Well, Scottish red head here. 10 % of the worlds red head population is in Ireland and 6% in Scotland. Scotland has been part of the union within Great Britain for over 300 years. Some of us are getting quite fed up of it! As although we have our own parliament and some devolved powers. Most directives come from a London government that we didn’t vote for. The population of Scotland is only 5.5 million but England has 66 million. Glasgow used to be one of the roughest cities in Europe, however much has been done to curb crime. Kilts are mostly worn at weddings and football games (soccer) and true Scotsmen go commando! Bagpipes are not played by everyone and only tourists ask for deep fried Mars bars. There are many regional accents and most of us are fairly down to Earth and tell it like it is. We don’t have our own passports (yet) as we are part of the UK. The most offensive thing you can say is that Scotland is a region of England! It’s a country. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

People in Scotland if they rationalize their hatred of England it isn't actually England they hate, it's Westminster they hate, and very likely if Scot's realized that and properly articulated that they'd find they have common ground with most working-class people in towns in Northern England on that same issue. The British Government system is very London-Centric and the rest of us are largely left to fend for ourselves.

@@OneTrueScotsman I was in my local pub "at that time in the 90s", which was near the local train station. (In the East Midlands) and a bloke walked in, and I started a conversation with him. He was from Greenock. And he was my best friend for nearly twenty years. Always said to me the first English bloke he had a conversation with, had ever spoke to. If I could rely on anyone it would be him. Never tight. The reason the Scot's got that stigma, is because in 1603 when, King James's the 6th of Scotland, ( James's the first of England), came to the throne the Scot's kept things close to their chest in London. So at that time the English were calling them mean. (tight). You can imagine that a man from another country was ruling England Like I said, in a earlier post, I Love the scot's. We are all family.

Edinburgh is 400 miles from my home in South Wales. First time I went to Edinburgh was by car with 5 of us in the car, we were staying in a small hotel for the Scotland v Wales Rugby International. Since then I’ve flown twice from my local airport and several times by coach on a holiday. If the coach holiday is deeper into Scotland then we usually overnight on the borders. On one trip from the Orkney islands we had two overnight stops, one just south of Inverness (Kingussie), then on to the borders for a second stop in Gretna Green the home, about 710 miles. Scotland is a deceptively large country. Good Craigh (crack) is Irish slang for having a really good time. Craic is an Irish word that was borrowed from Scots, not the other way round. The crack is first recorded back in the 16th or 17th century in Scotland as meaning news or good conversation, good time. It was exported to Ulster and passed into Irish from there in the same way as it passed into Scottish Gaelic in Scotland.

That's a pretty good video, not least as it is filmed on the Sussex or Kent coast (the chalk cliffs give that away), and not in London like they usually are. Glasgow used to have a very hard, violent reputation during the 1950s; but is now almost entirely transformed into a city of year-round culture, that celebrates all that it is and is, without doubt, one of the friendliest cities on the planet. Edinburgh people are often a bit more reserved, at least to begin with; and while Glaswegians very much speak their own dialect, Edinburgh's accent is much closer to King's English and can come across as slightly patronising - and I say that as one who has lived in Edinburgh for the past 17 years as prior to that, I spent 25 years living in Southern England. Celtic refers to a very long-established culture shared by the Atlantic fringe of North-Western Europe if you like - Brittany (France), Cornwall (England), Wales, Ireland and Western Scotland - in most of which the reddish hair genes certainly are a thing. As Scandanavians tend to be predominantly blond, it might be to do with the fusion of Viking genes with the generally darker shades of other parts of the UK. As well as music, the languages spoken by these countries tend to be collectively descibed as Celtic, as do forms of art, particularly from earlier Christian expressions. There are very many differences between Scotland and England, though most are hard to describe and certainly to summarise. The most obvious is perhaps the common identity thing that one of the girls in the film alluded to, although I would add the much more open, friendly and communal disposition to others as a very close second, if not actually part of the same. We have a lot more time and compassion for the whosoever - yes, of course we have our mostly-friendly rivalries; but if somebody's in need, it's everyone's concern. Very sharply different to England in recent years is that for the most part, immigrants are welcome in Scotland; and as political awareness has grown generally, most of the Scottish population tends to lean towards the left of the political spectrum. In many respects we are much closer to Northern, and perhaps Western England, than we are to the South and East.

The border between England and Scotland is just like a state border in the US, and people cross it freely as often as they want. Many people will live in England and work in Scotland or vice versa. Like the different states in the US, some regulations and laws are slightly different in the two countries - but only in areas where power has been devolved to the Scottish Parliament. I try to educate people that visit Scotland that a lot of people that are English move to Scotland and open shops and facilities, so when visitors go in to these places they think they are talking to Scottish people, they are not, they have just moved here for a better life, when you hear an English person speaking its completely different unless you are a high to do scottish person with money and great education in top universities taught with English teachers. To be fair, a lot of us don't see it that way. I think that's mostly an English POV. Only 8% of Scots consider ourselves British, according to a recent nationwide census. Two-thirds said they were Scottish-only. My country is Scotland. We're in a union with the rest of Britain right now, but that's subject to change. After the way we've been treated by Westminster for the last few decades, I have little love to offer the rest of the union. However, I'll treat every individual with the same level of respect they show me, whether they're from my country or any other.

