Starting out in simracing is not exactly easy - so many terms you've never heard ... That's why today ChampionJoe has tied up two of these terms: Oversteer and Understeer. But what exactly do these terms mean, what is the difference between them and how do you tackle them? Find out in this video.

Understeer is when I hit the wall with the front of the car. Oversteer is when I hit the wall with the rear of the car.

This was really helpful, thank you! I've been doing some of the things you mentioned intuitively. But what you're explaining basically only applies in the exact moments you experience under/oversteer, correct? What if your car has a constant bias/tendency towards one or the other? Can you compensate these with particular setup tweaks? I'm guessing weight balance might help, but how? And bonus question: How can I iteratively find the best compromise of my car?

I only ever get oversteer at the beginning of the race. At the green light, I spin out and crash … but hey, I don’t have an under/over steer problem anywhere else 🤷‍♂️

For the most part, understeer and oversteer can be resolved by decreasing and increasing angle of rotation ingame and wheelbase. Too much understeer, then decrease wheel rotation. Too much oversteer, then increase wheel rotation.

Understeer is when you try to turn and slide into a wall. Oversteer is when you try to turn and slide into a wall _sideways._

The concept is very easy to grasp, but knowing what is happening to the tires and physics (simulated or real) is why videos like this are good for even veterans to reference. This then most likely leads to learning not only how to avoid, or correct it, but also into more advanced things like tuning (cat setup) that can also help mitigate these effects.

Both of these effects can be bad, but ask any racer, sim or otherwise, and they prefer oversteer because they can still snap-correct it depending on the car setup, speed and physics of the game. Understeer is worse because there isn't anything a lot drivers can do to correct this if they're driving is up to par. The default setup for most sims and simcades is understeer to prevent beginners from flying off the track into a wall. Sometimes, it take a lot of trial & error to tune out the understeer which is why many prefer to have to deal with oversteer if given the choice. Besides, even Joe hinted at how fun a controlled oversteer can be if done right aka Drifting.
