I don’t get why everyone was mad. That was so annoying to watch everyone screaming about how they didn’t want to choose but no one was willing to vote or contribute any thing to decide.

The average person doesn't exactly wake up every morning eager to make that kind of choice. Great power, responsibility, and all that.

In an ironic twist of fate Laudna and Imogen leave Bassurus the way they entered it. Separate and apart from each other. They entered with the rift of the broken rock and Imogen feeling lied to separating them, but now they leave with death keeping them apart. It really makes what Ashton told Imogen about Bassurus that much more poignant. Imogen: What made you leave (Bassuras)? Ashton: You’ll know when we get there. It’s not a good place for people. It’s not a good place for anything.

I was riding the emotional roller-coaster at that time and was caught so off guard I nearly laughed at that. It was the," don't you dare put her in that hole", that once again had me welling up with tears. I've heard that screemed out by people or children, and even wanted to myself, particularly when a child or adult is dealing with their first death or an unexpected death of a family member, friend, or pet. That 1 line welled up so many memories and emotions that went with them inside of me from myself and other people I have helped that I'm just glad I was picking up my daughter at the time because it was too much. She managed to just pull me right back out of that near mental and emotional spiral of unexpected memories and emotions. I learned today that that phrase is cryptonite to me. I'm writing this hours later when I got back to this and and just writing that phrase down and talking about this is enough to nearly make the flood spill over again. She did a very good job of conveying with her voice the amount of pain, anguish, and distress that often goes with somebody screaming that phrase and yet she didn't overdo it but my mind can never forget what it truly sounds like.

I mean the cast have that many heart to hearts that this really isn’t that much of surprise. If they spent a little more time concentrating on the task at hand, and devising plans rather than pushing narrative and character development at every opportunity, Laudna might still be alive.

Everyone will point out performance of Marisha, Laura and Liam and rightfully so, but for me Ashley was a standout. The way she shedded off Fearne any layers of confidence she put around herself and showed a scared little girl living at her core was exquisite.

I respectfully disagree. She seemed too worried about what Ashley would do and didn’t want to upset anyone irl. For me it removed immersion. She just seemed flustered and took 5 min in game to get off a spell that only had 30 seconds to happen. It robbed the moment of urgency and impact. Imo.

I had somehow, up until that point, been completely dry-eyed. But Fearne’s constant repetition of “I don’t know what to do”, that little wobble in her voice when she says she’s scared, oh man. That broke me. Incredible acting this episode. I don’t think I’ve ever been this distressed about a PC death since campaign 1…

Ashley's delivery of "Can you please come back? Because i'm getting a little scared", the entire scene was brilliant in how scared and innocent it was. It had that innocence of a child pleading for a lost friend to come back. Fearne thinks she is 120 years or more, that time she spent with Morrigan. Fearne's parents think it wasn't only several years since they saw their child. What if Fearne is a child in some ways, maybe emotional maturity or experience, but an adult in body and mind otherwise? Morrigan extracted the debt for safekeeping young Fearne and stretched their time together. That would explain Fearne's chaotic toddler energy pocketing all sorts of trinkets.

It seems to me like she did actually live for 120ish years with Morrigan, despite her parents only giving her up like 6-7 years ago. I think her personality is partly just her own chaotic nature, but also a bit of just childish nature from being raised by a grandma figure that seemingly encouraged her to continue being playful and childish, like when she 1st got her. So it seems like while she knows about things that a 120-yr-old might know and is flirty and stuff, she also has quite an innocence to her, as if she was a sheltered child who hasn't seen too many serious things. Which only makes the line hit even harder

Liam's face also says SO MUCH in that moment. And this was one of the things in this episode that broke me - when my dear friend Matthew died, I was there. And when I look at Matt, I sometimes see a bit of my Matthew in his face (something about the cheekbones and the mouth). So when he said that, it just HURT all over again because I know EXACTLY what he means, and he reminds me so much of the friend I lost.

