About 60 million people around the globe have been forced to leave their homes to escape war, violence and persecution. The majority have become Internally Displaced Persons, meaning they fled their homes but are still in their own countries. Others, referred to as refugees, sought shelter outside their own country. But what does that term really mean? Benedetta Berti and Evelien Borgman explain.

I’m a refugee from South Sudan 🇸🇸. My mum was pregnant with me and was running from the war in Sudan. I don’t know how she survived. We live in a refugee camp in Uganda 🇺🇬 (where I was born) for many years. We now live in New Zealand 🇳🇿. We’ve been here for almost 10 years and are afraid to go back home due to war, though my mum has been back for funerals.

:c Humans are cruel. I found out my great grandfather was a refugee, who fled alone from the civil war in china as a young child. They gunned down those that did not return and attempted to enter after refusing them entry. He was one of the lucky ones who successfully made it. I can't imagine what it's like to be alone, witness such horrors as a young child, and still find the strength and desire to survive, but I think that refugees have been through enough and do not need anymore suffering after their escape.

The video was promoting greater refugee intakes for western countries with a haughty fake neutral language. It's a extremely biased and completely ignores the permanent demographic destruction of western countries by low cognitive ability dissident cultures and religion. It completely ignores the problems such as Islamist inspired terror. So I don't like refugees because they are all ultimately destructive. There is no such thing as integration only displacement of Europeans. I want non, zero. If you think I'm harsh just remember a young European taking his girl friend to Brussels railway station may see her face ripped of by a nail bomb planted by an immigrant or son of an immigrant. No thank you. I can't go into a European capital city that looks more like Africa than Europe. Even the Japanese tourists complain of it.

pretty well? better than being an egoistic ******* **** country. do you like americas refugee policy more? taking those, whose work they need? doesn´t seem to work either - just look at orlando. the only thing that kinda works it to try to eliminate all the war in the world. the less war, the less people will flee their country. gets kinda difficult if the thing some people believe in tells these people to kill everyone that doesn´t agree with them.

My grandfather and his family were lucky to escape Cuba when they did. Each kid left at 15 and had to care for themselves, living on their own for 16 years. They had to rebuild their lives from scratch, going from the top 10% of Cubans to the slums. They worked as hard as they did back home and my grandfather is an anesthesiologist. He could retire, but refuses do his grandkids will have fully paid college tuition. He doesn't want us to go through what he did. He is my hero.

This video touches me deeply. My boyfriend is at refugee from Vietnam. He tells me stories of his earliest memories of his family leaving his birthplace in Veitnam and being transported to America. When he camr to the states he was suffering malnutrition (which effects his body today), changing his name and being disconnected from his culture and language when moving here. We as humans need to have empathy and compassion for refugees. Imagine being forced from the place you grew up and being placed into a culture that isnt your own? especially being displaced in a country that is in war with our own country....

My fear is that I have seen little change in attitude towards this issue, and even less widely accessible information (of the statistic kind) to help people make if not right, but informed decisions on the topic. This is a humanitarian crisis, and we can't just leave it as a vague debate. I hope this video goes viral.

In response to the Refugee Crisis in Syria, I once heard someone claim that "if someone offered you a grape, and you knew that, out of that whole bunch, one of them was poisoned, it would make sense not to eat the grapes." See, the problem with that statement is that you're justifying human cruelty by turning living, breathing people into grapes, something you can throw away without consequence or remorse. So how about this, much more realistic analogy instead? Let's say someone offered you a bunch of grapes, and, out of a bunch numbering in the hundreds of thousands, one of them was poisoned. But let's say that for every grape you eat that isn't poisoned, someone else gets to live. Someone else gets to escape a life of poverty, disease, and destitution. A family man. A wife. A child. Someone you've never met, and someone who you may never meet, but who needs you at this moment more than anyone else probably ever will to eat a single grape. Would it still be reasonable to refuse? Perhaps. But what ticks me off is a person who does that and claims that they're trying to make their country "Great" again. No. Just no. You cannot make a nation 'great' on the basis of cowardice. As an American, my nation has been accused of many things, but the one thing I thought we'd never allow ourselves to be thought of is a nation of cowards, hiding behind border walls and our own, delusional sense of isolationist exclusionism. What happened to us? We happened to the home of the brave? How did the huddled masses yearning to breathe free become our enemies?

Sorry to hear that ! But let's consider these: We (in the west) are privileged to eat three times a day. U have to realize that they have been through a lot. Most of them didn't grew up well. Their parents didn't get to kiss their child on the cheek and say 'goodbye baby'. Everyday is a struggle for them. Most kids grow up seeing their parents go through that everyday. If young boys are committing crimes then they are criminals not only Refugees does that ! They see life through different perspective. It's always about survival !

