The nutrition aspect is fascinating. I didn't realize you could absorb that many calories/hour. I've always struggled with nutrition and calorie/electrolyte intake. Also, your insight into caffeine has been a game-changer for me. Awesome info.

What kinds of tools do you guys take with you for mechanicals? Is your race over if something happens? Are you carrying chain tools, tubes, chain links, co2, hexes, etc? Seems like my tools weigh a LOT but you didn't mention any of that. You elite riders are something to behold as I watched the lead group lap me in the Lumberjack when I wasn't even halfway yet. Ya'll KILLING IT! Unreal! I need to ask for a picture or something next time but kind of in awe.

I cary a tire plug, CO2 and multitool. If I have to put a tube in the race is probably over as far as getting on the podium especially at lumberjack. Definitely come say high at the next one.

Very helpful info for a 55 year guy with a fair bit of mtb racing and some experience doing 200km brevets. Getting back into shape after 3 years with no time to ride, and now training for a 6 hour mtb event in 6 weeks. I'll be looking into gel choices. Never tried them .

🤟. Nice to hear your nutrition strategy. Considering I am new this year to marathon races I am in trial and error mode. Ate too much first race. Stomach did not like that. Narrowed it down to 250 calories an hour alternating water and electrolytes every other hour. Nice tips!

Congrats on the win! Have you ever struggled with muscle cramps on these longer mountian bike races? Seems like most mtb races over a couple hours I get them. I know there are a host of reasons that could contribute to them, just curious if you can shed some light (or make a video!) on the subject. You may have touched on my issue in this vid, going out too hard. Love the vids, keep them coming!

Thanks for the weekly videos. I find them really useful for my forthcoming races. One question. Do you make any changes to your seat angle, height, fore and afte so you fit in your aerobars AND can get the power down. How did you get used to them. Thanks! C
@DylanJohnsonCycling
@DylanJohnsonCycling 5 жыл бұрын
CHRIS CAMPBELL great questions. For a TT bike I would get fit in the aero position but for mtb or gravel I’d get the fit optimized for your normal position since that’s where you’ll be spending most of your time. I don’t adjust my saddle for the aero bars. You’ve got to practice in them to put out the same power. When I go on a mountain bike ride I ride to the trail head on the road and that’s an excellent time to use them.

Great video, thanks! I have a tire question: you said that for this race you ran an Aspen on front and Recon Race on the rear. I like both of these tires and use them often for xc races. But I tend to reverse it, running the Aspen on the rear and the RR on the front (my reason being that I think the Aspen is faster rolling while the RR has better grip, especially on the sides). But you know a lot more about this than I do, so set me straight, please! (Btw, if you did a video on tire selection - for racing, training, different conditions, etc. - I would definitely watch that).

Wouldn't downing the coke throw off your ph toward acidic? (or at least make your kidneys have to work harder to keep it balanced?) I know Coke is high on the acid side of the scale, same with Gatorade and other sports drinks.. Guess when it's all that's available, you have to take what you can get though for the sugar.
@DylanJohnsonCycling

Hi Dylan. Was wondering what your thoughts are for caffeine consumption during a ~15h road race. Would you suggest consuming caffeine throughout, or save it for what you would guess are the more critical moments of the race? Also do you know if there is any research on people who consume less caffeine in their everyday lives having a greater performance gain from it (or do people seem to plateau similarly even if a greater dose might be needed). Wondering if caffeine is worth using in B races or saving it to the A races (btw I don't drink coffee so don't get that much on an everyday basis). Keep up the good work, your videos are really well presented and structured. I imagine a lot of work goes it it making it this way.

@DylanJohnsonCycling
@DylanJohnsonCycling 5 жыл бұрын
Zone 2 is a pretty big range. With an FTP of 258 I'd keep it between 130 and 200 on z2 days. Towards the lower end if you want to recover more and towards the higher end if you want to work on your ability to sustain a high power output for hours like for an ultra endurance event. 150, 160 is a good midpoint for most of your z2 rides.

For me I like the fact that they are 4 sided and super easy to get in to, esp on uphill starts and other tricky bits. My knees also like the free float. Their only drawback is that you can get popped out of them if you pedal strike a rock or log. This is rare for me but does happen every once in a while.

Are the aero bars dangerous for other riders? Usually for even a fast group ride, no aero bars allowed, someone could get hit from behind and have an issue. Wondering mainly about the start of those races, there are a lot of people there. Not hating on the idea, it clearly is allowed and fine, just curious about the "what if" factor.