A brief overview of British racial history: The Celtic influence goes back far beyond the Vikings. The Celts "invaded" the British Isles long ago, mixing with the Beaker People who built Stonehenge and all the other ancient neolithic places. When the Romans came along, the English Celtic people adopted Roman ways, but they never really got very far into Scotland, where the Pictish people managed to fight back: The mountains and moors of Scotland are easy places for local people to defend. When the Roman legions left the English people were left to look after themselves. The Angles, Saxons and Jutes saw their opportunity and were the next invaders, with the stories of King Arthur being an ancient folk memory of an English Celtic war leader trying desperately to pull together a war band to oppose the Angle-Saxon invaders but ultimately being beaten and overrun. The Celts were forced back into the places they could defend, primarily Ireland, Wales, Cornwall and Scotland. Then came the Vikings, who nearly took over the whole of England but met their match in King Alfred, who re-took southern and western England, leaving the north and eastern England under Viking control but with Alfred as their overall king. The Vikings made some inroads into the Celtic areas, but became more integrated into the Celtic tribes rather than supplanting them. So in some areas of England there is a strong Anglo-Saxon heritage, in others a strong Viking one, each reflecting that heritage in their place-names. But in some areas around the fringes (such as Cumbria) the place-names are very mixed, with Anglo-Saxon, Viking and Celtic rubbing shoulders and getting along nicely. Then in 1066 the Normans invaded England, bringing their mixture of French and Viking influence, and turned everything upside down. But that's for another video... :o) The upshot is that the Scottish heritage is a mixture of old Celtic (Pictish) with more modern Irish Celtic influence (who brought the name "Scot" with them along with Celtic Christianity), very different from the largely Anglo-Saxon, Viking and Norman heritage of England. The English and Scots are very different animals, with very different heritage, and the Union between us is often a difficult one. As with Brexit where the Scots voted strongly to remain inside Europe, while the English (I'm ashamed to say) voted strongly to leave. And since England has so many more people (and votes) than Scotland, the English point of view held. Whether our union can survive that tension is yet to be seen. But the Scots are known to be proud people who love their country deeply, who fight when they must and who make friends only when they must. But those friendships run deep and last long. I hope our union does too. And no, we don't need passports (yet) to visit Scotland. Long may that last, because it is a beautiful country of deep lakes and strong mountains. And to give you a taste of the Scottish/Irish Celtic heritage, try watching Celtic Woman singling of Tír na nÓg (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ms6HZNCZnLuaXYk.html).

@@OneTrueScotsman As an Englishman, I was reluctant to dare to speak for Scotland. But yes, I find our history fascinating, too. I didn't mention Hadrian's Wall, but I feel like I should have done. Although the Romans did push on and move the frontier north a few times, they didn't stay long. And our modern "frontier" lies very close to that line even now, 1,900 years later. My home is only a short distance south of it, but it still marks a very clear dividing line between us. The fact that we have lived at peace with each other for 400 years, after 1500 years of battles and raiding, and can now cross that dividing line without a second thought is for me a wonderful fact. Long may we stay friends.

Unfortunately the early saxons to the UK, and pre UK Saxons didn't seem to be literate, or care to make records. And I'm also curious about pre-Roman Britain, which again records are scant. That was a lovely post but King Arthur and the British Celts in what became England were not culturally English. Arthur was probably a Dux Bellorum and he was our foe. He was grafted onto a fake Franco-English cultural narrative after the Norman Conquest. To be fair, the British contributed more ancestry to the English than the Anglo-Saxons themselves, and the dull reality of the English and the Celts is that through most of history we got along just fine as archaoloigy is showing. Some early English kings have British names such as Penda or Caedwallon.

The are old rivalries between Scotland and England going back centuries, (these days mostly sporting). There is a sterotype of "dour Scotsman". On both sides there are some who hold grudges/animosity but on the whole it's bantering exchanges. That the Scots are tight is a myth, from history the Scot didn't have much in the way of cash so not a lot to share or give away, (they like to play up to that reputation at times - but some people from Yorkshire share that - being "canny with their brass"). My experience with my Scottish mates is that they are generous with their time and support, and they've always stood their round in pubs. They made tremendous contributions to the British military, way beyond their numbers. They also turned out some great engineers, scientist, and inventors. They have the 3rd oldest University in the UK at St. Andrews just behind I think Oxford and Cambridge. BTW, The Celts were one (the largest group?) of pre-Roman peoples of the British Isles. The Celtic peoples today are the Scots (including the highlands and islands), the Irish and, a (different branch of Celtic language) the Welsh. Celtic influence are also in the Isle of Man and Cornwall. Glasgow did have a terrible reputation as a rough, hard place, I think it's improved a lot with old tenements being replaced with more modern housing (but knowing the UK in general council housing probably not high quality and unlikely to be over-long lasting, that's not a Scotland only thing). So yeah, the Scots and English may swap insults, (and maybe a punch or two) over football (soccer to you), I hope less punches over rugby (a more "gentlemanly" sport) and than goodness the Scots seem much less obsessed over the silly sport call cricket (sorry, if I have to hand in my Englishman card but I can't stand cricket, never could).

I was born in the south of England but have lived in Scotland for the past 15 years. Firstly - Scotland is an amazing place to live with brilliant people and I wouldn't ever want to leave. From personal observation - most of the English people I meet here are northerners and it is much more common to cross the boarder for the shorter distance to northern England than to head way down south or vice versa. The border is very porous. People from the south of England may head to Edinburgh for a city break but it is less common for them to see much of the rest of Scotland - though that may be changing with the 'staycation' love for camper vans that took off during the pandemic. Just personal observations and generalisations - there are exceptions of course!

They think we need to be governed by an inept government that our larger neighbour chooses for us. Who else in the world thinks that way about their own countrymen? Especially when they have moved away for most of their lives They've given up their right, really, to be taken seriously any more. I'd take the opinion of someone who moved to Scotland, from England, or Wales, etc, more seriously than someone who moved away from Scotland but still thinks their opinion matters.
