We had our first son earlier this year. After 5 and a half months inpatient in the NICU and PEDS floor, his insurance claims were $2.3 Million... but thank God with insurance from my work we only paid $3,000. Insurance claims are still going outpatient...with medical supply claims and specialist visits.. he should be around $2.5 million in claims now. Little guy is 6 and a half months old and going strong.

If you have a remaining balance after insurance, you can go into the billing department of the hospital and have them give you an additional 50% discount if you pay in cash right then. We have done this with each of our kids and it has saved us a few thousand dollars.

$4500 cash with local midwife. Every single item, crib, clothes, etc was bought second hand except carseat. I used cloth diapers (bought used) with my first 2 and have switched to costco diapers. We need to stop the rhetoric that babies are too expensive or not worth it. Humans are worth it despite any costs. ❤

In my area, there are yard sales on friday and saturday mornings. Baby items galore! Obviously some stuff you still buy from the store, but it’s for sure a money saver. And if you get to a sale towards the end of the day, some folks will say “just take it!”

@@maryellenmusser3531 unfortunately, not everyone is as blessed as you were/are. I did cloth diapers, but there is a cost of the actual diapers, then the detergent, water and electricity to run the washer/dryer to clean them. I nursed both my sons, but my youngest had a congenital heart defect along with a disability, and it literally took all of his energy to feed for one minute, then he'd fall asleep. I worked with a lactation specialist using her knowledge. After several days of just trying to get anything in him while he was in the NICU, it was apparent he needed to be bottle fed. Also, I had a toddler, a husband and a home to take care of, so I couldn't devote every minute to just trying to keep my son awake to feed. Yes, I pumped every two hours. Guess what? I only produced about an ounce from each side every time I pumped (very discouraging , believe me, but the same thing occurred with my oldest, as well). Obviously not enough to sustain a baby, so I had to put pride aside and supplement with formula (which was extremely costly). Again, praise God you were blessed with different circumstances.❤️🙏

Free in Australia through our wonderful public hospitals, midwife appointments , ultrasounds or obstetricians depending if complications or a caesarean. Yep our taxes pay for this. You can go private and there are private hospitals. Post baby expenses are huge variance from getting stuff free from relatives or market place. Maternity leave from 6 weeks before the birth and up to a year, companies pay for the leave or there is government payments

I've had 2 babies in the last two years. The first baby was under $1000 on my last employer's awesome healthcare plan; this year I'm on a high-deductible plan and it's been around $5k (including me and the baby), which was all out of our HSA. But in terms of baby STUFF, we barely spend anything. Every single toy we have is a hand-me-down, and our oldest mostly just plays with kitchen stuff anyways 🤣 All clothes are hand-me-downs or bought secondhand for a few dollars. They both sleep in $60 pack n plays (which you can get cheaper used). Diapers and formula for the younger baby run us about $300 a month, but that's about it (and could be cheaper--we buy a very expensive formula). Our biggest expense was the carseats (both around $180, but we reuse them) and the double stroller ($400, ugh!). All in, we probably spend $400 a month on our kids, and we could easily spend less if we needed to.

Had one last year, cost me about $12k. Having another this year and it’s about the same. This is just medical costs and doctor visits. Insurance took care of the rest and I am on a high deductible plan too. A baby shower did help otherwise it would have been another $5k or so. This doesn’t include any formula, diapers, or other small stuff.

I’m Canadian so the majority of prenatal care is covered other than prenatal vitamins and other prescription medicine (about 80% was covered under our work health insurance). The pre-baby expenses were less than $2000 as we got a crib, dresser, gliding chair, and many other items second hand or as gifts. We got our infant car seat as a gift from parents and the convertible car seat second hand from a friend. Our main expense was a stroller. And I budget $200 per month for expenses - $75 for clothes and $125 for diapers, wipes, and food/formula. It will be even less expensive to have our second child as we don’t need to purchase anything except for perhaps clothes before they are born.

I’m Australian. I flew to Hawaii for a holiday with my pregnant wife, where she started to bleed one evening and we had to go to emergency. 23hrs of observation at the hospital and 1 ultrasound later, the bill came in at ~USD$21,000. Fortunately the baby was fine. Also fortunate that we were covered by travel insurance, which I got for free when I booked, and paid $0 for that little overnight stay. Contrast that with his delivery back home in Australia, with our private insurance (~USD$300/mo for family of 4): my boy was delivered in a private hospital, by c-section, and my wife had a week long stay in a private room to recover. It cost only the private health insurance excess, which was ~USD$400. You guys (USA) are good at some thing for sure, but affordable healthcare isn’t one of them 😂 Now daycare, that’s another story. My mortgage represents only 34% of my daycare fees (~USD$20,000/yr for 2 kids). And that’s after a 50% government rebate… but the French, they have a great system where childcare for kids 3 and up is free.

omg, what you have to pay to HAVE A BABY? That's crazy. Usually, tax pays for human rights like this. Having a baby is natural. Especially, a country wants to encourage women to have children. Imagine your cost depending on uncontrollable factors such as unexpected complications. that's so awful. I understand people spend a small sum to get supplies for the baby, but the delivery...i mean thats a double slap. In sweden, its free. 200+ days paid maternity and paternity leave. I pay same tax as I did in Australia. its a good deal.

I've come to realize that the key to amassing wealth lies in making sound investments. I purchased my first home at the age of 21 for $87,000 and sold it for $197,000. My second home, acquired for $170,000, was later sold for $320,000, and my third property, purchased at $300,000, fetched $589,000, with buyers covering all closing costs and expenses. Not reaching a million before retirement feels like an unfulfilled goal.-

The gross part is how bad the high deductible premiums are (small company, so plan selections are just bad)...they apparently forgot it was a high deductible plan and the monthly premiums are higher than the family plans from much better employer plans I've had in the past. Also $300 more a month than our mortgage! Insanity
