Can someone *please* link to an unbiased source on this issue? People are saying it's either the end of the Internet as we know it or the best thing ever and I can't find anyone who is in the middle. I want to know if I should be okay with this or not but I am not going to trust the sources that are like this.

ICANN is essentially why you get censored and shadow banned from social media platforms. America gave away control to a foreign company that doesn't have to allow free speech.
@BungieStudios3 жыл бұрын
@@Paige-Turnner Social media services and their company culture are why you get shadowbanned and censored. The people running those sites do no believe in freedom of speech. That's why alternative sites are growing and old sites are going the way of MySpace. That's not on ICANN.

I find it funny how people on these comments here are all whining about ICANN being a monopoly, etc Of course, now when they realize just how fucking important it is, and that it shouldn't be given away by the government (Thus making American laws notwithstanding over the internet, allowing for the Chinese or Saudi Arabia to be able to hold the ability to censor materials that would otherwise by american law not be able to be as such. While right now, authoritarianistic companies like as such are allowed to act. new competitors will still be allowed to form, which will prove to replace them. list of major companies that hold Authoritarian style rules: google (who just made a rule that allowed them to remove monetization on basically any video they see fit), Twitter (shadow banning people who don't conform to their ideology) Facebook (outright banning people/groups who don't conform to their ideology)

Can someone explain me why they are so much hateful comment ?
@quinson937 жыл бұрын
kais ben rhouma, only corporations are allowed contracts for domain name registration, and besides a few government DNS the internet is in the hands of a organization without a competitor. Usually in government contract (USA), companies can bid (provide evidence) they could do the job better. This is international, so it's a monopoly.
@quinson937 жыл бұрын
The only thing that was given away was US oversight. The US still owns the root file, since it's a physical location. And ICANN is still the main contractor for the US. ICANN now makes deals with the rest of the world through their "international stockholders" as mentioned in the video. As for China and Russia, while as exciting as that sounds, there's no reason ICANN would give up its wealth and power to another country after being set free, and no evidence I've seen to support this claim.

I thought monopolies were illegal. Forcing a fee for a domain name on top of the fees that the provider provides is ridiculous. ICANN is the same as those "Housing Communities" that just take money and provide nothing while supposedly providing a service. On top of that, the internet was developed in the US, why is this video made with a French accent? Too bad I didn't think of this scheme first, I could be rich by now.
@5shujin-sama4478 жыл бұрын
+Matthew Marino Well it is kind of wrong to think that the US developed the internet. At the same time that the US developed the ARPANET, France developed the Cyclades. And today's internet inherit from legacy of both systems. (+ some others) So stop hating on France on every occasion you have, the only thing you prove is your ignorance.

+5shujin-sama I agree. Without France, we wouldn't have French Fries. Or French Bread. We should lay off of France. Without them, we would be without the ability to French kiss. Which is kinda disgustipating... yuck...
@5shujin-sama4477 жыл бұрын
Mock if you want but modern internet would not work without the distributed network principle or packet switching technology. The first "american internet" was simply connections of clients to mainframes with very basic protocols.

I may be wrong, but I think it's a Swedish accent. I speak French and don't sound like that, and the CEO of ICANN is Swedish. I also believe the man who is credited for inventing the World Wide Web, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, is from England.
