Here is how I breakdown a marathon.
Mind over matter.
Of course you have to physically put in the training, but if you get the mind part right, that's when you'll see those epic results.
Manchester marathon race footage.
00:00 - Intro
01:05 - Marathon energy conservation and concentration
03:08 - Race strategy conserve energy for the second half
04:09 - Split times for 10K and goal marathon
05:21 - Second half of the marathon
07:12 - Epic three-pointer
07:53 - 30k Split
09:02 - Pace slowing down
10:10 - 35-40k
11:17 - Morale down
12:50 - Mental toughness
12:55 - The finishing line

Hey Nick, I just wanted to let you know that regardless if you achieve your goals or not, every race I watch of yours is a huge inspiration. Watching someone go all out chasing a goal motivates me to make bigger goals. Last year I ran a marathon after one year of running. I was 290 lbs and it was a hellish experience. Throughout the year I continued to get heavier despite the running until November when I decided it was time to take my goals more seriously. At that point I had gotten back up to 307 lbs and have lost 57 of those pounds in the last 5 months and am still on track to lose more. I am able to comfortably run about 90 seconds per km faster at a lower heart rate. Thank you for being an inspiration to keep on pushing.

Nick, you can definitely run under 2:20. Your comment about not being fresh rings true. Every marathon you run depletes you, even those you run slower pacing others. Be judicious about how many you run in a year. Your kids are only young once. Hire out work that can be done by others to spend as much time with your family as possible. You can hire out editing, merch shipping, etc. Looking forward to seeing you run well under 2:20 at Berlin!

Started watching your content and following your strava recently! Im a keen runner and love getting into the mountain trails! You inspired me to see what times i could get on a track as ive never run on a flat track always opting for the hills! I wanted to sub 20 a 5k and blew it to smithereens with a 16:21! Thanks for your inspiration and time you'll smash that 2:20 barrier in due course my dude!! 💪

Love the advice and the thought patterns through your mind, helps massively so thank you. Although I done 34k in my longest workout in prep for this marathon I don't think it was long enough. My mind was good but my body was giving up, the demons came in and at km 31 I done a walk run kind of thing until the end. I never experienced the kind of pain I felt in those last 11km's of the marathon in my training so maybe I didn't do enough but learnt so much to take forward. Thanks for the video nick, all the best for Berlin 🏃🏼

Absolutely love these breakdowns! Nick you are my biggest inspiration on KZfaq! You helped me break 20 mins 5k now I am sure I will break 3h marathon one day too. In this race I feel like losing the group at the begging of 2nd half might have been a big factor I feel like running alone for so long its very very hard going for any kind of PB :D

my experience is don‘t make too many plans beforehand about pacing or splits or the route. Just do it! It most likely will be very different. For my last marathon I had planned everything just to ensure myself I‘ll manage to run sub 3h. I prepared splits for every single mile and at mile 16 I ripped the skin off my second toe and for the rest of the race I fought against the pain. I finished in 2‘50… without splits 😊 Clear your head and just do it! Keep an eye on your avg pace and enjoy the race 🥳

Really enjoyed this breakdown. I find the hardest part is between 25-36km. Once i get to 37km, if i feel ok then it's on! It always seems to fall apart at about 36km!

Another brilliant video Nick! I wish I had seen it before running London this year as it would have given me the mindset to stick to my pace in the last 10 kms. Good luck with Berlin! You will smash sub 2:20!

Bro. I ran my first marathon last weekend in Stockholm. I thought I was in sub-4 shape, but then it was 28C on race day and the time goal went out of the window! I finished in 4:43 and it was incredibly tough; I was struggling from around 10K and had to take walk breaks in the first half! One thing that helped me get through the second half was your chunking strategy. Instead of fixating on “oh no I have 18km left”, it was “only 4km then you’ve finished this section”. It made a huge difference and made the second half much more manageable. I ended up running my second fastest 5K between 36-40K 😂

Cracking run from you Nick. I can't wait to see how you get on in Berlin. Can I ask you do you think Manchester is a better course than London if I'm going after a PB next April? I am considering doing Manchester instead of London this time. I found London very congested this year but I don't know if the course in Manchester is harder with elevation and things.

30k runners and you ended up running the majority on your own! Why do you think this was? Do you think you need the competition and camaraderie of fellow runners around you to stay mentally in the game? Great running, love the breakdown.

Hi Nick, incredible!! Can I ask you, What do you usually eat on race morning? I find it incredibly hard to run medium/longer distances with a proper breakfast in my stomach. My stomach hurts a lot in the end, so I started just eating a little bit of yoghurt on the morning. Is that enough for Marathon distance?
@justalilbester
@justalilbester 2 ай бұрын
Pleasure mate. You need to train your gut for this as you need the fuel for these races. I personally have peanut butter on bagels 😋 2 of them (and a bar with 1 hour to go if I’m still hungry).
@christianfleischer2838

Okay Thanks!! What is the most important to get into your body on race morning? Like Macro wise. I believe like juice and yoghurt for the sugar and energy through that. But i might have to get used to more food:)
