The extra metal flange on the Doge is called an “Eylet” and is for locking and binding for pivoting your blade cemicentrically aroundbtheirs to false edge cut from a bind without the removal of your own blade.

@claytonwoods5603

@@MrJedi5150 Literally everyone who works there goes through that exact same thing the first month or so. :) There a few reasons why it isn't done. Peter Johnsson designed all the blades with very specific hardware for balance and historical accuracy. Each pommel and guard was specifically carved to go exactly with each type of blade, and with each other for weight distribution and accuracy to original finds. On those models where the hardware can be swapped out for alternatives, those swaps have generally been made available already as independent models. Usually everyone in the shop gets to the point where they have to feel it for themselves, so we'll get to hold a 'correct' model of a sword, and then swap out to whatever hardware we thought would look better, and then get to test that design and 99% of the time, it just doesn't work at all and you immediately understand. The other 1% gets tossed back at Peter to ask him what his opinion is on the combination and sometimes those went into production as available options. Also, the hardware isn't bought. Each pommel and guard is originally carved by Peter and then mold are made. Those molds are used to cast production waxes which are then individually touched up and smoothed by hand. Then they're sent out to a foundry, where they are connected to a sprue and cast using lost wax process in iron, then shipped back to the shop. Once back at the shop, the rest of the sprue is cut off and ground down. While there is sometimes extra stock, for the most part, the waxes are done in batches to match the number of swords ordered, plus some extra for loss.

I recently got an Albion Maestro Lichtenauer with a blue grip, and damn guys, it's worth it! It's attractive, safe to use, handles well, and is an absolute tank. Some of my instructors have Maestro line swords that have seen nearly 10 years of hard use, and are still in excellent condition. And $490 dollars is not terribly expensive when compared to other swords on the market.

I have the Doge and can say it is one of the best cutting swords I have used. The spur is interesting as they seem to only be on a few surviving Venetian swords. +Skallagrim I'm digging your Albion wishlist. The Cherusker is an absolute want. I was always curious about early/ancient germanic iron age swords. I find it interesting that it looks like an early seas, but with a falcata shaped handle. And I have a Deurio spatha. You have to get one. Everything you said about it is pretty on point. Its beautiful, hella sharp, and you'll feel the weight when you handle it in a handshake grip, but not in a hammerfirst. I have the Clontarf, but from vikingshield.com with a blunt blade. I imagine its lighter with a live blade cause it has heft with the blunt. And I personally want me a Stamford. Its a simple looking sword and it looks identical to a sword found in Southern France in the Garonne River which runs through Bordeaux and Toulouse to the border of Spain. It wouldn't be hard to imagine early Frankish knights and Moorish knights using this type of sword. Yeah, the arming swords are pretty similar. I love the Sovereign. Thanks again for posting and sharing yourself and sword knowledge on youtube. BTW, whatever happened to that Albion First Gen spatha you had? That was the first video I saw you in with the long hair and white full-sleeved Renaissance shirt.

Nice video! I received a Tritonia as christmas gift 2y ago (by myself ;-) )--i really like it despite feeling very heavy. One can tell it was made to be used from horseback. My only replica, i normally collect originals from napoleonic wars. Far more agile and far lighter then the Tritonia (~700gr for a cavalry saber), but the Tritonia makes a nice contrast on my wall.

The Squire Line Viking was the first "real" sword I bought (based off of Skall's Albion recommendation). It came in a little after Skall's car wreck. It's a great sword, quick, powerful, and even though it's a squire line, the fit, finish, and durability of the sword are top notch. It's a good option for those who want to try out Albion but don't want to drop big bucks for a next gen. Thanks for the recommendation Skall!!!

I have a Leichtenauer and the Arn Templar sword with a scabbard made by DBK. Got them about 6 or 7 years ago. You’re right - when I first held them I was a bit stunned as they felt incredible, I didn’t know what a “real” sword felt like. They’ve changed their website I noticed recently. They no longer offer the Beastmaster, John Carter and Frazetta special edition swords...too bad. If I were to get another Albion sword (and could be patient enough to wait) I would get either the Munich with half-wire wrap or the Dane zwei-händer. 👍🏻

The Thegn looks like it's a plainer interpretation of the famous Anglo-Saxon sword found at Gilling in Yorkshire. I really wanted to make something like that on the course I took with Owen Bush - but a fullered blade just wasn't practical in the timeframe of the course, so I ended up making an arming sword with inspirational elements taken from it. Consequently, I kept all prep drawings that I did for it: it's still on my 'to do' list. I'll have to remember to steal the stats of the albion website - or maybe just speak to Peter J about it... I also have a celtic sword on my list of things I plan to make - I live a couple of mile up the road from the site of the Llyn Fawr Hoard find. It contained the oldest iron object found in the UK - a late bronze age/ early iron age celtic sword. It was intact, as opposed to being ritually 'killed', so it was probably a cache and not a ritual offering. I know there is a reproduction on display in the Museum in Cardiff, but I really want to make my own.

11:56 For the dodge, I would think that the circle over the crossguard would be for the Italian grip, which involves wrapping the index finger around the crossguard, and the circle would be there to keep the finger safe from an incoming blow, although, its not fully closed which does not make sense

That's not what he is talking about. There is a little spur or thorn that sticks out of the back of the blade. If you've watched Skall's vids, you'd know he wouldn't be confused about the ring.

I used to have a Vassal. Kind of regret selling it now, it was pretty neat. Although I did make a good bit of money off of it.

I have been a regular watcher of your videos and for some reason I just found out I was unsubscribed, but I can see your vids in my recommended list because I pressed that bell thing next to the subscribe button a few weeks ago. Did I miss something? I know for sure I was subscribed.

I agree that it would be nice, if they had sabres, rapiers and renaissance swords (the fancier ones, with additional rings)...

Hi, Skall. I wish Albion would make a Gladius Hispaniensis since that's the Gladius I prefer and it's so hard to find one. Usually the Gladius that are made are of the Mainz type.

Skall, according to the Albion website, the Huskarl's pommel is actually riveted. The earlier viking swords only look riveted, but the later viking swords, the Huskarl, Jarl, and Hersir, all have riveted pommels.

Funny I just took a peek at Albion's site after many years, after seein Medieval Review peeking at it. Then I came back to youtube to find this one too! :). Most of the ones I'm coveting fit with yours. Among single handers, I once got to handle Gaddjalt and Squire a little bit and both were very nice. I like Gaddjalt's looks a lot (unlike you apparently :)), but, Squire handled amazing, like ridiculously amazing... As for the longswords, even if I was super-duper rich, I'm sure I could get myself bankrupt by just buying many of those longswords. I like Dane a lot too, but before the Dane, there was Angus Trim's AT1592, which I always wanted to have. Same type, but it seem to have a slightly wider and thinner balde from what it looks like, so it may be a better cutter. Alas, it has been discontinued for almost a decade as far as I know. There is a very favorable review for it on myarmoury.com. Finally, I wonder how much of an effect may you have on Knecht getting sold out :P.

I've been eyeing the Sovereign Oakshot Type XIV for some time. It's just a big commitment cost-wise. The Kriegsmesser was another I was seriously considering, but that's gone now, unfortunately. The swords look beautiful and the quality is top notch, but it's difficult to pull the trigger and spend so much.

You know the great thing about being a Katana Fan boy, most katana look alike so once you have one, you really don't need to buy another until you can afford to.
