. They were thinking about making it available.
