I'm surprised Honda never did that with the Honda Element which has essentially a clamshell tailgate. Luckily for me it wasn't that often when I had to have both the top and bottom let me open when I own an element.

The plate is mounted to the gate. So when you have to haul something with the gate down, your plate can still be visible

Flip up license plate, put tailgate down, and step back. You will see the license plate when tailgate is down. My ex owned a Baja.

It's so when your tailgate is down you can still display your license plate because on all your other trucks the license plate is on the bumper not the tailgate so Subaru did that so the license plate can still be seen if your driving with the tailgate down think about it ....!!!!😂😂😂😂😂

The baja had a removable bed extension that you can buy from factory. The license plate feature there is so it's still legal to drive with the extension installed.

When the bed extender is being used, the gate has to be down, so the plate flips up so you can still see the plate when driving with the gate down.

it's both to use your plate as a table for very light things, and to allow the plate to still be visible when the tailgate is down

So many people already figured it out. When you're driving with the tailgate down your license is visible. It was part of their marketing to attract trail bikers which often put their tailgate down in route to the trails. Part of a getting you to the trails marketing campaign.

@@emperornateI had one with blown headgaskets I bought while at the dealer. Coolant and oil looked like a slurpee, would throw the dealer tag on it and use it for lunch daily. Finally fixed it a few months later and coworker bought it for his wife. It's not a ford.

Northern subaru dealers: This is so you can wash the salt off behind your plate. Southern subaru dealers: This holds your beer... drop the tailgate for a keg though. California subaru dealer: That is a premium option... it allows you to drop the tailgate to get maximum MPG while still showing off your license plate...which is legally required here. New York city subaru dealer: Ok so.. this.. we suggest you remove... cause your plate WILL get stolen..

These shipped with a bed extender where you put the talegate down and the cage of the extender rested on it. This made it so you don't get pulled over for not having a visible plate while using the extender.

The Subaru Baja came wotha flip over hed extender that would bring to just over 5 feet. To do this you had to out the tailgate down. Now, you have to display your license plate so they made the bracket so you can still display your plate while having a full normal bed size.

Since the ‘bed’ is so short and therefore useless, some people put the tailgate down so they can haul 1 bag of dirt. With the license plate bracket that flips up, the tailgate can be in the lowered position.

Someone’s never driven with the tailgate down.. Baja’s came with bed extenders - like the Nissan frontier. This way you can put more stuff in the bed and still have a visible plate that’s attached to the tailgate.

This feature also appears on 1949-51 Ford and Mercury station wagons. Google a picture and look and look at the rear tailgate. Both taillights and the licence plate are mounted on rods. When you drop the tailgate, they automatically swing up and point to the rear, so you're safe and legal.

That and also your license plate holds dirt and other stuff behind it so being able to clean behind it is a plus a dodge avenge holds a lot behind the license plate it leaves streaks after you wash your car but yea it's mostly for when the tailgate is down
