What a nice man that was very informative. Thank you for taking time out of your day to help all of us we really appreciate this for sure.... :) I will be getting the regular size implants with 6 on top and two on the bottom here in Washington state. I will be having my remaining teeth removed at the same time. I will then have to heal for the next 4 months with the implants buried in my gums while wearing temporary dentures. I will then replace my temporary dentures with the new implant arches overdentures. I am having ten teeth removed as I have been wearing partial dentures for about 3 years. I am 55 years old and will be having all of this done starting in about 10 days. I am nervous and feeling old but understand it truly is for the best. I have endured a lot of Dental pain over the last 37 years and its ok. Also my dentist said I could change up into FIXED dentures pretty easy using the same implants and changing out the abutments so that was pretty cool. Cannot afford those right now for many years and very blessed from Father God to be getting snap on overdentures forsure...:) Do you with all your experience feel that when a person lets the implants heal for many months that they are less likely to fail? also some people say you have to take snap on dentures out every night and others say they never take them out and are doing fine. What is your thoughts on this as well? Thank you! :)

Hi, upper implants usually need about 4 months to heal and lower implants need about 3 months to heal. For overdentures, I usually let them heal while buried below the gums. Snap in dentures are designed to be removed for cleaning them and the implant posts. They are not designed to be left in the mouth all the time. I recommend that patients remove the snap in dentures at night and soak them in denture cleaning solution. That way your mouth has a chance to rest over night and it decreases the chances of getting a fungal infection in your mouth. Thank you very much for watching!

Hi, the snaps come in different strengths and they can be changed out to give you the correct amount of retention (strong enough so it doesn't come out when you are eating, but weak enough that you can remove the denture with your fingers). I made a video that talks about the different snaps in more detail. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ppioqsSUr8Cpm40.html

It sounds like you need a reline of your denture. I'm currently working a similar case, I'm making an immediate denture that will be a snap in denture. Once the patient heals after the extractions (in 6 months or so) I'll make a new overdenture with a metal framework as a "final overdenture". Your dentist should have explained the details of the procedure to you.

Thank you for this. I had it done last year and finished in May of last year. So far so good though they gave me black inserts and only 2 blue on the bottom. 4 implants on top and 4 on the bottom. The top are relatively secure though I would like maybe the next step up just for better retention. The bottom do come loose sometimes if i am drinking water or chewing something a bit tough. I am considering asking for medium strength on the bottom. Currently only have 2 blue and 2 black.

@@VeryNiceSmileDental Thanks I will, I was planning on an April or early May appointment since it will be a year since I had the overdentures put in. When I had them fitting (had them done at Rutgers dental school) He put I think green o-rings on the top but then we both could not get them out. He had to bang them out with the dental version of a slide hammer. So thats why I get nervous about changing this o-rings.
@VeryNiceSmileDental
@VeryNiceSmileDental Жыл бұрын
Depending on if they are the same brand that I use, green is medium strength. I like to change the snaps one at a time to make sure they aren't too tight. Also make sure you can remove the overdenture while you're still there in case you can't remove it. I had a patient once on whom I placed stronger snaps. I was able to remove the overdenture but when the patient got home they couldn't. I had to place weaker snaps the next day.

I have bottom snap in dentures since 2008 and I am very glad I had the work done. They usually snap in place and I had no problems at all. I go to the dentist every six months for a cleaning and they sometimes change the rings in the part on the denture. Lately the denture pops out when I am eating something dry and food gets stuck at the end of the denture and under the denture. This is unusual. Do you think my bottom jaw has changed and I need a new fitting and denture? I was also wondering can you change the snap in dentures be changed to the screw in type?
@VeryNiceSmileDental
@VeryNiceSmileDental 2 жыл бұрын
If the snaps are new but your snap in denture keeps coming loose, it may need a reline. Talk to your dentist about why it pops loose. As to changing over to the screw in type, it depends on how many implants you have and where they are placed in your jaw. Sometimes it can be done easily, sometimes it takes a lot of work. Thank you very much for watching.

Hi, if your snap in denture is coming loose even with the strongest snaps and food is getting underneath your denture, you may need to get it relined. Also have your dentist check the posts that the snaps "snap" onto to see if they are worn. Worn posts won't hold the snap tightly and need to be replaced. Thank you very much for watching!

Hi Dr Rich, I have a question and hopefully you can answer this pretty quick? :) When a person gets a full extraction for like remaining teeth and has a few bone grafts and has implants placed upper and lower... When do they start softly brushing gums after surgery and they have disolvable stitches they are dealing with. I know I will be using dentures at this time but how can I brush? When does a person start softly brushing gums? I would think they would need to just be rinsing with salt water and medical rinse for days? I dont know how all this works with gums all sore and full of stitches and trying to place flipper dentures in and out and dont want to get infections?
@VeryNiceSmileDental
@VeryNiceSmileDental 2 жыл бұрын
Hi. Don't brush your gums until they are healed up. The dissolvable stiches usually fall out in a week or two, depending on what material was used. Wait a few weeks unless your dentist tells you otherwise. Don't put a lot of pressure on the areas where you had bone grafts placed. Thank you very much for watching.

