As someone who has always been slapdash about wearing my seat belt, I think i will be wearing my seatbelt from now on. I imagine most the injuries occured in people who were not strapped down and hit the roof of the plane.

My friend flew me to Switzerland from the uk for my birthday. On the way back we had crosswind turbulence. The plane was dropping and it felt like the “swoosh” of a roller coaster. I was absolutely terrified. I counted the 02 building 32 times until it was safe to land, nightmare.

I never understand why people like to do that. I get that a person or 2 might need to carry on a huge one but apparently it's a lot of people these days. I was flying on the same route as the Singapore airlines flight 2 weeks ago and there was a guy who not only filled his overhead compartment but had stuff in a few others over the aisle seats! And to make it worse he kept opening them again and again and again throughout the flight and was walking around and doing stuff all the while and won't remain seated. He had so many stuff in so many places that he had to open like 10 compartments when he wasn't sure where to get something. Granted he was with his wife and they had a small baby, but those folks were completely reckless and inundated the cabin crew with endless requests. I personally try to fly as lightly as possible. That day I only had my laptop bag with me and had no problem keeping it under my seat because that guy filled the airplane with his stuff. Luckily the seat next to me was empty so it wasn't too bad.

As long as it’s under 7 kg, it should be okay in MOST cases. Why most airlines weigh your carry on luggage these days. Some people can’t afford the extra luggage fees and also airlines lose your luggage way too often.

One decade ago, I was on a flight to La Reunion island, and we got in what I thought was called an "air pocket". The aircraft quickly lost altitude, dropping rapidly until it recovered, which felt like having hit a hard stop. Fortunately, no service was being carried out by the flight attendants, however some of the passengers were injured; mainly those who were not sitting strapped to their seats. The pilot came on the PA to apologize and said this was not detected on his radar, hence why we got no warning. I have been flying since the early 80's, and this has so far been the only time I experienced such a drastic event. Even if the wings are supposedly capable of handling the stress, it really feels terrible for the few seconds you don't understand what is happening... This is something I am not looking forward to going through again!!! It is incredibly scary, especially because the initial feeling is that you are going down!

Could somebody on here please explain how serious heat can cause thunderstorms which in turn can cause serious turbulence.. Turbulence is a term used as I understand it where you have large differences in air pressure going from very high to very low in a matter of a few seconds. The pressure can be so low that it's like flying in a vacuum with no air to support the flight so it literally falls until it hits more air at a higher pressure. Without air obviously there is no up thrust to support the aircrafts weight and it just falls literally..

I’ve been on two United airlines flights when something simple but not as serious happened. And both times it’s was a year apart leaving the same airport - Auckland. Heading to LAX. The plane got turbulence and went up and down and shook so much I thought that surely the wings would rip off. And on one flight the plane just dropped and everyone screamed. But then flew out of it and continued on our way so the pilots must not have thought it too bad. One thing though was we did get a few minutes warning and they had to stop serving meals and the crew sit down. And I have flown frequently since but those two flights had me scared.

I read elsewhere that the aircraft pitched up and was shaking and then dropped suddenly. Sorry, but that sounds remarkably like a stall to me. You'd think turbulence would have to be at an insane level to cause a plane to stall. Must not have been much above that speed, and very high altitude, and a humongous sudden tailwind, perhaps? Unfortunate way to die, for sure. Be interested to hear if they can deduce (& publish) what happened

Well there’s some weird weather and wind effects out those parts, most like due to some combination of mountains and tropical air currents mixing with non tropical or localised hot and cold streams. Maybe 6/7 years ago we performed south east asias largest aircraft field repair in Loei Thailand, swapping out the entire tail section for a Q400 that upon landing dropped 25ft out the air onto its tail due wind shear and bent the whole empennage

Aside from the guy who had a heart attack, this is why airplanes have seatbelts. And you couldn’t argue against it because you’re shown how to use them at the beginning of the flight and there is even a light to tell you when you must wear your seatbelt. The pilots obviously would’ve had the lights on because they would’ve been very aware of the the weather. So like I said nobody should’ve actually been injured (aside from the heart attack).

@@Astrophobia88 If he went flying out his seat and got an injury it would put strain on your heart. I’m not saying it’s the cause, and I’m not victim blaming because a lot of people don’t have it on when they don’t have to and it’s not in the rules that you need it on either. These events are common enough however, and I don’t even notice when I’m strapped in or not. I never used to wear it until I saw someone say they always wear theirs and it made complete sense so I did it ever since.

Seeing this is a complete freak horror story and has became a notorious flight incident as a trend, ever since MH370, but this is no missing incident. While part of aviation history in Southeast Asia, this has to be one of the most notorious incidents, in which people are breaching o er a simple need in hiearchy, a lessonnthat must be learned in future times likethese. It shows clearly it is a risk profession and the government should pay us (cabin crew) money for that reason. That's a thing at the moment that doesn't compensate. Like in Italy the government pays €50 its day of work! After that experience no one will fly for sure.

Singapore airlines, while itself being expensive, has a budget division called "Scoot". Scoot is the cheapest most basic flight to Asia you can buy. You know it's cheap because they don't supply free water and if you use the seat in front to support yourself it will feel like it is collapsing. The plastic being so ridiculously thin and flimsy. Also, for some reason, flying with Singapore airline's Scoot was the most uncomfortable flight I have experienced. Even painful. Personally, even though I am a budget traveler and regularly fly to and from Asia, I avoid them like I would avoid dog excrement. Believe me, I prefer budget over quality but not this low level scrimping. On an 11 hour pressurised flight you expect to be comfortable and kept alive with water. You get none of this with Singapore airlines's Scoot.

thats a budget airline. Singapore airlines is not budget and is generally one of the best airlines in the world. i always fly with hem when possible, and i am normally flying the london to singapore route.

@@CraigCameron-uq2wc I tried it once because it stops in Thailand before going to Singapore. Normaly I use Thai Airways. I will never use this company again nor will I use Singapore airlines again. To me, they are not so good. Etihad is much much superior for a decent quality economy flight. Singapore airlines fails. Thai Airways is the champion. Thailand wins.

SIA is literally the number 1 ranked airlines in the world in 2023. Thai airways isn't even close at 40. SIA has not had a single death on board since 2000, this being only the second ever. The bay of bengal is known for extreme turbulence, this is not the first time this has happened and can happen to any plane. Scoot, while being a subsidiary operates almost independently and should be treated as a seperate airline. Bringing up a budget airline (which is honestly still better than many non-budget western options) or the quality of an airline in this case is pointless. Perhaps the only negative point is that SIA do not order planes with an area to store a body, because deaths are extremely rare for them.

The Singapore 777 pilots should be called out and investigated for their negligence resulting in the death of one person and major injuries to many - what happened to seat belt warnings? if this was due to turbulence, which I do not agree for one minute, then there would have been evidence on the weather radars etc and the route changed to avoid it and make all passengers sit and belt up but as always this will be covered up with massive corruption by the authorities and airlines
