What happened at my private guitar lesson? Two Wrong Questions!

This was exactly what happened when I was teaching my private lesson student. When my student asked me two wrong questions then I explained the details behind real meaning of these important guitar techniques. I respect all my students questions & thoughts, however I just don't want them to miss out from these important choices. I never pushed my opinions to my students. Your technique is impeccable 👌 Being disabled and deciding to learn guitar and not being able to practise for longer than half taught me that I have to learn to enjoy the journey of learning and to not want to be advanced to anywhere other than where I am so that I take the time to learn and remember. I really appreciate people like yourself that put so much into learning how to teach all of us weird and wacky different personalities in this world. Much respect.

Tomo San, when we first start learning, you say, "Wax on and Wax off." We say, "Wax off and Wax on." Let them fail by using the wrong techniques. They will come around. You are the master and if they do not want to advance using the proper techniques, then they need to move on. I hope they were watching so that they understand. I can only hope that I will better understand music theory in the future and claim a spot in your learning group. Play on Tomo San!

Thank you for sharing! I didn't notice that part! Fretboard Theory & Ear Training mix = very good! Diagrams & a lot words.. not so great! It can satisfy your feeling but guitar playing part will not change. Thank you!

Thank you for sharing all of your wisdom with the world. You really are a godsend to us struggling guitarists. I've played guitar since I was 11 years old in the late seventies and I learned to play by ear using books and learning from friends who were knowledgeable guitarists. I even studied classical guitar for a little while but I've always struggled with reading music and grasping a proper understanding of the fretboard. It turns out that I have dyscalculia (it's like dyslexia but with numbers) so I've tried to take it slow as I continue to learn the fretboard. I just signed up for your guitar wisdom and I'm getting a lot from it already as I love the fact that I can rewind as much as I'd like and take my time when I need to. You really have a wonderful way of explaining things that I can easily wrap my brain around with proper understanding and I thank you for this. I've been a subscriber of yours for a long time but since I'm currently not working due to health problems with lupus I've decided to dedicate my extra time when I'm not sleeping to continuing my music education from home so I can get a proper understanding of the fretboard and continue with a better understanding of sight ready and music theory. That’s right Tomo some of the best guitar teachers I have ever seen take time to show the little things that are important because muting is just as important as playing a note so you are spot on showing a more accurate way to do it to get the best results

Thanks for your wisdom as always Tomo...this was a great lesson not only for guitar playing, but also for how to teach and learn. You can encourage, support and show students, but their success is always built on learning the basics and gaining confidence over time. These things can't be rushed. One step at a time. Great work!

That was a great lesson Tomo thanks for sharing, I was playing along with you through a part of what you were teaching and found that your up strokes and string muting techniques quite challenging, "for me anyway" so one way for me to get around some of these issues is by turning the player speed down a notch. This is on the right hand corner below the picture frame with the gear icon should anyone ask or want to know. Thanks again.

"Don't expect too fast" "Keep it simple... for a while" "Just 10 mins a day..." He means months. Not days, not weeks, months. You just have to keep doing it. Everyday. Slowly but surely you will improve. "Be kind to yourself" It IS hard. It only looks easy because you are watching experts. But it's not! It is HARD. And that's okay. You don't need to give yourself any more pressure. "Don't compare" You are learning at your pace. Keep the pace and you will keep learning Enjoy your process. Otherwise you'll never get there

But we live in a world where everything is expected to be quick and fast. We want shortcuts. Look at all the guitar tuition videos on youtube. Most tout easy and fast methods.

Tomo sorry to ask but i think you are the BEST of the best so your advice would be appreciated I am really struggling with grip i hold the chord shapes too firmly which is making play style slow and gives me fatigue after a short while especially if i try to play Bar chords i tried to apply less pressure playing and made some progress but i still even bend some chords out of tone im self tought and feel like no more progress is being made thanks for taking the time to read or reply Tomo keep up the great work your a great teacher !

In the Early days, Phantom of the Opera opening Taught me a lot about Left had muting and Bar chord construction. Foundations are mandatory for Great Improve. Greetings Master Tomo. Be Well... Maj and Min 2-3-4 triads are today's method for me.

There are many teachers out there (private, in shops, online, etc.) that teach current hits or fast picking techniques. That doesn't mean they are good teachers of more advanced techniques or theory. You are obviously a very good teacher of theory and technique, and you have the ability to pass it on to students. I'm not surprised students come to you not knowing the importance of trusting YOU AS TEACHER to teach them what they MUST know and achieve to be better guitarists/musicians.

Thank you for sharing! Some teachers needs to keep students... so they tend to do that. I am very fortunate that I can teach what I feel very important to individual students. My job is to make each student to be a better player so I teach them how teach themselves better with FOUNDATION. No licks, not about styles... before that. Thank you so much!

You must be touching those strings with your muting fingers *so lightly* because just by pressing the 5th string with your index finger, it rings out when you strum all 6 strings! That is beyond amazing to me! How do you have such precise control of your fingers like that?!

Hello Tomo, nice video, I'm just trying to understand R 3 7 chords, ok with E and the B but in between you have another shape with Bass B, is this still the E with B Bass (5th) or something else?? Please let me know the or reference corse code where I can find that in detail.. appreciated. Maurizio

I have a question, not about funk, but about scales. The closest I get to funk is the song Mercy Mercy. The question is, when playing a minor 145 progression is the 1 considered to be a minor 6 in relation to the full major scale. If not, then can you play the minor 145 as a 2 or a 3 or even a 7?

Thank you for sharing! You can simply to think 'minor key" Good song writing has minor mood & Major mood in one key. Relative Major, relative minor. Typical one... A little bit of Key of G as Major, then go to a little bit of Em for minor feel.

@@TomoFujitaMusic Thanks Tomo. Then it's relative minor or 6th aiolian for minor mood. People use that 6th as a 1 in a 12 bar like the song Thrill. So it's not numbers, it's mood and feel sort of like the walkdown in the song Good Vibrations. Or Good by to Love by the Carpenters. Elvis used a lot of C to Am stuff. I get it though, it all depends on the major or minor mood for the song.
