News of Miss World returning to India has rekindled memories of the competition's tumultuous history in the country, when in 1996, violent protests were fuelled over a fear that encompassed both western cultural imperialism as well as threats to the dignity of Indian women.
Members of an Indian feminist group threatened to commit mass suicide. Both right-wing politicians and left-wing student groups raised their voices together in opposition. Thousands of police were sent to Bengaluru to guard the pageant, which, due to safety concerns, relocated its swimsuit competition to Seychelles. One pageant protester died from self-immolation.
More than two decades since the chaos of the Miss World competition, what does hosting the contest mean for India today?
Indian beauty queens have long used pageants to build bigger careers in Bollywood and abroad. And more competitions are promoting ideas of female empowerment, freedom and leadership. But critics see the concept of a televised contest pitting women against each other based on narrow standards of beauty, evening gowns, and an interview question as a relic rooted in patriarchy.

Womens rights are important They are more than half the population. Beauty pageants are encouraging women's freedom of choice in what they wear. Eg in the UK women can be nikabis or on a hot day they can be comfortable not sweating under too many clothes. Its their right to choose important thing is that most people don't mind what they wear.

I understand that pageants have had some positive impact, in the same way everything does, and especially in the early days. Still, to me these are just a relic of shamelessly sexist times. They just don’t belong in these times anymore, but probably that can also be said of many things in the beauty industry.

This is probably one of those rare issues where most conservative Hindus would concur with Al jazeera and Islamic conservatives. Western corporations (in this case, the ones the likes of Lakme) usually buy out a couple of influential people (in any society, for that matter) and these people then act as social reformers and influencers when actually all they care for is their dollars. Moreover, for many women, this becomes a way to be recognized, admired, and so this cycle continues. The fair skin obsession is also partly related to this.

I see your point it would be better to have a woman as a top solicitor or Doctor than in a beauty pageant but to be a champion of popping out babies is sad. We don't want to go back those days where a woman's only place is in the kitchen. Today's women have a husband for that and it's far better for the man to have an active role in his child's life than to miss out on those years.

As always, maybe I can explain in another way from seeing and experienceing in my family in the 80s and 90s, here in America up front. My niece with the urging of mother, both mother and daughter really beautiful engaged in beauty pageants. My niece won two pageants, one and seventeen and another at 20. I got to see the behind scenes with my own eyes those that ran these pageants, big money. The girls often were not friends and men came back behind the scenes were they were dressings. My niece was given a trip on a yaught to the Philippines and I got her home immediately, she was offered jewelry by men on those yaughts. I got jer a plane ticket home. Now in Russia, more confusion. I dont care if it is Miss World, Miss whatever country, Miss USA, Ms.Teen whatsoever, I know how much those gowns, swimsuits, makeup cost, etc. Now each woman can make their own choices, but for my niece who began hating them for her journeys in them. It traumatized her. She grew bulimic and got drugs, alcohol and died. One thing I will always remember what she said," I wished I never entered a beauty pageant in my life when she was older. She died at 40 and weighed 96 pounds. 5'9 inches and 118 pounds at her best beauty in those pageants. Remember these beauty pageants started here in America. I just believe more efforts should be placed in helping the needed, the poor, not from a platform for beauty, it starts with the love on the inside exending outwardly. Many world problems are happening in our world such as wars and people and families are running in many nations in fear and deaths. Furthermore, if certain women have the desire for beauty pageants and business, it is their freedom to do so. I do not judge. I may say to them, I agree to disagree respectfully.