I worked 8 fatalities in the last couple years (EMR first responder), 5 of whom were people I were close too. Yeah, watching someone you care about pass on in a violent way is a very distinct experience. My sympathies to anyone else who understands that experience.

@@LizardOnAMushroom2358 How is it metagaming? He's one of Keyleth's personal guards (not to mention Derrig's son-in-law) and somehow Vex and Percy's existence is outside knowledge? While I don't personally feel like it is a viable option, if he hadn't suggested it, all we'd be hearing is 'Orym knows someone who can do resurrections, why isn't he saying anything?' Tiberius' schtick was Orion making things up out of thin air without even discussing it with Matt to make it all about him which is a full 180 from anything that Liam does.

@@zedre7633 The disconnect happens for me when it's more than reporting though. I don't think FBI agents can just ask favors of the president. He's right to let Kiki know that there's some fuckery afoot, but he was instead talking about having Keyleth Tree Stride to them and resurrect a stranger to her. Like I said, it's not out of line quite yet, but we're getting to the point where things are getting way bigger than the party, and the temptation to let a lvl 20 druid/ranger/fighter do some of the leg work for them may be strong.

@@Aetheria60 Whether or not is meta-gaming is between Liam and Matt, in truth, but that line is blurry due to Liam personally knowing all about campaign one's characters, since he was there. I worry that he may have undue familiarity with these characters do to his own personal relationship to them instead of Orym's. Things like asking for favors from Keyleth to resurrect their dead friend wave as red flags to me. That kind of stuff is totally within the same vein of what Tiberius did back in C1, perhaps not quite as loud, but using power you know whether personally or peripherally from your character's background to fix personal problems for your character is a slippery slope. I'm surprised Matt allowed him to make a character that was as close to an old campaign character exactly for this reason. I'm just pointing out that this is something I see as potentially being a problem.

I have a theory that Fearne would have choosen Orym either way, it was a great choice for Ashley to keep the result of the coin flip a secret. It would be so chilling to have Fearne confess episodes later, in a quiet moment with Orym, that the coin actually landed on Laudna.

Oh not even a question. I mean if Imogen had been in charge of choosing she’d have chosen Laudna over everyone else, so there’s no reason Fearne should be any different. Really there shouldn’t have even been a coin flip except for the fact poor Ashley was (understandably) panicking out of game and needed something to help her focus.

Honestly with how badly she single handedly destroyed this group... rn they need someone as OP as C1 characters if they want to level this playing field in < 3 levels. I feel like there was a lot held back. And that's for a group on 1 fight. Add a few more people on lvl 6-7 Imogens abilities and it seems like this should become a lvl 14+ campaign to not risk tpk

For all the talk of how Chetney was Travis' attempt at making a character that his wife would never want to date, it seems like Chetney is turning out to be the most amusing of all of Travis' characters for Laura. He gets so many laughs out of her with just the smallest things, it's very wholesome.

After last week, I had the thought that if they could revive Fearne and Laudna, they could ask Keyleth to bring back Orym. I'm worried that Keyleth would be more open to resurrecting Orym, who serves her, than Launda who technically serves Delilah.

True Resurrection weighed heavily on her mind in campaign 1, as it felt unfair for her to choose who stays among everyone who dies in her very, very long life. I can see her not wishing to, even though it would tear her up like everyone else who's passed.

It completely undermines any risk if they have a level 20 druid sitting in the back who can quickly undo any problems the party faces. They'd probably pass it off as something along the lines of her respecting the natural passage of life and death when refusing

I don’t think Fearne was planning on reviving Laudna at all. She’s a fae who follows her own moral code and I think she would’ve healed Orym because shes closer to him. The fact that Ashley decided to not show or reveal the coin toss and also had such a guilty look on her face at 3:14:40, when Imogen was thanking her really solidifies it for me. If this is the case, it was such a brilliant and in character move for Fearne

I honestly thought Orym died from spoilers since I am behind on viewing but figured in that moment Ferne has the history and connection with Orym from Exandria.

