Thank you, Dr. Finio. This is extremely helpful. Could you also please cover screen sharing with and without side-by-side view, and whether or not being in full-screen mode impacts the recording?
@BenFinio4 жыл бұрын
Hi Marvin - I have another video about side by side view here, but in short, that mode is only available when someone else is sharing their screen, not when you are sharing yours: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a95-otBouJnKlqc.html. However, you can get a similar effect if you have two monitors (share one screen and have gallery view or speaker view on the other): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p9yfi7CE2dWyk6s.html. I don't *think* being in full screen mode yourself will affect your recording, but unfortunately I probably won't have time to test it myself. If possible I'd recommend just doing a quick test of your own to make sure you get the recording you want, before recording an entire meeting and finding out it didn't turn out right.

Hi Sadiya - I have not experimented with multiple simultaneous recordings but I BELIEVE the view will follow whatever the individual person doing the recording is doing, and for local recording they will all wind up with their own local copy. For cloud recording it may be more complicated and depend on the organization or who the host is etc (for example, I teach at Cornell and Zoom is integrated into Canvas for us, all our recordings show up there).

I noticed in the recording the polls did not show up even though I was "sharing results" to the participants. I do want these visible in the recording for students. Do you know how to enable settings so the Polls are shown in recordings? I do not want to have all the thumbnails/ Zoom controls show up however, just the polls and active speaker screen share and video. Thank you for your help.
@BenFinio4 жыл бұрын
Hi - unfortunately I'm not sure if there's a separate setting that would just allow you record the poll results. The only workaround I can think of is to take a screenshot of the poll results, paste them into another program like Powerpoint, then share your screen and show that...but that is cumbersome. Alternatively you could read the poll results out loud (25% of people picked A, 10% of people picked B...).

Hi Dr (of Philosophy) Finio! Thank you--very useful. I believe that the chat is only saved if recording to the cloud. I'm curious if recording to cloud is any different than recording to the local computer for everything else you demonstrated. And what are the pros and cons of recording to cloud vs locally. Again, really helpful. And thank you to your daughter for sharing Magic and her other friends!
@BenFinio3 жыл бұрын
Hi - one of the major differences is that in cloud recording there is an option to record speaker, gallery, and shared screen views all to separate video files. So if you wanted to do any editing/splicing the different views together, it would give you that option. They have a big FAQ about local and cloud recording here that might be worth reading: support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/360040771752-Frequently-asked-questions-about-local-and-cloud-recording. Aside from differences there, I think the other major difference is convenience. If you EVENTUALLY need your recording online for students to access, then if you record locally first, you have to upload it manually somewhere later. Whereas depending on your situation, cloud recordings might be immediately available to students (e.g. at Cornell, Zoom is linked to our learning management system, Canvas, so the cloud recordings show up there automatically). Some people have expressed concerns that if you have slow or unreliable home internet, it could affect the cloud recording and you're better off recording locally, but I have not experimented with this.

Your videos have helped me a great deal as I navigate Zoom as a library programmer. Just curious if the spotlight and pin features work the same in a webinar. I am running a webinar, which I am planning to film. Ideally, I would like the recording to show only the person speaking. Each panelist is going to speak for a few moments and then one of the panelists will speak for about an hour. In an ideal world, the chat would not show up in the final recording. The Zoom articles are pretty non-specific when it comes to what final recordings will look like.
@BenFinio3 жыл бұрын
Hi Sally - unfortunately all my tutorials are for meetings and not webinars. I don't think my institutional license through Cornell will even let me host a webinar myself to test it, I can only host meetings. If you are able to schedule your own webinars, I would just try a test version yourself. Either log in on multiple computers or get some family/friends/coworkers to join so you can simulate what it would be like to have a panel of speakers, and see what shows up in the recording. Sorry I can't be of more help!

Why do you share your entire monitor instead of just the PowerPoint? Does that make a difference? Also, is there a way to record all of the participants while sharing your screen?
@BenFinio3 жыл бұрын
Hi Kristy - you're correct that if you only want to share the Powerpoint, it's better to just share the Powerpoint and not the whole monitor. Sharing the whole monitor can be easier if you want to share a lot of programs because you don't have to stop and re-start sharing for each one, although there's a new feature that lets you share multiple windows at once: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/esWojcdmvKmdhok.html. If you want to record all the participants at once while screen sharing, then you need a Pro account with cloud recording, where there is an option to record shared screen, speaker, and gallery views all to separate video files. I don't believe you can do this with a local recording, which is what this video shows.

