So much emphasis is put on copying HOW other filmmakers shot in a certain way and now WHY they shot in a certain way.

This is indeed the core of visual storytelling (cinema): telling trough images, using film techniques.

Thank you for calling out what it means to be a filmmaker, rather than a videographer or a content creator. I don't have a problem with any of these professions, but people misuse them interchangeably.

what i have a problem with is ppl making tutorials about lighting and saying this is how you do it and this is what you do or dont do this or do that. Instead of saying let the story dictate your light and camera placement

A video to rewatch a couple of times. Great content here! The search foi the "cinematic look" just as a technique and reproduce that only for aesthetics is a common situation. I've done it many times.
@matangox

Finally! That's something I've been saying for years. I've been watching youtubers talk about how you need a f 1.2 to get the "cinematic" look and while I'm watching their shots, they don't look "cinematic" at all, to be honest they look more "photographic" than "cinematic". When someone starts telling me about long 1.2 or 1.4 lenses, I tell them watch Fallen Angels by Wong Kar Wai, where most of the scenes were shot with a 10mm lens (9.8mm if I'm not mistaken). The f stop and the slow-mo have nothing more to do with cinema than a 10mm wide angle lens stopped at f8. It's all about telling a story with images. Most of these probably never watched a Kurosawa or Ozu or Visconti.

I always say the same thing. Most overused and wrongly used terms on youtube for teaching film are: Cinematic and B Roll. Now add buttery smooth slow mo and Epic and you are yourself a Filmmaker. 🤦‍♂ That's the reason I stoped watching Peter Mckinnon, Mati Happoya and all the others because even though their content was kind of good, they were selling exactly this and everybody else jumped on the same Bandwagon. Same wit editors a la Watchtower of Turkey or TK Alis... I can't stand all those people dragging the filmmaking through the mud. And worst part is: that it is finding it's way into mainstream cinema now.

Bro... Cinematic is the adjective of the word Cinema. Look up what Cinema is and means than you get the answer. KZfaq is hardly the right encyclopedia for things like this. I have seen films with some pretty much horrible or purposly bad made cinematography and the movies were excellent. Why? Because it was the whole package with actors, music, editing that told a compelling story. This means cinematic work.
@Leprutz

p.s. Casey Neistat says it too. You don't need the fanciest cameras or lenses... all you need is some sort of camera, an idea and a paltform. Easy as that.

many filmmakers today are afraid to be "put in a box" or trying to define cinema. Which I think is a major issue. You can't always run around and point your camera at something and call it cinematic without MEANING.

Nice video, its along the way of thinking we got taught back at film-academy, and its how a great DP should think. But i would like to add, that production value is a real thing, and that using a cine camera, nice lenses, props, nice location, extra's, cranes and grip does work. Hence the amount of commercial garbage thats still entertaining to look at. The word cinematic actually just means; as used in films.

Visual story telling does not have to utilize Orange-Teal color grading, or Mist filters. These are terribly overused implements. This is not cinematic to have Orange-Teal Haze in literally every scene of most movies these days. There are a good reasons most modern movies suck so bad.

Cinematic is just a word. From what i see, everyone has a different interpretation of the word. It is pretty meaningless, as to how people reference it on KZfaq. First it needs to be defined, before we discuss, the what we do to be "cinematic"

I have no intention of insulting anyone or to be rude but cinematic means- nothing. It means what ever you want to mean. Cinematography means writing the movement, as photography means writing the(or with) light and we never talk about photos beeing "photographic". If cinematic is about telling a story then your video "Canon R5C Cinematic Footage" is very confusing to me. If you find that "far side key is a way of connecting the character to the background....." or whatever, then you'll have to agree that 99% shoots in modern movies have the intention to talk about connecting the character with the background, and that is not true. In my opinion, there is a certain trend in cinematography and practical reasons for that more than hidden meaning in the lighting choises. Just my opinion. I love your channel and have learned many good stuff from you but this "cinematic" thing all over YT has gone too far.

Wait, wait. Couple of notes here. Documentaries tell stories too. And documentaries ARE NOT cinematic. And talents giving interviews in documentaries are well lit and have DOF and still looks like video from TV. Baraka (1992) is a documentary which does not tell a story and is very cinematic. For me cinematic means - not natural / dreamy / unreal. For example real locations from Lawrence of Arabia to our naked eyes or shot on phone will look very real and natural thus making it not cinematic. All those colors, composition, film grain, lighting, production design makes the magic of the cinema. So yes, just to shoot RAW with DOF and add same lazy LUT on regular video footage is not enough to get cinematic. You need to create cinematic looking shot before pressing the record button.