As far as we know, Fearne could've very well cheated on that coin flip. She is the only one who saw the result and quickly put it away. I'm not saying that she didn't want to ress Laudna, just that is very in character of Fearne to cheat on the result to favor Orym, the same way Imogen would favor Laudna.

Both of them exchange hearts and reach out to touch one another but don't. In C1 it was Keyleth (Marisha) saying goodbye to Vax (Liam). Now it's the other way around. To quote Keyleth from C1, "I'm not ready..."

I don't think she's asking, "Do I go?" Instead, she's saying, "I'm going." She clearly waited until they were out of Liam's moment to gather her things and was just letting the DM know she was leaving the table. Marisha's too smart a player not to know that there was a 50% that her character wasn't going to survive the beginning of the episode even if the group didn't talk about what they would do in this eventuality (which I'm sure they did-any D&D table would between sessions). In D&D games, characters die. In some ways, I hope that Laudna doesn't come back because that could serve to model that point for those who look at CR for ideas of how to play D&D. The character died, player rolls up a new character, the player and the DM fit that character into the story, and the player returns to the table where their friends welcome them and their new character starts the process of joining the group.

Orym getting the full-on Deadpool 2 "you're not done yet" treatment from Will absolutely destroyed me. His story in particular has struck a nerve with me. I love Orym, I love his mission, I love his backstory, I love "Big moon little moon," and I love how much coming back destroyed him because he was so fucking close to being with his man for all of eternity, only to step away once more for the good of the world because it's right. Not just because of a vague sense of duty but because it's *right.* He knows that. Will knows that. I love them. I want them to be together forever, but not yet. Not until Orym avenges his people. God dammit, Liam, you beautiful man, you have done such a gorgeous job with this character.

Knowing how much she's been dealing with for god knows how long, I'm not surprised she forgets how to play D&D. She's got other things on her mind. Having been in similar situations with abuse etc, it's hard to even function as a normal human being when that shit is going on. Add anxiety on top of it and you've got a mess lol. I've always loved any character she's played though, she seems to put so much energy into it. I love Pike, Yasha and Fearne so much.

Character death is sometimes hard to deal with especially when very skilled voice actors are involved. The way Laura begged for the lives of her friends was incredible. It reminded me of when Travis yelled 'FIX HIM' as Grog back when Scanlan died. A part of me doesn't want to see their characters die while another part of me is curious what they'll come up with next.

(Keeping things intentionally vague in case people haven't seen/heard this). The largest problem I have with this is the entire setup. The characters were killed for a plot point. Everyone who died might as well have been wearing red-shirts for the entire campaign. Imogen is the only PC character, the rest of the party is playing NPCs. The entire Odohan fight was a railroad, the character deaths were a railroad. No one had the slightest possibility of surviving that combat. Odohon at some point attacks 4 times, 3 on-hand one off, with infinite shadows. So Matt threw a level 20 Psi-Fighter with legendary resistance and legendary attacks, and apparently infinite movement along with all fighter abilities, at a party of 8th level characters in a can't avoid/can't run fight with the intent to kill as many characters as possible till Laura got the hint OR failed a saving throw...all to make a point for the story. What I really want to know is: Did the players who rolled up new characters after this want to play different characters or was this just DM Fiat that took away the agency of half the party? I know when I roll up a character and spend enough time and effort to create a backstory for them that I become at least slightly attached to the character. Many characters die, that it was all but planned that my character was required to die so that a DM could further his plot? That my entire hours of gameplay were simply leading up to an unavoidable and unwinnable encounter set so that my DM could make a plot point? Every DM can kill a party. It doesn't take skill or craft to kill characters. Deus Ex Machina is terrible writing...whether it comes in the form of saving the heroes or doing them harm. The party was introduced to Esteross at it's inception, completed the missions they were given, leading to Esteross sending them out to Basurus to capture Treshy. The DM put Treshy in a secured stronghold, gave the party a way in, showed the party where he was, then threw a chaotic event at them challenging them to get him out. He transitioned from that only opportunity into an unwinnable and unavoidable combat to kill characters so that he could check off his plot point. Every character that died in that combat is a redshirt. Every character that lived beyond that combat is also a redshirt...other than Imogen. I'm...exceptionally disappointed.

