Hozier's Intention In an interview with the Star Tribune, Hozier explains that his song is an attack on anti-homosexuality in the church, especially the Catholic church: “I’m not condemning the church or religion on the whole, just that one policy [the anti-same sex marriage policy], which seems so wrong to me. And obviously I’m not alone in thinking that.” According to an interview with The Cut, the song is also about homophobia in general and state oppression of homosexuals in Russia. Hozier meant the song and the music video to attack policies that value rules and prejudice over love and acceptance. To make this point, "Take Me to Church's" music video shows a gay couple being hunted and tortured by a mob of masked and hooded men. Viewers, first, see the couple making out and, then, the mob torturing one of the men. In explaining the video in an interview with Fuse TV, Hozier says, "If you feel offended or disgusted by the image of two people kissing, if that's what it is, but you're more disgusted by that than the actual violence...I think you should take a look at your values, maybe." Through these images, Hozier wants to prove that being anti-gay is far worse than enjoying homosexual love. As an appropriate summary of his viewpoint, Hozier says in his interview with The Cut that "[t]he song is about asserting yourself and reclaiming your humanity through an act of love. Turning your back on the theoretical thing, something that's not tangible, and choosing to worship or love something that is tangible and real - something that can be experienced.”
@WildSorrel2 жыл бұрын
the music video is about that, but not the song. He is clearly talking about a woman in the song he specifies that he is singing about a woman multiple times. He is also a very autobiographical songwriter and writes mostly about himself, and he is not gay. This song can apply to being gay in the sense that he is rejecting the church's condemnation of sexual feelings.

Not just homosexuality but sexuality in general. The singer is male and his "lover" is female after all. But even in heterosexual relationships, the church only accepts sex within marriage. I'm interested to hear what people think the second verse. Here's what I think -all just guesses based on what I know about the general topic of the song: "If I'm a pagan of the good times My lover's the sunlight" The "good times" and "sunlight" refer to sex and he metaphorically worships them like a pagan. Perhaps the part about sunlight also relates to pagans worshiping the sun (although, according to google, pagans worshiping the sun is a myth.) "To keep the Goddess on my side She demands a sacrifice Drain the whole sea Get something shiny" The "goddess" represents the church, or the biblical god. In order to follow the church, people must "sacrifice" their sexuality. By "draining the whole sea" they are sacrificing major parts of their human nature, and in return they get "something shiny"- something nice that isn't really worth it, like a feeling of fitting in at church or the belief in eternity in heaven (hopefully, although there may be a lingering thought that they might end up in hell.) "Something meaty for the main course That's a fine looking high horse" A play on the phrase "get off your high horse", claiming that some religious people look down at or judge others. "What you got in the stable? We've a lot of starving faithful That looks tasty That looks plenty This is hungry work" Continues on from the last line, claims a lot of the faithful are "starving" for something to look down on others for. Hard to say what "this" refers to, but perhaps it means that others find the beliefs and lifestyle tiring themselves and so they are "hungry" to take it out on others. Anyway, those are just my thoughts. What you guys think?

There’s a difference to bringing sin into the light and judging those who have committed it for as we all know sex and perversion is blinding humanity the multiple ways of sexual intercourse is corrupting not the status of society but our own interpretation of reality the sex between a man and a women is detrimental to human survival but sex between man and man, women and women ect is just excessive it’s uncalled for and to any of those who condemn me of any sort hear me out what is the point of sex well realistically it’s whole purpose is creating another human being into existence but what’s the point of homosexual sex for satisfaction, or ‘love’ is an overstatement it’s realistically a perversive, unnatural and disgusting way of contact

Fore warning: had a lot to say, so this might be pretty long... I grew up LDS. However, now that I have stepped aside from the church, my mom and I have noticed how toxic and controlling it is. They literally teach women that they are inferior, completely powerless, and only exist to serve her husband. Men, on the other hand, are taught that they are basically the only sex that matters in the world. My mom raised me, an undiagnosed autistic kid, and my brother, a boy that can't walk, all by herself for majority of my life. From the year my brother and I were born, to when she met my current step dad, the men who were supposed to help her, treated all three of us like shit. Like we were nothing. While a member of the church, my mom and I were taught that when my brother passed, he would go straight to the highest level of Heaven, no matter his sins just because he is disabled. My mom and I, on the other hand, had to earn our place in any level. While I was only 5 when I was taught this, now that I'm almost 18, I realize what that means now. We were taught that, unless we were perfect Mormons and followed God's word exactly, we would never see my brother again after he passed. I don't want to 'live' that way in the after life. Now that we've 'quit' the church, we are much happier. I know why a lot of people, including Hozier, are upset with the church and religion in general.