Hi Ben, is there a way to record the gallery view but hide your screen or someone else's screen from the recording itself, so only select screens are recorded in the gallery view. As in, say someone is recording an interview between two other people and wants to do a gallery view but doesn't want their screen to show, just the interviewer and interviewee.
@BenFinio3 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael - you could mute your own video and then select "hide non video participants," or right click yourself and select "hide self view." The downside is that then people won't be able to see you in the live meeting either. There is a new multi-pin and multi-spotlight feature: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iMB5oZxy3bm2ook.html so you could try spotlighting only the people you want recorded, although I have not tried this. In order to test it you can just log in to the same meeting on multiple devices (that's how I do these tutorials) or get some family/friends to join.

Hi - unfortunately I don't think there's much you can do. The actual resolution of your video in Zoom will generally be lower than the max resolution of your webcam due to bandwidth limitations (on Zoom's end, even if you have good high speed internet yourself). So everyone looks OK in gallery view since the individual camera views are pretty small, but when you blow one up to full screen in speaker view it looks grainy.

Instead of recording these sessions in gallery mode or low-quality speaker view, I'm just going to set up my camcorder to get a clean feed of me during the live classes and use that as the replay. 1) I have a video about that! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g9B1d8V73K7JdoE.html 2) I'm not sure about a free program that comes with Windows, but OBS Studio is a very popular free screen recorder that lots of people use. There are tons of tutorials for it on KZfaq. I sort of have one here but it is about live streaming and not screen recording: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/it2ihK1zqrXPaac.html

Hi Ben - thanks, very useful video. My question would be, what if you wanted to share your screen, for other participants to see live, but you wanted to keep on recording as many of the participants as possible, not have the recording dominated by your screen. Is that possible, do you know?
@BenFinio3 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul - your best bet is to do cloud recording and enable the option to record speaker, gallery, and shared screen views to separate video files. Then you could use post processing/third party video editing software to combine them however you want. However, this option may be disabled depending on your organization or Zoom license. It's disabled at the admin level for me at Cornell, I can't turn it on.

If I have a participant share THEIR screen - do I need to make sure they have their gallery view correct - or is it just my end. I want to make sure its just the speaker view - so the other person who is sharing and speaking. Does that make sense?
@BenFinio4 жыл бұрын
If you are the one doing the recording, then only your view should affect the recording, not the person doing the sharing.

Hi Doc Ben, thank you for sharing this! But how about if you're only meeting with one person? There seems to be no "spotlight option" when there are only 2 participants. Appreciate your help!
@BenFinio3 жыл бұрын
Hi Joseph - you're correct, I think spotlight requires three or more people. In a two-person meeting I think each person can pin the other person though.

I give vocal training online, so in a 1-on-1 situation it's important that both of us appear on the recording. I set it to gallery, with us next to each other, but the recording jumps between us, mostly NOT catching the important moments from each side, probably because it follows the "speaker" - often singing - and is generally too late as the exercises are brief and require immediate imitation! How can I get zoom to leave it alone? Would really appreciate help on this. Thanks!

Hi - I have a few newer videos on my channel about the multi-pin and multi-spotlight features, check those out and they might answer your question. I always recommend doing a test run (set up a meeting with a second device if you have one, or get a friend to join) so you can figure out the exact settings you want.

ok to be clear...im hosting a video with 5 participants. IT Will be recorded locally. For the recording , i want to see participant #2 ONLY regardless of who is speaking. IF i pin them im thinking it only affects my screen, not the recording. IF i spotlighted them is that the solution? TIA
@BenFinio2 жыл бұрын
see the video around the 3:00 mark - if you are doing local recording I believe pin and spotlight will both result in just that one person getting recorded.

Hi Ben. This is so helpful! Thanks! Quick question...can you make more than one recording in a single Zoom link? For instance, starting a stopping and starting up again...but the Zoom call never ended. Or, co-host can make a shorter recording of their portion at the same time the whole recording is happening for the person who set up the meeting.
@BenFinio4 жыл бұрын
Hi Lisa - admittedly you are the first person to ask me that! Honestly I'm not sure - I believe if you stop/restart the recording, it will still just wind up in the same file. You could use third-party video editing software to split that up into separate video files afterward though.