@@douglasw0 I dunno, by the sounds of things she was getting fairly low on hit points. One AoE spell took out all the shades in one go, and I thought they had way more spell slots saved up, I couldn't remember them using them all before this fight. They also had a lot of powerful potions and that magic-amplifying stuff on their hands. It genuinely feels like they would've scraped by if they didn't scatter or Odohan didn't roll top of initiative. A lot went very wrong very quickly. Some definitely would have gone down, but it'd get close enough for tension rather than having multiple deaths. But yeah I agree about Imogen, feels weird having a main character in this campaign.

The fight was actually really nicely balanced to be a challenging threatening fight but still doable. Like a dark souls boss.

It is something I have seen across player groups especially when you have a "dead" character in games like D&D where there is a chance of coming back. I remember campaigns where after a long battle late at night we ended the session with one character dead and more mooks approaching. The entire next session was filled with tense jokes, glances and sad smiles as the dead character's player sat at the table just listening and watching the follow-up fight and then the main villain battle. The tension was palatable but underlying until they got to a temple and with their sacrifice of diamonds scraped together from their meager fortunes the aged priest communed with the character's spirit first before attempting a resurrection (a rule I use to give the dead player a voice in deciding or guiding if there should even be an attempt to bring them back because it can be devastating to party finances) and he just said: "No, she asks you not too, the outer planes are fascinating and the next adventure was too tempting for her to return" (he played a female gnome) and so the evening ended the players and their characters mourned the loss and a little later under convenient circumstances a little kobold showed and joined the party fitting in, in a new way. The session after the mood was high and everyone was enjoying themselves again.

This is why gentle repose is such a great spell to keep prepped. That way it keeps revivify online for a week in game time so you can get diamonds if you are caught unprepared.

Revivify only works for a minute post death, so the next available spell they can do is a 5th level Raise Dead for 500gp diamond (or Reincarnate with 1000gp in rare oils and unguents, but that is unlikely and unnecessary as they have the whole body). Or some other kind of ritual because of Launda's unique background.

@@shaylic3795it states that days spent under the influence of the spell don't count against the time limit, so I would argue that if GR is cast within the 1 minute after the death, Revivify is still in play after 10 days, but if it is cast after that, then the time for Revivify has passed

Why would she get mad? She's the only character to have any reasonable expectation to cheat death outside of resurrection, and also the most likely to have death directly trigger character development. It's all but confirmed with the Gentle Repose shenanigans.

I mean she belittles all the men she comes across for no reason and never mentions and good things with the fathers of her characters so she’s more of a manipulator. Also a good player? Clearly you’re forgetting when she turned herself into a goldfish instead of any other creature that can fly. She continuely forgot her monk can learn about her enemies when she punches them. She also forgot strength of the grave ability is a CHA save not a CON save so she probably could’ve survived long enough to get raised or could’ve rolled better. She’s a rp player, but that’s it.

Yeah I could feel him upping his comedic performance in response to Laura’s goading to try to keep everyone’s spirits up. It was also really clear in the last episode when everyone was scared they were going to TPK, Travis had a very “imma go down swingin’” mentality. He knew if someone was going to die, he was going to get some licks in on Otohan before going down. You could just see that his priority is making sure everyone has fun and is safe.

I don't think it's metagaming because Keyleth and later Vex'halia were already introduced in the campaign and both have some ties to Orym and Imogen, so it's perfectly reasonable for them to seek them out for help. Specially since Orym used to be Keyleth bodyguard and knows that she can help. It would be metagaming if they weren't introduced in the campaign and they were just trying to use their old characters to "cheat", but I'm sure Matthew wouldn't allow that if that was the case.

