What's it like to visit America for the first time? My husband and I left Japan to come to Detroit, Michigan where I was born. I haven't been back in over 3 years and he's never been to America, so there will be a lot of culture shock!

This is something that I've heard and I'd like to know if it's true or not seeing as how you attended a sporting event with enthusiastic cheering. Are sports fans in Japan far more reserved at sporting events in terms of being loud and celebrating a victory? Or is that just another myth?

As a Michigander, THANK YOU for showing Detroit in it's brightest light. Everyone associates Detroit with crime/danger, and I'm sure that keeps a lot of tourists away. It's really a fun town and state and you won't find a better orchard south of the Ohio border.

American hug-culture is pretty well-known in Japan; my in-laws had a mix of trepidation and excitement the first time I went over to Japan that I might just hug them immediately. Of course I knew Japanese culture so I didn't, but some part of me thinks they were kind of hoping I would. I think I did when we were leaving Japan on that trip, and have since then.

@@captain_britain Hahaha... my nieces will, but they're both 25 and under and I've known them since they were tiny. My sister-in-law won't initiate, but she will go with the flow. I don't really do bro-hugs with BiL and my wife's dad. Might be a bridge too far. They're cool, though. Dad always tries giving me strange unmarked alcohols at some point in the trip (he spent many years as a tour guide, so picked up lots of local liquors), and BiL is a good guy though he works a lot.😁

"Welcome to Detroit! You're running, why are you running?!" The transition between those two clips in the intro is the perfect way to describe what the typical person thinks when they hear Detroit 💀😂 I've had the opportunity to go to Detroit back in Spring Break 2019 for a robotics world championship and honestly had a blast! Hot dogs and pizza are two things Detroit does right. The crust of a Detroit-style pizza is absolutely perfect, especially a corner piece! Though I'm sure through this Detroit visit, Tommy's realizing he's been taking Japanese trains for granted when noticing how American cities are compared to Japanese ones. And love the fact even your father knows Japanese!

There's a story behind Detroit's Coney dogs (for those who don't know): Despite the name Coney dog being named after Coney Island in Brooklyn, NY, the Coney dog originates from the Midwest. But why? In the early 1900s, many Greeks came to the US through Ellis Island to escape the Balkan Wars. Before moving to the Midwest, they stopped at Coney Island and had Nathan's world-famous hot dogs. They were so impressed that they wanted to spread it wherever they went and came up with their own recipes. In Detroit, there's a tense rivalry between American Coney Island and Lafayette Coney Island right next door on which one has the better Coney dog. In fact, Lafayette Coney Island was actually founded by the BROTHER of the founder of American Coney Island! Like how Mister Donut became a thing because its founder Harry Winokur chose to no longer work with his brother-in-law, William Rosenberg the founder of Dunkin' Donuts.

We took them to their first Warriors game, Giants game, Sharks game, 49er game, their first In-n-Out Burger, first legit Mexican food, first legit BBQ in Santa Cruz, first jazz band concert in San Jose, and the obvious iconic tourist places to visit (Facebook, Google, Apple, Golden Gate, Ghirardelli). I can relate to the temperature adjustment. I grew up in the TX Gulf Coast. Temperatures rarely even got down to freezing, and when they did for those 1-2 times a year, it was just for a few hours. When my husband brought me to visit his family in Grand Rapids in Jan, I thought it was absurdly cold despite it only being in the upper 30's. His relatives laughed at me. For our next visit we were able to visit in summer, so we could go to the county fair. I thought temps in the upper 70's low 80's were paradise while those same relatives were suffering. I just looked up the high at home on my phone and they couldn't believe that our upper 90's low 100's was our normal.

Tommy's excitement of everything being new and different reminds of my numerous tours in Japan (77-78 Okinawa, 82-83, 83-84, 93, 95 and 96-2000 Iwakuni). I had a great time in Japan. I was lucky in that my hobby was long distance running and I had a Japanese friend who shared the same hobby. I and my other running (Marine) friends ran many Japanese running races. Good times. Hope to go back some day for a visit.

When we lived in Japan we would visit the USA every 2 years and OMG it was always scary first arriving because everything and everyone was bigger! But after a day of relaxing it would feel good again. Both the USA and Japan have such incredible cultures and places :) its hard to say which is better overall, but I really take the low crime in Japan as probably the best part.

@@OrientalPearl that's got to be hard not to visit at least once a year, but I bet it's way too expensive to visit every 6 months. I love Michigan I live in Chicago and I used to go skiing in Michigan at the smaller resorts. What most people don't realize is skiing in the Midwest is much colder and harder to tolerate them skiing and Colorado up in the mountains. That was when I was in my early twenties and now I am 72 LOL I still remember skiing like it was yesterday but of course with arthritis I can't do it I'm glad you enjoyed yourself and Tommy of course.

It's cool to hear you're from the Detroit area. I grew up in Royal Oak myself! It's awesome that your husband's first experience of America was Detroit, and his reactions to everything were so heartwarming. Bringing him to Michigan in the summertime should be an amazing experience, especially if you could bring him up north. Anywho, I just recently discovered your videos and I love your channel. I loved every minute of this video. Tommy's open mindedness, was incredible. He was so eager to explore everything and experience and soak in all of American and Michigan culture. I think he has fallen in love with the USA. Also, I remember that Coney Island diner was featured in an Anthony Bourdain cultural show several years back. It was pretty moving at the end when Tommy was flying back. I'd like to see him come back to the States very soon.

@@OrientalPearl Yes, it was from his Detroit episode from around 2013 or 2014. It was a really interesting episode. I think I have the right diner. There are probably a few Coney hot dog places there I'm sure. I think his show filmed at the Duly's diner which is like 90 years old.
