You can buy the cans from Harmony, and they are called Engergy Drinks, so all we can guess is there's some splatoon magic in the can that grants you incredibly strong regen and mobility upgrades.

Maybe the boost comes from a social aspect. Kind of like bards and musical people during times of war in the past. A refreshing drink during the middle of the match by a fellow inkling/octoling giving you a morale boost, coupled with the sweetness of the sugar to give you a hype boost, and the intensified action part may be an effect from the drink giving you better focus. Some type of sugar rush without having your body be all shaky.

If you're going by the ability buffs for the drink flavors, Tacticooler grants 57 AP (the equivalent of 19 sub abilities) for all of the buffs except Run and Swim Speed which get 29 AP, so the gazpacho and cherry apple flavors would be in much lower concentration compared to the other five flavors. It'd be a generically fruity blend with a bit of matcha kick, which honestly sounds quite tasty.

I think the most likely solution is that the ink tanks on the inklings back work like iv bags, and the drink gets put into the ink supply. I think assuming that ink would be similar to blood in splatoon, so the adrenaline could be diffused into their blood stream through their ink tank, and if you’ve ever had an iv you’ll know that you can taste the salt content in your breath because the transfusion in the capillaries in your lungs transfers the salt. So I think that they don’t even eat the drink, but there would still be some sort of taste to it, which might either be just salty, sugary, or dependent on ink color.

I’ve had squid ink pasta and it’s delicious! Definitely has a unique flavor, but the “salty ocean” description is relatively accurate.

My headcanon on what’s actually in the tacticooler cans is that it’s actually a sort of jungle juice cocktail blend of all the different drinks you get from crab-n-go for the abilities that the tacticooler provides. So it’s a combination of gazpacho, cherry-apple, citrus, grape, matcha, salted melon, and whatever the hell “actionberry” is supposed to be.

Knowing the personality of inklings, this thing probably has 500g of sugar and five coffees worth of caffiene. Flavoured to the brim with every artifical fruit flavour known to squid kind.

I'm thinking that since Inklings and Octolings are able to change their forms, get splatted, respawn and have some pretty amazing athletic abilities, their bodies would metabolise a lot. Metabolism is the sum of chemical reactions in the body so that might mean that Splatlings are able to easily ingest and 'metabolise' the Tacticooler energy drinks! As for what it would taste like, I'd like to think it's just a highly caffeinated sugary drink, knowing that Splatlings would probably not enjoy drinking brine or cold water. When you deploy a Tacticooler, some Splatlings who consume it have a 'Refreshing!' speech bubble atop their characters, this certainly implies that they enjoy the drink. Maybe they really do like the taste of brine...

For that last question, I will note that not all liquids have to be water based. Since Inklings are made of ink, it would make sense that they drink it.

I’m pretty sure I read that the text on the tacticooler when deciphered literally reads “redb” or something alike, so I imagine it would just taste like a red bull. The instant boost I would attribute to it just being a game mechanic, but if we’re looking for an in-world reason I’d suggest that the liquid once drank is absorbed into the body the same way ink can be recovered removing the whole digestive system time delay.

I think it’d probably taste similar to Red Bull as it’s seemingly a reference to it based on an advertisement that players noticed on Mahi Mahi Resort where it says something along the lines of “Red Fish” and the logo looks similar to it.

The liquid thing is not that hard: in the JP version of S2, Pearl tells the viewers to hydrate by drinking water, and no, don't tell me Marina says that they can't, that's a NA thing, like the Splatfest Law, in the JP ver they don't mention anything about them not being able to drink water

For that last question, i believe that Inklings and Octolings have some sort of water-resistant insides of some kind? It doesn't make much sense considering they would dissolve on the outside but not inside, but hear me out. I saw a theory that when an Inkling/Octoling "pops", they actually just have most of their ink explode out of them making them light enough to become those little ghosts until their respawn machine refills their body with ink! Which could then make more sense as they wouldn't of actually dissolved! Also, if i made any typos please let me know lol

The quick respawn may be the speed boost applied to the player also being applied to their ghost when they're splatted, making the ghost get to the respawn thingie in record time

I would like to believe it changes based on ink color, but knowing Japanese media, it's either Amrita, aka avocado, or just Ramune, likely just the classic flavor.

