We got married in Japan and I wanted to share what a Japanese marriage is like. We are an international couple in Japan. Maiko is a Japanese women and I am an American man living in Tokyo. Getting married in Japan is fairly straightforward as you'll see. You have to fill out a wedding registration form and submit the form to the Japanese city hall. We also discuss a Japanese Wedding Ceremony and the related costs for us and our guests. This is my experience marrying a Japanese women and having an international marriage in Japan.

For people wondering why they got married like they were in a DMV. It seems that they had a civil marriage, my parents were initially married like that then they just had a "religious"(those extrvagant type of weddings) wedding sometime after thay had me. Civil marriage is pretty common for young couples who can't afford to host a wedding but they really just want to tie the knot.
@lyndaster46
@lyndaster46 7 ай бұрын
All marriages have that component in America. it is just done after the actual wedding usually. Marriages MUST be registered to be legal. A license is usually applied for BEFORE the wedding and you usually have like five days to DMV the license (edit) except common law marriages.
@ketchup901
@ketchup901 4 ай бұрын
In Sweden even if you have a civil marriage there still needs to be a marriage officiant who pronounces you married, and from that moment you are married. Of course there is also paperwork that needs to be done before and after but there is always a ceremony. If you have a religious marriage, you still need to do the exact same paperwork.

When I visited Japan we were touring around in a shrine and there was a wedding going on, we watched a bit from the side and they actually asked me and my friends to be in few of their wedding pictures. I just went to my first wedding in Japan as one of my foreign friends got married to a Japanese. Fortunately, she made a secret Amazon registry for the foreign guests as she herself thought it was too much to expect each guest to give them $300-$500 for their wedding. I personally don't want to spend too much money on my wedding. I'd rather spend more money on the honeymoon and on a future investment such as buying a house.

Traditionally in the US (not so much anymore) the bride's family paid for the wedding, because like you said the groom's family will be taking care of the bride. If you go way back they bride's family gave money, property or valuable items to the groom's family, it was called the bride price or dowry. In addition way back a bride also prepared a lot of household items to bring with her. Linens, clothing and things and they were often in a special trunk. The groom's family pays for the wedding ceremony rehearsal dinner and groomsmen's clothing rental. Another crazy custom: women buy their wedding clothes and men rent them. Then registration: the couple will visit different stores to make a list of the things they want. Like we registered at a jewelry store for fancy dishes. Lots of people today will register at Target or even a hardware store. It's helpful because then you don't get 4 toasters. Also a lot of people are getting married when they already have a house set up, so they don't even need a toaster. Like my sister wanted a nice cutting board. Not every guest will use the list, you could give something unique like art. Also a lot of people give money or gift cards.

I was shocked to hear that the guest were expected to pay roughly $300. I’ve only gone to one Japanese wedding. It was my Japanese bestie... she got married in Nagoya, Japan her hometown. I traveled there by bullet train.. which was pretty awesome. I was invited to the ceremony and the reception...her husband is Chilean and the ceremony was in traditional Japanese kimono garb held at a shrine. It was sooo awesome to see. For the reception they changed into a tux and wedding gown. I was very surprised to see gifts for the guests at the tables. As the night ended my friend and her husband was thanking everyone for attending and gave envelopes to the departing guests... my envelope had 10,000¥!!! I was floored! She said she knew I came a long way from Yokosuka and she wanted to help with my fare. I thought that was very sweet and different that the guests were given gifts. Thanx for sharing your marriage experience. I share your videos all the time, and miss Japan soooo much.

In Jordan, people, either from family members or friends, give the grooms %50 up to %75 of what they've paid for wedding costs to help them start up their journey - sometime, the grooms will get more than what they've paid, or at least what they've paid. The act of giving in Jordan is called Nakoota "نقوطة" which is derived from Nok'ta "نقطة" which means a drop of water, in the sense that this will help nourish the seed between the newly wed lovers. Congrats, and I wish you guys all the best. 🌹

Congratulations on your marriage, Paolo and Maiko! You two are an adorable couple! I'm a new subscriber from Indonesia. Indonesia is very culturally diverse and there are so many different ways of getting married and holding wedding ceremonies. Intercultural marriages are also quite common, so sometimes a wedding ceremony is a combination of two different cultures, or it can also be held twice in two different cultural ways! I'm a Muslim Javanese Indonesian; for a Muslim from Java, marriage is usually a religious affair first (first thing to do is to register at a local Office of Religious Affairs), and a cultural affair later, or sometimes (as in my case) both happened at the same time. It is not uncommon for an Indonesian couple to have their matrimony (typically officiated by an Islamic wedding officiant) and wedding reception in one same morning. Usually, the bride's parents are responsible for both marriage administration and about 50-70% of funding of wedding ceremony. The groom (or the groom's family) contributes to the rest of the funds.

@benry Cultures and states that emphasise so much on how "free" they are, traditionally are the least free. The US has by far he highest incarceration rate of the world. So statistically you are the least free country. Your government throws more people per capita to jail than the government of El Salvador. But they keep on telling you how "free" you are. Funny. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_incarceration_rate

So interesting! I live in Hawaii and I work in the wedding industry. Our average wedding (with about 200 guests, which is an average "large" wedding here) is at least $50,000. We've had many couples say their budget was $75,000! (¥8,000,000) Our average client is a middle to high class couple in their mid-30s, so they've already been working for at least 10 years. Usually they pay for as much as they can and they do get help from parents. Sometimes relatives "gift" part of the wedding, like "gift" them their photographer. Here, the "go-to" rule for guests attending a friend's wedding is to "pay for your own dinner." So if the wedding is a dinner at a fancy buffet, you might give around $100 per head. If you are a relative you would probably give much more, but especially if a friend is younger, they might not even give that amount. In this way, couples usually don't make back the amount that they spend on their wedding, they end up just eating the cost. I think the "$300 per head" rule in Japan is expensive, but that's nice that it helps the wedded couple so much more!!

Congratulations, Maiko & Paolo! We wish you a marriage full of love and laughter. After dating 13 years, my wife and I got married in 2017. We’re an older couple, we live Los Angeles, she’s Chinese and I’m Filipino. It is common here for the couple to provide guests a wedding registry (specific stores), but we told our guests we don’t want any gifts. Of our 80 guests, most were relatives and only our closest friends were invited - to our surprise, everyone gave us cash gifts ($100 per person, some significantly more). We paid for the entire wedding ourselves, but if we were in our 20s, I think we would have accepted help from our parents on both sides. We love seeing your videos, which helped us plan our 2016 and 2018 trips to Japan. If you have a wedding ceremony and it’s early October, please invite us, we’ll be there! CONGRATS, again!

Congrats Paolo and Maiko! For Singaporean Malay traditional weddings, invited guests are to give money but there is no hard and fast rule.. The amount is to be a sincere wedding gift and minimally about Y$1000 only.. So typically, the bride and groom fork out most of the money and depending on how big you want your event to be..

Traditionally in the states, the bride’s family paid for the wedding and the husbands family paid for the rehearsal dinner...I think the husband’s family also paid for the honeymoon.