Great video! Is there a way that I can record just my speaker screen whilst still seeing gallery view? For example I want to send my participants a recording of our fitness class but I only want them to see me in the recording yet whilst I am doing (&recording) the class I want to have my screen on gallery view so I can see everyone. Thanks in advance ☺

If you join the meeting which is being recorded does it show your picture/visual as you join?
@BenFinio2 жыл бұрын
No, it won't show you until after you click the "join with video" button. When you see the little preview that's to let you test your camera, no one else can see you yet.

Hi Ben, thank you for your video. We had a zoom meeting with about 50 attendants and there was one speaker plus me as a translator. The host spotlighted both of us so it was easy to follow, but in the recording we were not spotlighted side by side. Is there a way to have both speakers visible at the same time in the recording?

Hi Eva - I made this video before they released the multi-spotlight feature. This one is newer but honestly I cannot remember if I tried multi-spotlight here (this pandemic is so long and I've made so many videos that I can't remember it all...): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sJ6ohcyAtdepaYk.html

I was hosting a zoom interview with a client the other day and was excited to record only their video and not have my blank stares sometimes show up in the recording while I'm only listening. I needed to create smaller videos of the client from that zoom recording and not have my screen show up, only theirs. However, even though the client's screen would show in the main video screen, there was no thumbnail screen of the client for me to right-click on and select "Spotlight Video". Did I do something wrong?
@BenFinio4 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael - I think spotlight video is only available in meetings with 3 or more participants who have video on. So if it's just you and a client you won't have the option. See this page: support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/201362653-Spotlight-Video

nice infor - wat if there are more video participants - does zoom record all videos on during screen share ?

I have not tested this since I don't have enough computers, but I believe there is an upper limit (maybe 4 thumbnails). You might be able to find this on Zoom's official support pages.

@BenFinio3 жыл бұрын
Hi Louise - unfortunately I don't think this can be done if you are on a single monitor and want to record locally. For cloud recording there is an option to save speaker and gallery views to separate video files. The only possible exception is if you have two monitors - I can't remember off the top of my head, but I have a video about it here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g9B1d8V73K7JdoE.html

Thanks Ben, what we needed for our recorded online meeting was to have the Host record all the presenters and when shared also the Powerpoint presentation. Every time we played back the recorded session all Participants were not shown. By hit and miss we went to settings and changed the selections for Share Screen to enter full screen, scale to fit, and side by side. Then on Recording we selected Record video during screen sharing. We were able to record and play back all presenters and the current speaker and the power point. Does this make sense?
@BenFinio3 жыл бұрын
Hi George - I have not tried adjusting all of those settings. I do know there is a cloud recording option to record speaker, gallery, and shared screen views all to separate video files, if that would be useful, but it may be disabled by your organization (I can't turn it on at Cornell).

When I finished recording a video of myself talking on Zoom, there was no audio that can be heard when I replay it. The audio issue persists in my recorded video even after I use "share computer audio" while screen sharing. Is there a way to fix this issue?
@BenFinio4 жыл бұрын
Could other people hear you during the meeting? If so, unfortunately I'm not sure why the audio wouldn't show up in the recording. The "share computer audio" checkbox is a separate feature that allows you to share audio being played from your computer's speakers (e.g. a song playing on your computer) in addition to the sound detected by your microphone.

HI Ben, Great video. Is there a way to just record 2 or 3 people in a zoom meeting? Can you spot light 2 or 3 people on a panel like you can in a zoom webinar?
@BenFinio4 жыл бұрын
Hi Larry - Zoom just released a new "multi-spotlight" feature (a lot of teachers had been asking for this for student group presentations) that lets you spotlight up to 9 people, but I have not had a chance to test it and see how it affects recordings yet. You need to manually update to Zoom version 5.2 to have this enabled, it's not an automatic update. Hopefully you'd be able to spotlight 2 or 3 people then record them in speaker view. If not, I have a workaround in this video - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a95-otBouJnKlqc.html. If you turn off video for all participants but the ones you want to record, then "hide non video participants," then Gallery View will give you a view of just 2 or 3 people, without the thumbnails for everyone else.