God forbid you ever see or hear the story of an actual refugee or the conditions they flee from and camps they live in. You say you just want "facts" then want it have been done with stick figures? That isn't factual, you might as well ask for it to be done with fluffy sock puppets. You want facts? There is a refugee at a hospital right now. She walks with an eight year old broken hip from a multiple rape attack. She is raising two children, trying to learn english, and walks everyone in agony. And she does that in a country that wants to see her banned, hates her religion, and has the audacity to complain that a video might be evocative. You compassionless piece of garbage you.

This hurts so bad. Just imagine loosing everything you have, your home, your relatives, the feeling of being home ... This is awful, we must not forget that it could happen to anyone and that refugees were living just like us before something shattered their lives apart. There is no one that we should help more than them, and I really wish I could see more refugees in my country, they're always welcome.

+Orangie It seems that you need to work on you definition of "propaganda." Like I said, this is an educational video, meant to spark discussion in classrooms; it's not leaning in any political direction, it's just explaining the definition of "refugee", giving teachers the chance to ask their students about their opinion on the current events in Europe. Just because a video doesn't share your point of view doesn't automatically make it propaganda. A left wing person saying it is the Western world's duty to accept refugees because of what the committed in the past is propaganda. A right wing person saying that Western culture is superior to Islamic culture, and that the refugees are plotting to destroy Europe is propaganda.

He only bought his wife and 4 children, some food and water, with no transportation or identity. Although when they reach the hometown, there is nothing for them to rely on or start a new busniess, they still live well, and have future generation. Just respect and treat other well.

Very recently a syrian guy in Germany told me his story, how he was taken and tortured by syrian police forces for being on the street with a friend and two other people, released with the order to enlist in assads army, and fight for the hated dictator who surpressed his family for years fled through turkey, where they were basically told to f*** of, spent much of their families money to get on a boat to greece, which capsized in the mediteranean and nearly drowned his friend. Overcrowded camps in Greece, where he had to sleep in the open as they didn't even have enough tents, walking nearly one thousand miles through all those hate filled states, that basically just hand refugees up to hungary, where they weren't allowed to move further, still having to sleep in the open, and finally put into a train by police, through Austria into Germany... ...And then there are a**holes in Germany who have never known pain, hunger, or having to sleep in the open, whose biggest drama in life is probably the death of the family dog and who have nothing better to do than shout at him to go home, and that he is unwelcome, and that all refugees should "traditionally" be gassed, while he is walking to his German school... My faith in humanity has finally vanished this year...

im sorry, i know your comment is very old, but please do not of think of anti-refugee right wingers as some kind of entitled assholes. Their arguements are very well-founded, and have to do with how the economics & politics of it works out. First of all, the european countries which are taking in migrants, have no basic plans to resettle these people back into their home countries after the wars over there are over, and are attempting to integrate them in the larger foreign society, which btw, wont be possible and will only help to imbalance the ethnic & religious balance of the nation, thus paving way for ultranationalistic movements at worst, and uneducated populists at best. 2nd arguement, and the most logical one, is that upto 90% of the people who are illegally crossing borders are working age males, and only about 7% of them are from syria, and 5% from iraq. 4% from somalia. 5% from libya. all 4 warzones. where are the rest of the so called war refugees coming from? let me see, 10% are from afghanisation, 15% from pakistan, and many many from other african nations which have no relation to war, but only want to leave their country due to poverty, instead of helping the country grow. again. working class age males, where are the families, where are the children.

😕😟😟 Im trapped inbetween, I have a small safe zone Ive lost every important thing in and out of my life. No home, cannot be with wife and child despite our relationship into marriage of 10 years. Cannot get to the small biological family i have of my own mother and/or sister. Its isolation at its worst. Very near to my breaking point as my wife has to deal with people that shes around *"Where is your husband?"* people would ask my wife. *"Your husband must've abandoned you."* people would assume and say to my wife. *Despite* Me and my wife having amazing love for another, as our child is A representation of our love. However our marriage had a long history, with many difficult challenges and making a home. Which we successfully had done. The worst if this, is my wife and half of my life has been in another nation, 12,100km from birthplace *(opposite side of where One is from)* And now, just myself. Eating and walking to a certain point. But I've been unsuccessful returning home to my wife ~and~ returning to a family's home. neither I am unable to do. Because of politics of a few. And I'm supposed to just quiletly accept that without reason?
