In 1982, spritely young DK Jr set out to save his Dad - Donkey Kong from the evil, nefarious Mario. He had a few more sporadic appearances after that, and then? Silence. He disappeared from video game culture altogether, seldomly seen since.
So, what happened? How did this once vital character in Nintendo's gaming empire just up and vanish like that? In the first new edition of Video Game Detective in 6 months, we peel back the layers of this mysterious disappearance and find out...What Exactly Happened To Donkey Kong Jr...

I had it pointed out to me that DK Jr.'s official art for the Arcade game shows him as a child, but his official art for Super Mario Kart shows him as an adult. Assuming animals reach maturity faster than people in the Marioverse, then DK Jr. simply became an adult and is DK's father, and stopped appearing. I thought this was a contradiction to the Mario timeline due to Baby DK's appearance in Yoshi's Island DS, as I assumed that DK was born around the same time as Mario. However, the more likely explanation that makes sense of all the age disparities in that game is that Bowser's minions gathered each character's baby self as they traveled back through time, bringing them all to one time period. This rectifies the continuity As for Cranky calling DK his son, technically your grandson is still a son of yours. Language is tricky but that's actually a valid interpretation of the word ....I am aware this is mostly a video for fun, but I figured I'd drop this knowledge in case other viewers are curious

An alternate explanation to Cranky calling DK his son is that Jr just died / vanished and Cranky raised DK. DK would then be both his son (if adopted) and grandson.

So, what's up with Yoshi's Island DS? In that game the yoshis have to carry around Baby Mario, Baby Wario, among others, as well as Baby Donkey Kong?! He even looks more like the "modern" D.K. and not like D.K. Jr.

Nothing could have prepared me for that ending reveal. Truly, a scoop like this is further evidence that Hard Drive is the only serious gaming journalism outlet. Donkey Kong is Oedipus Rex. -ShayMay's 8 hour Omega Ruby Video is unironically pretty good though, even if its length definitely makes it a little cumbersome to actually sit down and consume.-

Cranky would sell his family (except maybe his wife) for one singular banana. It would not surprise me if he was involved in his son's assassination plot to protect the family's prestige. A possible simple explanation is that dk Jr was the original dk's grandson, they retconed that one point in the original game to make everything else make sense

Technically it is possible to be some's grandfather and father at the same time. You could father a child with your daughter thus being both. Or you could be less incestuous and do it with the the other set of potential grandparents' female offspring.

Classic Donkey Kong (Cranky Kong) is the grandfather while Modern Donkey Kong is the Grandson. So Donkey Kong Jr isn’t the son of Cranky, he’s the father of Modern Donkey Kong. So if we need to find more info, then Donkey Kong needs to talk about his dad.

I know this is a joke-y video but they stopped using DK Jr. because Diddy was more popular, filled the role of being DK's duo better and bc Rare was bought my Microsoft. In-universe explanation is... honestly i don't think Rare had DK Jr. in mind when they made DKC or when they decided that Cranky was an older version of the Arcade DK, and neither did Nintendo when they made Yoshi's Island DS, so i don't think an official explanation for how Jr. factors in the Mario universe is has been decided in an official way, but i do think the Mario movie will answer that. Imo the best way to reconciliate everything is to say Jr's simply an younger version of Modern DK and an older version of Baby DK who was raised by his grandfather and that's why he calls him dad sometimes. It works thematically to have the pair of DK and Jr. still be around as Cranky and Modern DK, and explains how DK can be a baby at the same time as Mario is a baby.

I heard diddy kong was originally a drastic redesign of jr but nintendo didn't like it so they requested rare to either change the design or make it a different character. The "cranky kong = og donkey kong" thing probably came later