Thank you Dr Rich, That is what I thought. I have been taking my antibiotics, rinsing with salt water 4 to 5 times a day and two rinses with antibiotic mouth wash. I am not doing any swishing and am eating very soft foods. I kept my temporary dentures out after day one as they told me to keep in but yesterday, I just kept them out and was very gentle on myself giving air to heal. I use my tongue to push the food down my throte and use the top of my mouth away from implants to eat. Today I have my dentures in and am going to start wearing them a lot. I have an excellent Dentist and and Excellent Oral surgeon who is also a full- blown doctor. I just forgot to ask or don't remember asking about when to brush and its the weekend. I do have instructions, but they are more for a person getting one or two implants. I have had 10 teeth removed and 6 implants placed. I am very sore but i am also very thankful to God. My teeth were pretty much over and there was nothing I could do except be in more pain and spend thousands only to lose them anyway. So now it's about wearing these dentures until I can get my over dentures in 4 to 6 months and learning with not being embarrassed. I cannot not eat with these dentures in my mouth because they hurt, and the bottom just slides all over. I cannot use any adhesive because I have to wait a long time for that. I believe its several weeks but will ask my Doctors. This is a pretty intense thing to go thru and having to work and provide for my family makes it even harder. I thank you for helping me DR Rich that sets my mind at ease.... Thank you

I had a lower permanent implant with overdenture over 20 years ago. Do you know roughly the cost of replacing just that lower overdenture? The implants are good and the overdenture has a metal frame. Would it be less expensive to have the new one built over the original metal? If so how long does that take to make? In other words how long would I have to hide in my house without teeth? Thank you!
@VeryNiceSmileDental
@VeryNiceSmileDental 5 ай бұрын
Hi, costs will vary from office to office. I made a video about overdenture costs that you might find interesting, kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jtSTepty1eDHfZ8.html Do you still have your lower overdenture? You may be able to keep using it while a new overdenture is being made. If it's 20 years old, I'd recommend a new overdenture rather than an overhaul of your existing overdenture. Also, the posts on your implants may need to be replaced due to wear and tear. Do you know what type of snaps you have? I've had a couple of patients over the years who had snaps by companies that no longer exist and replacement parts weren't available.

I had four implants in the top. The right side were placed incorrectly, one was in the front left other further back and crooked. The front, as it was the only one snapped out eating grilled cheese. The other was constantly infected and had to be drilled out. This all caused divets and bone loss which i was trying to prevent. The two on the right are almost on top of each other and all i have left. The dentist just put healing cap back on and my tissue has not grown over. Now when i eat my denture constand slided arount on the metal. I am afraid to use them to snap in as there are none on other side. Im afraid when i eat since it would only be anchored on the one side it would cause issues and or cause them to fail because there isnt anything on the other side to prevent movement. I am heart broken and this is causing further bone loss because they move so much even after relign. I lost my teeth due to health issues. This has caused physical and mental/emotional issues. I used to be beautiful, (not trying to brag) but i am loosing more and more bone and all this has literally drained my funds. Is there any specialist out there that ever takes on a probono case. I have trouble eating and chewing, the movement causes pain and more bone loss. Emotionally i am just drained.

Hi, definitely go back for some adjustments and tell your dentist your concerns with the metal and the look of the teeth. Sometimes the metal framework is made in such a way that it is at the surface of the overdenture rather than embedded into the acrylic. Make sure you are inserting the denture properly. Sometimes that can wear the snaps prematurely. Let me know how it goes.

Hi, usually all on 4 teeth need more room than a snap in denture. What that means is if you have a snap in denture, there may not be enough space to convert to an all on 4. If that's the case, the implants would need to be removed, the bone cut down, and new implants placed for an all on 4.

I have had my snap in since august and haven’t worn it for more than a few min at a time because it hurts ALOT! I’ve gone in multiple times to have it adjusted and nothing seems to help. Once in it feels like there is a tight pinch on one of the implants, and like something is rubbing my gums on both sides. Also noticed some of the metal looks exposed. Could this be the rubbing I feel? What can I do for relief? I really want to wear these but they are just too painful!

Hi Bechay, it depends on how your temporary denture was made. Denture teeth come in different styles, from anatomic (looks like a real tooth on the biting surface) to flat plane (the biting surface is flat) and some in between. They also come is different qualities. You're dentist may have used flat plane teeth to make it easier to adjust (for both you and your dentist).

I am miserable with my overdenture. I started this process in 2021 thinking I was going to have permanent teeth via dental implants. 2/4 implants failed even with bone graphs. I was fitted with a temporary traditional denture. My dentist told me since there was nowhere to place another implant, I'd have to go with an overdenture which I was fitted with today. He was able to snap it in and remove it. I couldn't do it myself and he said I'd have to practice taking it out and putting it back in at home. Hès ordering a tool that he said would make it easier to take them out. I tried eating a sub sandwich and it was very uncomfortable. I could feel them slip up and down and cannot get them to snap in place securely. The bite is not right. Finally, after trying to eat something soft, I finally was able to pry the over denture out and replaced it with my temporary denture so I could eat. I can't imagine having to live like this the rest of my life. I should have never believed those stupid TV commercials about dental implants.

Hi, sometimes the roof of the mouth needs to be covered to give the snap in denture more support. If the person can get 4 implants in the upper jaw, usually I can make a snap in denture that doesn't cover the roof of the mouth and it will stay in place well. If the person can only get 2 implants in the upper jaw, I'll recommend covering the roof of the mouth. This will help secure the snap in denture better.
