Man, lemme tell you, wildcard characters are ESPECIALLY important for crossover games. I wouldn't be nearly as much of a nerd for Nintendo and Weekly Shonen Jump if SSBB and Jump Ultimate Stars didn't have rosters with characters that made me go "who?" and got me browsing wikis for hours on end. On that note, Jump Force's roster is awful in the same way MVCI's is. Aside from the massive presence of painfully obvious choices there's only really Dai, whose source manga is getting a brand new anime adaptation AND a video game, and Ryo, whose manga is one of WSJ top sellers (by like, a lot). Not to mention the fact that the only character that isn't from a full-on battle manga is Yugi, because gag, romcom and sports aren't real genres, I guess (not even Gintama? Come on).

I do have to disagree on the point of "sometimes letting someone sit out a game." Bringing back popular characters, even if they're in alot of installments, isnt really a huge problem, but I do agree you need to have some healthy variety of new characters to balance them out, and taking out some of the "stale" ones can help, its just difficult to say if its worth it. I dont think players are gonna "lose interest" just cause the same character keeps coming back; you just want to make sure you can bring back a variety of different characters so you can cover your bases. You never know who you might end up disappointing if you decide "eh, this character's been in too many games, lets give em a break" cause they've probably built up alot of people. I'm not really used to my characters being "Staples" but it is super nice that KOF15 has literally 6 characters revealed and I can already point out 3 I have alot of fun with (Shun'ei, K', and Leona). Usually, Im more towards Marrow, Sonson (she was new to MvC2 but was the daughter of another Capcom character btw), X-23, and similar characters of that caliber who didnt click with alot of other people. I do agree with the rest of the video though. You want to throw in wild-cards and not just add in whos expected. Its why I dont think DBFZ or Jump Force have good DLC's (I know Jump Force is a joke but I can still point at the roster and point out problems.) They have a similar problem to MvC:i where theres some executive saying "We need THESE characters cause THEY'RE Popular." Jump Force has no DLC characters that arent from an existing franchise in the base roster, and all of the shows getting characters are *HUGE* so theres a good chance you've covered those fanbases just fine. Medaka from Medaka box? Nah, we need that chick from Hunter x Hunter who can become super buff. Having popular characters isnt a problem, but only appealing to the people who you probably already have interested in the game really nets you nothing. Personally, I like picking characters that I know absolutely nothing about, and picking characters from more franchises often brings alot more variety to the roster than picking characters from the same ones over and over. Going to MvC:I, I dont think Winter Soldier or Black Widow appealed to ANYONE new. We had plenty of MCU representation, we had plenty of Military-personnel characters in the roster, and we even had non-super-powered-trickster-type-female character and Military-guy-with-metal-arm-who-throws-grenades. If you played MvC:I for gameplay, then you certainly had someone already if you're in that deep, and if you liked how they looked, you already had people who appealed to you. Veeeeery few people are gonna say "Wow, Winter Soldier. I'm getting this game just for him." Alot of what im saying applies mostly to fighting games from existing franchises picking out characters, but in games like that, I like looking at the roster and going "I dont know who that is. I want to try them out." This is why I dislike Jump Force and MvC:i's roster decisions cause its clearly just "the chart says they're marketable." DBFZ has a ton of Goku's, two characters from a movie that was barely out before their announcement, and even Jiren isnt really that popular but he's the villain of that arc of super so he's more marketable. Dengeki Bunko is another example where everyone is either one of the companies most popular characters (even if they dont know how to fight like Taiga or Kirino), or characters from shows airing at that time (like Strike the Blood or Heavy Object). It would've been cool to see some light novel characters be playable instead of assist only. Also I dont think you knew Dragon Ball Z very well if you think some of those characters are "Wild cards." Bardock, Broly (DBZ), and Videl is way more popular and expected than Chi-chi or Raditz, believe it or not. Characters like Nappa are more like Wild cards rather than anything.

Great job on this video man! I agree with a lot of what you said and even learned a lot of stuff about these series. It was very insightful. And I agree with what you said about Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance and Deception. The way they switched out so many classic characters and added so many new ones, for better or for worse, ended up bringing so much depth and diversity to those rosters and to the series as a whole. Even if most new characters were crappy, all of the cool new ones were worth it and I hope to see characters like Li Mei again soon in another Mortal Kombat game. And while I do agree with a lot of what you said about MKX and the character designs, I gotta say one thing I do disagree with you on is the Kombat Kids. I personally loved them and thought that they were a great and unique addition to the roster and really felt like they were bringing about the next generation of Mortal Kombat and trying something new. I really wish all 4 of them made the MK11 main roster so they could flesh them out a bit more and have them all interact with the younger versions of their parents/ family, but oh well. At least we have Cassie and Jacqui still.

Little question concerning you "guest characters" point. I understand why it's frustrating that half of the MK-X's DLCs were guests considering it's the 10th installment and many characters are left to be forgotten, or worse, mistreated. But what if that was the first game of the serie? Would you still dislike that many guest characters or would you be fine with it considering the franchise doesn't have any other characters to add?

Honestly, Dragon Ball FighterZ’s roster barely has any surprising picks. Almost all the characters are fan favorites and were to be expected. Bardock and Broly were definitely not wildcards lol. Ginyu I’d say is a bit of a surprise though, he’s the kind of character with a rather unorthodox design, but they’ve certainly delivered.

Another point you could have made for MVCI is the relative lack of female characters. Where are Juri, Menat, Iris, Athena Cykes, and even mainstay Felicia? Heck, you could have even gone the echo fighter route with someone like Alia or Lilith. No comment on more girls for the Marvel side, though.

There will always be a fighting game roster that balances both legacy characters, and some new ‘n original characters, while also mixing in with some guest characters to make things a little spicy!

Great video, but speaking of rosters, you should have talked more about Ultimate's. It's just undeniable that with that many fighters, is still a pretty balaced game and therefore has done something that non other fighting game has made jet.
