The weather can have a significant effect on the oil in your engine. In this video, Ben will discuss these effects and try to demonstrate them- with the least scientific means possible.

Thanks for the video, I didn't really learn anything in particular but it was good information well presented and your video quality is fantastic. Happy holidays! :) Personally I'm a huge fan of synthetic, I picked up about 0.5MPG consistently switching from conventional the previous owner had in the vehicle to synthetic 5w-30 in my 08 Ford Escape V6 with 215K miles. When I switched from conventional 5w-30 to Royal Purple HPS 5w-30 in my 92 Chevy 1500 V8 I actually gained 1-1.5MPG and the engine got much quieter. I did try regular (non-HPS) Royal Purple in the Escape and it was not any better than other synthetic so no point in spending extra and I use whatever brand I got on sale, Valvoline, Havoline, o'reilly oil, etc.

One thing look at also is oil analysis trends on forums for your specific engine and oil brand it tends to like. For duramaxs for example it really dont matter what you dump into them, oil analysis is always great. Some engines do show better results with some brands like amsoil or other real high end syn oils.

My personal opinion is if your owner's manual says you can use 5W-30 or 10W-30 then there is no reason you can't use 0W-30. All three oils are giving you the same protection at operating temperature as a straight SAE30 oil.

I live in Canada and we get some really cold winters up here in Northern Ontario, we also get some really hot days, so I use 10W-30 Mobil 1 Full Synthetic Annual for the Summer and the 5W-30 for the winter. Don't forget to check your oil every fill up. Also in the winter don't just start and go. Let her warm up. Most modern cars are coming with remote start on the keyfobs they give so take advantage of that and click your keyfob a good 5 - 10 minutes before your ready to go. Also I like to not drive the car until my oil reaches at least 0C. Ill get in my Charger after 5 minutes, check my oil temp and and if its still in the negatives I'll sit in her give it a minute or so then gradually rev it up to a higher rpm for a few seconds. This creates a bit more heat. I'm not gunning it, I'm just bring it up by about 500 to 1000 rpm and slowly so its not working that hard. It gets it warmer a bit faster and better than just putting it in gear and driving it. Once I'm up to 0 I'm off. From there temp climbs relatively quickly. Winter is coming. :)

Putting back some life in an old thread. W can sometimes be referred to weight or winter. For viscosity it is recommended to keep around what is advised by the manufacturer. This is because the oils gaskets, bearing tolerance level etc are all tested at the manufacturers recommended levels. Running anything lower can also cause minimal oil leaks and running anything much heavier can also cause gaskets to die out a lot quicker. My thoughts and experience. BTW great channel guys, deserves more recognition ! Love the video edits....

I run 10w40 in my corolla all year long, it calls for 5w30, but the engine is worn and it burns through it too quick, when it gets really cold wich is hardly ever, I live in Virginia usually doesn't get below 20 here I let it warm up for 10 mins, if anything running thicker oil has helped it, it seems to make better power and it doesnt burn through it as quick

Question to ponder uppon. 🤔 what about a high mile engine, the wear on the piston rings and bearings. Wouldnt that require a higher viscosity to conpensate oil presure. i.e. if a new engine requires for example 5W-20 for the first 75,000. Once it passes that mark shouldn't it be a thicker viscosity due to the wear on the internal componets. ? What are your thoughts on this as only cold starts where discussed in theory...

The only thing I don't understand is what anything higher than 0w even exists.. Even if the outside temperature is warm surely a thinner cold start oil is always better? I can only guess the chance of burning/leaking during the warm up

On my 2014 WRX, Subaru says to use 5W-30 full synthetic. I switched over to Shell Rotella T6 5W-40 for the Winter. I may go back to 5W-30 in the Spring/Summer and see how things go. I'm more interested in what brands people are using. My first oil change was with Mobil 1 but a lot of people in the Subaru community said to move away from it since it breaks down quicker than other brands in the EJ25X motors. Last 2 have been with Shell Rotella, but the garage I will be having do work on my car at uses MOTUL exclusively.

Higher oil pressure, better lubrication, and better temperature control under high load. So thick oil is mostly used in performance cars but the thicker oil is also useful for worn engines where the bearing clearances are wider. That thick oil fills that extra clearance. Thicker oil also burns slower so its good for worn engines that burn oil fast.

10w30 will retain its viscosity better under high temperatures, at least in my experience. The viscosity numbers on the bottle don't really tell the whole story, I've found viscosity at operating temperature can vary wildly depending on brand, and you would think since Synthetic has much better cold flow characteristics than Conventional, how could they both be rated at 10w when cold? If you're going to a thinner W viscosity, it's generally a good idea to increase the hot viscosity by 10 (going from 10w30 to 5w40) so you can get the advantages of better cold flow characteristics and higher oil pressure and film strength at high temperatures, especially if the engine is worked hard.

So is letting you're car warm up before you drive it when it's cold out a good idea, or is that a myth?
@devinlaine-toner4254
@devinlaine-toner4254 6 жыл бұрын
Twice_Crispy Gaming why would that be a myth ? You should always warm up your car so the oil circulates around the engine efficiently before you start driving. As seen in this video, oil circulates around slower when it's colder, so you'd want to wait even longer on a cold start warm up and wait for the rpm's to drop of course before driving off.

Devin Laine-Toner That makes perfect sense. But it was also something I read on the internet, so it's always good to double check info found online

0w20 will flow faster with any full synthetics. Just follow your owners manual, as we do not live in the North Pole, no need to overkill.

Definitely winter, but the important thing to remember is that it's for the cold viscosity.

learn yourself, then teach others. 0w40 and 10w40 will NOT behave same in operating temperature. also 10w40 and 10w60 will NOT behave same in cold condition.

Want an opinion from an actual chemist? Synthetic is best. There are 5 groups of oil. 1-5. 5 being the purest structures that are made in the lab (esters, polyglycols and silicone). You don't really run these in their own but are often additives. Group 4 are laboratory built oils as well which are synthetically built polyalphaolefins. These have fantastic range of benefits from higher flash point, viscosity, range of operating Temp etc. These are your best oils. Example being Amsoil and potentially Pennzoil Ultra/Platinum brands (Pennz is made from natural gas which mimics a lot of the behaviour including better viscosity). Grade 3 is the majority of the rest of oils...Mobil 1, Castrol, Royal Purple etc. Etc. Group 2 and below = do not purchase.

I disagree with your stigmatization of conventional oil. A conventional oil will protect more-or-less as well as a synthetic oil of the same grade, just will typically need an oil change more often due to less oxidation stability. Also note that per API standards, a 0/5/10W-40 oil is allowed a minimum High Temperature High Shear rate of 3.5 mPas, while 15w-40 has a minimum of 3.7 Thus, the oil that flows worse at low temperatures can conceivably protect your engine marginally better at operating temperature.

moofree it's not a stigma dude,it's science,synthetic oil protects better because the molecules are all of the same size and they fit better together thus creating a better better that has less holes in it