So I don't think it was Delilah that "Gentle Repose" headed off. I think it was the shard of Gnarlrock, doing what it does... transmuting. We know so little about it, but we know it's already impacted Laudna before. Maybe this is a case where Delilah was genuinely being honest in saying the rock was too dangerous/powerful.

In campaign 3 she's shown a lot more attention, but yeah in 2 it really felt like she was not there for most of it, attention wise. I don't blame her though, they still worked a lot outside of the campaign and this really is still a job.

Finally starting to watch critical role after hearing about it for so long has been a blast. This episode and the last one was a punch in the gut with the tone shift after all of the fairly light-hearted moments. While I don't cry easy, the acting, urgency of the situation, and being so attached to the characters made me shed some tears. Props to the cast for creating such a vibrant world and powerful story, I'm extremely excited to catch up to the current episodes.

Campaign 1 is hard to get into, especially because of some tension at the table. The problem player leaves after episode 27, and they really hit their stride during the Briarwood Arc, which is episodes 24-38. It's a truly spectacular story. I watched it at 1.25-1.5 speed, mostly, so it wouldn't take as long.@@ExplorerValenis

@@ericgrande7155 - yeah absolutely. Like 10 minutes of RPing a choice Fearne had to make in about 24 seconds, or she couldn't bring back either of them. But if Matt had reminded them of the time limit and rushed them, that would have been even more stressful and not fun for the players. And even worse if he'd just let it play out and then told them the spell failed because they took too long, that would be realistic but very not fun for the players. Like a further unexpected loss that would feel like Matt being unfair, not tragic in-game circumstances that the players just have to accept. Imagine if they'd failed one of those resurrection checks, though, especially the first one. I don't know if Guidance can help with Matt's revivify rules, but it did mechanically work like an ability check. I was really worried that nobody had cast Guidance before either of the attempts, even though they had time (e.g. FCG could have cast instead of dashing, and moved + revivify the next turn). FCG just barely made the first check.

1:10:59 Marisha blowing kisses goodbye to her friends, I feel like that’s how Laudna felt in her last moments, not with malice or hate in her heart, but love, kindness, and empathy to her friends, appreciating and cherishing all the good times she had with them. She did not allow all the trauma that has endured define who she is to the end. However, I am a little worried since in the previous episodes, Delilah kept telling Laudna how her friends will betray and that she's better off on her own, yet in this instance, Orym gets revivified and not her. I'm not saying her friends betrayed her, it was a very difficult decision for them to make at that moment. But I feel like Delilah might use this information as an advantage to manipulate Laudna into doing her bidding more. At 1:02:36, you could feel Imogen’s aggression and desperation in bribing Deliah to bring back Laudna, but eventually, the aggressiveness fades away and turns into grief and guilt at 1:13:02 - 1:13:20. :( At 1:04:00, “We’ll find a way back for you, I promise.” The way Ashley/Fearne delivered that line really adds to the emotional turmoil of the hard decision she had to make. It’s like she’s a scared little kid again, feeling helpless and alone. Not wanting to lose either of them, she reaches out to Orym, her closest friend and somewhat parental figure, to help her.

Yeah, personally Id like for one of them to die without being resurrected, at least not for a while, otherwise it is like it almost doesnt matter what they do, they're always gonna all survive... Unfortunately it turned out to be Laudna who is one of my favorite characters in the party, Id have liked for Orym to go cause apart from the cool combat flavour here and there, he is kinda boring and my least favorite of the group. Also the whole Delilah thing is interesting too. Even if they dont ressurect her which Im pretty sure theyre gonna be able to, it would be interesting to see which new character Marisha would come up with.

This episode gives a nod to the first two campaigns. Campaign 1 with the residuum, and Campaign 2 with the Dunamancy vials that give fragments of possibility. I just love these little throwbacks.

it was a bunch of dice tumbling around offscreen when Tal leaned on the table gesturing that he was putting down Laudna's body. Sam and Travis caught it and wasn't sure it was a fart or what. It's so funny.