Honestly, stumbling across this specific video in my KZfaq feed and clicking on it for the first time was absolutely hilarious. This video was just an advanced explanation of what I had theorized early into my Splatoon (and KZfaq content creation) journey. I had always thought that the drinks were liquid adrenaline; ever since I made a video about a year ago about me trying the Dynamo Roller for the first time. This was really amusing to watch! Great video!

apparently salted tomato tastes pretty good, so gazpacho flavored ink might be it, like it's tomato flavored and they use the natural salt to make it gazpacho flavored. maybe the can is made of something edible so they just eat the whole drink? and the ink lets it bypass any membranes in their body so the boosts are instant

Funny thing about the Quick Respawn bit near the end, I was thinking that the drink gives enough energy to even affect their souls or whatever floats up from when they get taken out to make them move back to the respawner quicker. It's a bit of a stretch, but the series has shown that literal floating platforms have been made by Octarians so it could be possible.

About your ink-based adrenaline shot theory: I think Cephlings probably either have two circulatory systems, one for blood and one for ink, or share a joint circulatory system for both fluids. If the adrenaline infused ink does get absorbed into the inkstream, then it would just do the exact same thing adrenaline in our body does since adrenaline gets transported by the bloodstream, assuming that if the bloodstream and inkstream are separate that the inkstream can actually transport hormones.

this reminds me of one time where i was playing splatoon with my girlfriend, and for some reason i saw the opposing team deploy a tacticooler and thought, "i wish i could steal all of the drinks from the enemy's tacticooler." from then on, we've devised progressively worse sabotages for the tacticooler, including but not limited to tampering with the drinks inside them, and knocking the damn thing over to waste all of the drinks inside.

I actually have an idea for how these work. My theory goes as follows: These are much like Energy drinks but the caffeine is replaced with a modified version of Methanphetamine. This drink produces very similar effect to Meth, the main difference being that the effects are more inmediate and the duration of these effects is far shorter. It wouldnt even be the fist time Meth is used for combat purposes, as German tank crews used Meth to be able to move day and night without stopping during the French campaign and in the early stages of Operation Barbarossa(the invasion of the Soviet Union).

I have no basis for this but I always thought that the tactic cooler drinks tastes like a lesser known energy drink called Rip It. Mainly just because the can reminds of it but it also fits somewhat in the context of Splatoon because it was originally only manufactured for U.S soldiers

The big issue with the theory based on the concession stand drinks is that those drinks don’t actually give those buffs - they make you more likely to roll those buffs when leveling up pieces of gear.

I think I remember sheldon talked about the tacticooler being sugary and sweet, so my personal guess is that it's a blend of Marigold's drinks.

I personally subscribe to the idea theres at least some kind of special ink in it that boosts absorption. I mean, Marie has her special Low Tide ink that's never mentioned again, implying there are variations of ink types, so I wouldn't be surprised if there were inks specially designed for foods. Especially considering cephalopods can't be exposed to water on its own - maybe it's made of carrier molecules where it can carry molecules of water for that sweet sustenance all life needs while making it safe for cephalopods to drink. There could also be different types of food grade drink ink, such as health-promoting ink, candy ink, etc. - then, these different kinds of ink are used in the concessions drinks, giving them their fun various boosts. And again, since inklings absorb ink easily and quickly, their effects can be as fast or as slow as needed.

I would just assume it to be some form of sugary caffeinated energy drink, and that the reason the effect is so much faster than real life caffeine is due to a combination of: 1, Inklimgs ate made mostly... of Ink. Since they're already mostly liquid, the caffeine of the drink would be able to circulate through their bodies much faster than a human's metabolism could; 2, it's a special weapon, equivalent in lore to the ability to transform into an immortal Kraken for 12 seconds or charge a spirit bomb to nuke anyone unfortunate enough to be in your line of sight; 3, it's a funny colorful woomy and veemo game made by Nintendo, and much like the Zelda timeline, it doesn't have to make a lick of sense.
