My all time favourite is the Airflo Ridge Clear, not an expensive line at all, and I’ve had the same one on my reel for over 10 years now! It’s got a nice amount of stretch, which I like for fishing the washing line, damsel style booby in a size 12 on the point, two Diawls or crunchers up the cast, lethal for fishing the top 2 or 3 ft of water nice and slowly 👌 Great video again Rhys.

Rhys…this is great. Thanks for the leads. As someone who fishes that airflo hover line I totally agree…for most boat fishing on our trout club waters I find it covers well all the different depth areas of our lake. That’s always an issue which you didn’t mention…many small waters….at least here in Ontario…are full of remnant snags from downed trees or timber…using a washing line set up on a 0.5”/ sec line with booby or fab on point and lighter nymphs on the droppers really is great for fishing shallow lake margins where creeks come in bringIng food and cool water…esp in our 30 C summers all of us are experiencing now! One cheap solution to a .5 line…just coat your floater with Loon sinking line treatment. Eh voila! 🤑 Or simply let you floater get really dirt. Works like a charm.lol. cheers, Michael todd

Hi Rhys, First I must say I really love your videos and I learned quite a lot from you - huge thank you! As a sort of beginning stillwater fly angler, who is unfamiliar with the stillwater scene in the UK, you have sort of touched on a topic of interest for me. UK stillwater fishing is of great interest to me, being on the outside looking in. I wondered if you could make a few videos about getting started in stillwater fly fishing (UK-centric for obvious reasons)? Like I have two topics in mind: 1st: Say I buy an Airflo Switch Pro fly reel with five cassettes. What lines would you recommend a beginning, non-competitive bank angler to put on the cassettes? Floater, multiple intermediates, how about sinking lines? Which sinkers to get? How would a midge tip fit into this setup? Like if you had to limit yourself to just 5 lines, which would you pick? Do your line choices change when fishing from a boat? 2nd: Say as a beginner I know nothing about fly selection, and I buy one of those larger fly boxes: what basic fly selection would you recommend for a whole season of stillwater fishing? I see many videos "tie this or that fly", but I have difficulty finding a comprehensive guide what an adequate basic fly selection should look like. Surely it must contain buzzers, midges, blood worms, some dry flies, diawl bachs, boobies, fabs, blobs, eggs, some lures? Of course, there a load of assumptions to be made answering the questions above. I figure having a #7 rod and a cassette reel is a good start. As a competitive fly fisherman, you probably know more about the sport than I can imagine, but I'd really like to pick your brain to make entering stillwater fly fishing easier for beginners. Hope to see more of your marvelous videos! -Fly Rider

Hi Rhys. I'm planning to fish a washing line for our (unsuspecting) Canadian panfish and would appreciate you suggesting what type of line I should consider. The lakes are clear and the fish feed on buzzers and nymphs just off bottom in 12 feet of water. I was thinking that a Type 3 (3 IPS) or maybe a Type 6 Full Sinking line would work. What do you recommend? Thanks!
@RhysFishes
@RhysFishes 2 жыл бұрын
Whilst those lines would get you down there, they would soon go below the fish and or tangle your flies on the lake bed. Are panfish susceptible to bright colours? If so, try 2 fabs on a sink3 or 5. If your intending to fish buzzers on them, your better off setting a strike indicator up and then setting the first buzzer at or around 12ft after the strike indicator. It is a lot of line between fly and indicator but you’ll be surprised how affective it can be when trying to nail the depth. Fishing buzzers as part of a washing line on a sink 3 or 5 will fish to quick and heavy generally to give you the almost static presentation you’re after when fish chironomids
@hankvana2149
@hankvana2149 2 жыл бұрын
@@RhysFishes Thank you for the detailed reply Rhys! Panfish (Sunfish, Bluegills, Pumpkinseeds) are not large - a good one will be 8 inches long and weigh 1/2 a pound. Because they have small mouths they prefer small (#14, #12, maybe #10) flies. Plain black, brown, grey, or olive flies that imitate nymphs and leeches are most effective but a bead or a hot-spot is often well received. Bright colors work well when the fish are on their nests during the spawn but at that time they will aggressively hit anything. I'll make a point of tying some small colorful fabs to try. I've never fished washing lines before but from watching your excellent videos I have an idea how to go about it. The washing line on a floating fly line makes good sense, from your comment about "soon going below the fish", are you suggesting I should get an intermediate line to fish through the water column "on the drop"? Think that's a good idea, I'll add one to the to the kit! For fishing with a Type 3 (or 6) sinking line I was thinking of letting the line settle to the bottom and rely on the buoyancy of booby or fab to keep the buzzers/nymphs clear ...do you think this would be a problem? Thanks for your help Rhys! Sorry to be a bother with all these questions, even though I've been fly tying and fishing for 50 years the British methods are new to me. Cheers!

I dont spend more than £12 for a fly line. My entire setup is a 8ft 5wt that was £20, £60 Redington Crosswater reel, £10 floating line from amazon. Brandless, the reel being the most expensive part. CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP. Caught plenty and wouldn't change any time soon.

After a financial disaster wich left me btoke and lost all my (expensive top brand) flyfishing gear... but after a while I really missed my flyfishing and tying. I was so biased before qua cheap stuff. Now I have many Chinese made (Maxcatch and Aventik) Rods & reels and lines. But the "upper" segment. Which is still cheap compared to my ex Hardy , Sage and T&T gear. The most expensive rod is under €200. Than I have fully sealed drag reels. They fish/ cast amazing. And I dont catch less fish. Or have less fun doing so. I do have a couple brand lines tho. These are really slick. Made from PUR instead Pvc . And all sorts of shooting heads skagit, single or double , intermediate till fast sink. Etc etc The cheap lines nowadays are not the old single nylon core, wrinkled lines from before.

@RhysFishes slow intermediate is great for traditional upstream North Country wet fly. As you only have a couple of rod lengths of line out the line digs into the surface, without gong far down. If needed you can always grease a few feet of the line to keep the flies up in the water. Slow intermediate is also great for traditional lough style fishing from a boat. I will confess to using 20 year old floaters... which with wear and tear are really very slow intermédiaire lines

I'd say a floater will cover you for almost all eventualities. A slow glass/intermediate or sink tip could assist when you need the flies to sit a little deeper but a lake that's 4ft for the majority means a floater would be the ideal line.
