Debt recovery specialists at Singapore Debt Collection Service really want people to know that they are not loan sharks; they are just mediators working out a compromise between creditors who want their money back, and debtors who don’t have enough.
How do debt collectors recover money owed? Comedian Rishi Budhrani becomes a debt recovery specialist and discovers that it is a tough job for tough guys.
Rishi is put through the paces and learns where the line is between legal debt recovery and illegal collection. He is given a case to handle on his own, and quickly has to figure out how to track down the debtor and negotiate payment.
Eventually, Rishi heads out to confront

Only if all debt collectors are as nice and law abiding as this company.... Thumbs up to this company. Better than some company that bring a banner and purposely shame the debtors. Respect to all good debt collectors who are polite and follow the law.

But in reality, as the debtor you can be stuck in a situation where you're not financially stable or even able to get the money back readily to repay your creditor. And from the creditor side, it is very easy to get upset and ignorant cos you just want your money back and you're tired of handling your debtors in person but not easy to stop and realize that doing so isn't helping the situation.

Couldnt this be an easy way out for some debtors? for example, a debtor could agree to a loan with a bank on an unfavourable contract/ repayment date, then just refuse to pay, when the sdcs shows up, ask and agree for a more favourable repayment plan. obviously this is only hypothetical but it seems like a potential loophole

It looks like SDCS has a winning formula and acts as that middle man between those that owe & those that are owed. The key things I learned were be professional & prepared, be well mannered & respectful, but above all resolved the matter as best you can.

Do some (or should I say ‘many’) debt collection agencies - especially working for overseas clients who are not familiar with Spore laws & customs - actually give the debtor a ‘discount’ and then tell the client the debtor has gone into bankruptcy? That way, the collection agency has actually bilked their clueless overseas client while pocketing the ‘discounted’ payment from the debtor. So instead of helping their overseas client, they have in fact ‘pakat’ with the debtor with a reduced payment. I’ve heard of a case like that but I’m not sure how common it is.

Bankruptcy means no loans, bad credit rating (which affects your job proposition) You cannot leave the country without the OA/PTIB’s permission. You cannot hold public office. You cannot be a company director without the approval of the OA. You cannot Sue any party in court (except for personal injury or matrimonial proceedings) without the OA’s/PTIB’s approval. Your Bankruptcy will be entered into Singapore’s bankruptcy register, which anyone can freely search. You can continue to work, but not in high positions (basically you screw over your career prospects) Your Credit score will be affected

Police usually cannot deal with these cases because of a lot of legal barriers. A lot of these debts are owed between private entities and the correct legal action usually is to take them to court. Police don't act as debt collectors. If you get a court summon and don't show up then police can act.

What makes you think the police has the jurisdiction to settle legal contracts between private entities?? Did you call the police down when you make the contract that if they don't pay they will be jailed by the police? If the police not involved in the contract why would they enforce it for you? You want the police to go their house and harrass them? This isn't that difficult to understand. The police is there to enforce public law, not your personal loan.