I think what he means is that love is his religion and that we should all adopt to that philosophy instead of praying to a god of hate and judgement well as depicted of some religions and to just find The Love Inside of each other that's how we can find truth and meaning to our lives
@obeyandy69297 жыл бұрын
Praying to a God of hate and judgment? God is love... He does not hate or condemn, He loves and forgives in ANY and ALL circumstances. He doesn't care what you've done in the past. He cares about you repenting, letting Him be your Savior and He'll help change your ways. Who else can know us more than the very one who made us. He knew who we were before even being born. In Psalms 3:6 it says "In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will straighten your path." Give praise to Jesus for he is for us and never against us.

I'm a worship leader and love this message. For others to be ridiculed while others think they can place themselves above others is a huge problem in general, not just church. There are more hypocrites nowadays than ever. To go to church doesn't make you a Christian. Love others as Christ did. Just because there is ridicule doesn't mean you aren't allowed to have a prosperous love life in life on earth or in heaven. Whatever your beliefs are. Being baptized at our church means you will live your life from that day forward to show the world to gold you accountable if you do not show the love that you should.

Huh .... in 2015, Hosier personally said this song was about homosexuality and its oppression in Russia; and gays being attacked by homophobic groups in Russia that were similar to neo-Nazis. So what is this guy talking about !

Your review is not much of a review fine sir. I’m also pretty sure this song is about a homosexual forced to hide his sexuality because of the church.

I think the song is about religious discrimination, because of in its video there are two gay men and they are chased down and one of them is torchered.
@Kay-oc3cz3 жыл бұрын
To all the people who thought it was about two homosexual men, technically yes it is about a homosexual couple, but only in the video. In the lyrics it is about a heterosexual couple. The song either way talks about sins, like sex. It talks about how many religious people will go to the extent of beating up/killing a people who have "sinned", kinda like the KKK. The KKK did not like Catholics, people of color, LGBTQ, and ect. Do not take offense to what I am about to say, this is MY opinion: I believe that people created religion to control people from doing what they want, nobody actually knows what happens when they die or how we were created until we die ourselves. But, to me it doesn't matter what gender, sex, sexuality, or religion as long as you're not hurting anyone, I love you all!💕😜

This song is a Religious Anthem in itself! Hozier's a believer in God and Jesus Christ, and knows he's a sinner. Yet, he also knows, about the hypocrisy of Organized Religion's, and the people within that realm, are also sinners! But rather, the sinners that they are, self-Righteously point a finger at the rebellious one, not taking time to re-examine themselves, or how they approach what they believe in? Obviously, Hozier is in love with a woman, who turns him on sexually. Their isn't anything wrong with that, as long as they love eachother, not only for the pleasure of sex, but unconditionally? (Love from the heart, does cover a multitude of sins.)

@alexter0011222 жыл бұрын
I dont like the song after the meaning was explained. Because religion gives us something to aim at, a higher self and morality. It's not condemning because atleast in Christianity God loves us more than anything. Hozier is pushing a leftist ideology that negates basic ethics and tries to indoctrinate people into pleasure and distorting God's image. Listen to Jordan Peterson lectures more if you want to understand how this song had wrong presuppositions.

I think good poem is the one that can be interpreted in many ways. I am not a fan of a single interpretation. And I really like these lyrics. I don't think it is particularly about being gay. It is about being human. A lot was written in psychology and philosophy about the similarities and connections between religion and eroticism. I think this is a highly metaphorical song - you can even take the "funeral" in the beginning as a metaphor. Forgetting our existential dilemmas through sex...
@wasitjustadream23453 жыл бұрын
Great comment. I agree

I don't think the song can justify sin by saying there is sin in the church. Yes, the church does have sin but confrontation of that kind of sin is addressed in the bible. Secondly the song introduces the idea of "worshipping sex" which in an of itself is idolatry and lustful, and if it is with another man so shall it be also a sin of bisexuality as it states no thief no fornication no idolater no adultery no bisexual or hypocrite shall inherit the kingdom of heaven. So to all Christians avoid this song.

Yeah, the MV was about homosexuality, but the song was about a religious approach to all sin, homosexuality included.
