I was a mechanic for a highway department for over 30 years and one thing I learned about tires on a dump truck if you want to get the best life out of your tires look at the recommended tire pressure that’s how them tires was tested if it says 120 psi that don’t mean 90 that don’t mean 100 you’ve got to keep your tire pressure where it’s recommended so many guys want to run low pressure because of the ride it’s a dump truck If it says 120 pounds put 120 pounds in it good video talk to you later

You’re doing a hell of a lot more than most guys do, nice to see you’re actually trying new stuff to see what the best tire per dollar is, as well as actually taking the time to note how a tire is reacting to how you’re using them! The dump truck and truck industry needs more JST’s!

Balance your tires they last longer also they make centering lug nuts to center your steer tires. This makes them run true alot of tire guys are to lazy to use them because it's a extra step. Also put a few drops of oil on lug studs when reinstalling saves your studs from heat and seizing up.

I have run recaps and I found I can buy Toyo's for about 30 bucks more than recaps, so I just use them. I have ran michelins as steer tires and they are awesome till you realize the high cost and fast wear are killing your bottom line. I ran those xdt grippers for a long time, but they are awesome in the mud but kind of soft on the shoulder. I stick now with closed shoulder aggressive inner toyos. I am pretty happy with them. Bottom line is durability and cost.

Not bad, 70,000 to 80,000 miles between tire changes. Good idea to have a few spare sets all mounted and ready to go while the wheels are sent out for inspection and polishing before mounting a new tire. Makes for a better looking and safer fleet. Not many do even that I'd guess. Supporting the fleet is king or you are going to lose large trying to avoid it. If the work/jobs are there and remain coming, the trucks you have need to be running those jobs 100% which means zero down time is king. Thanks for sharing open/closed shoulder versions in tires.

Great educational video Justin, I appreciate you posting these type of videos. I do have one quick question to ask if I may? On your Lift axles, do you have to run a certain type or size tire/wheel combination to get what weight rating the lift axles are rated at? I know on your first 567's you ran a little bit bigger or taller tire/wheel combination than you are running on your last 567's and 389's. Thanks!!

Only complaint with recaps is if the casings get old and start to weather check. If you are using your own cases it’s not so bad but if you take what you can get it gets sketchy. I have had better luck with Chinese tires then recaps

Got a set of Coopers tires on the front of my truck and I like the look of the tires, but the tire wear is not the best. I have a lil bit over 20k on them and there about half wore out. I run a 30 truck fleet (30 tractors and 35 trailers) in WI, we haul frac sand in pneumatic tanks. The trucks run either a 6-mile or a 40-mile loop, which tears the shit out of the equipment loading 27.5 tin in the trailers. Currently, I run a mix of super singles and 11R22.5 on the tractors and trailers. We run all Michelins for new and caps. They don't wear for shit as they are a soft compound. I'm lucky to get 40,000 on a set of XZE load range H steers, which are bus tires. The drives I get about 60,000 on a set of XDN2 Virgin or cap super singles, but about 100,000 out of a set of 11R22.5 XDN2 drives. Trailer tires, I just figure on changing a full set every 90 to 120 days. I was looking at Toyos and Yokohomas as an alternative to switch to because of the harder compound and should last longer. I don't really count miles, I go by time for changing tires, brakes, and service work; so if I can extend out that time it will benefit my operation.

The myth that it is illegal to repair a steer tire is perpetrated by the tire dealers so they can sell more tires. You can repair punctures like a nail or bolt. They can't be section repaired and run on the front. Most tire blowouts are caused by low air pressure. Drivers will lower the pressure on the tires for a better ride because they hear it on the idiot box. [CB radio]

Floats are mainly on dumps to help from sinking as far down on jobs sites where it's soft. Helps from getting stuck and so you don't drag your front end thru so much dirt. They FLOAT on the soft dirt and don't DIG in so bad when trying to turn.

I blew a steering tire on a 77 International Paystar 5000 tri-axle in 1978. Was on the PA.turnpike heading west to east palestine OH. They were bias ply goodyear floats with plenty of tread depth it was a sidewall failure.doing about 68 mile mph. The tk had dual steering boxes the right front blew broke the drag link off. Could not steer it went up on a embankment in the slow lane laid it over and shut down the turpike with 28 ton of coal blown through the gaurd rails all the way over to the eastbound side. Was a lucky man got nailed in the head by safety triangles that flew out from behind passenger seat and had some fuel pouring in from saddle tanks below passenger door.thank goodness no one else was involved.
